Summary
The dissertation is devoted to the bassoon in an instrumental duo. The genre has
been inseparably connected with the bassoon for over four hundred years. It has
contributed directly to the development of the instrument s construction and it has
influenced significantly bassoon expression. The duo literature, which nowadays is
not very popular, became a basis for the insight into the bassoon s origins and its use
as a solo instrument as well as for the research concerning the changes it underwent
throughout particular periods of music history and diverse ways of defining the
correctness of its tone quality as well as dynamic, articulation and expressive
capabilities that were the result of the changes. Unique significance of the duo made
it possible to trace the evolution of the instrument, enabling the integration of
Baroque and contemporary bassoon. The work consists of four chapters; the first
discusses historical circumstances of the bassoon s origins as well as the develop¬
ment of chamber music since the beginning of the 16th century. It raises the issues of
the improvement of pitch, attempts of its equal temperation and intonation problems
characteristic for particular instruments, which are closely connected with the deve¬
lopment of functional harmony, and

of chamber music. It descri¬
bes various tonal systems that simultaneously functioned during the Baroque period
and also it presents the role of music and situation of instrumentalists in an old-time
city on the basis of existing documents concerning old-time
Kraków.
Chapter two is an outline of music literature devoted to the bassoon. The division
into genres proves the comprehensive use of the instrument in symphonic, solo and
above all chamber music.
Chapter three presents the history of bassoon duo. The subchapters provided by
the author contain the analysis of chosen works, which takes into consideration the
periods of increased interest in the genre. The construction of chapter four is a result of
combining elements of music characteristic for bassoon playing and means of expression
typical for a duo with the author s subjective way of interpreting the genre. Issues
connected with performance practice are discussed here in the context of technical
qualities of the bassoon. The duos presented in the recording and described in the
dissertation constitute a compendium of composition techniques that might be
of interest not only for instrumentalists but for composers and theoreticians as well.

.c contains also some reflections on the connections between music and
painting. They prove, according to the author, that Venice of the Renaissance period sho-

uld be considered the city where bassoon as solo instrument came into being. The proof,
supported by early Baroque bassoon literature, is a turning point in the research devo¬
ted to establishing where and when the bassoon became a solo-chamber instrument.
The theses included in the opening and conclusion carry sociological message.
They point to the necessity of changes in the way bassoon playing should be taught;
the author suggests changes in the repertoire that take into consideration contemporary
approaches to the instrument.
