Le fantastique, dans l histoire littéraire, appartient au
xix1
siècle; tout au plus accorde-t-on à Cazotte d en être
un habile précurseur... Et pourtant,
ľétrangeté
du Diable
amoureux est bien de son siècle, elle en dit les inquiétudes
et les hésitations de la pensée. Dès lors son analyse ouvre
nombre de pistes à la rencontre des écrivains
«
à imagination
»
du siècle des Lumières,
Bordeion, Mouhy,
Prévost, Lubert ou
encore Crébillon.
Cet ouvrage choisit de définir le fantastique au
XVIIIe
siècle non
comme un genre en gestation mais comme un registre d écriture
caractérisé par une visée fondamentalement ambiguë envers la
référence comme envers la vérité. Le fantastique innerve les
récits les plus divers
—
contes de fées, contes orientaux, histoires
véritables, romans cabalistiques, fictions scientifiques, parodies
et bien sûr romans
—
et met en évidence les dangereuses
accointances du merveilleux et du vraisemblable dans
ľécriture
de fiction. Retour d une croyance refoulée au travers d un
merveilleux souvent badin, le registre fantastique témoigne des
mutations profondes que connaît la culture du xvnf siècle et
montre, non sans paradoxe, comment l expérience

un certain
désarroi peut devenir source de plaisir littéraire.

enseigne dans un lycée du Val-de-Marne
