Displaced Memories analyzes the repre¬
sentation of traumatic memories
—
political
imprisonment, torture, survival, and exile
—
in the literary works of Alicia Kozameh,
Alicia Partnoy, and Nora Strejilevich, sur¬
vivors of Argentina's "Dirty War"
(1976-
1983).
Beginning with an examination of the
history of Argentina's last dictatorship, the
conditions that led the authors to exile, and
the contexts in which the texts were pub¬
lished,
Portela
provides the theoretical tools
for the understanding of narratives of trauma
and displacement caused by political vio¬
lence. The author proposes a theory that cri¬
tiques post-structuralist paradigms of trau¬
ma, which present trauma as an unclaimed
experience impossible to apprehend, as she
argues for an analysis of the symbolic uses
of language, presenting trauma as a claimed
experience that can be brought into repre¬
sentation and therefore create the conditions
of possibility for working through.
Displaced Memories offers an in-depth
analysis of Alicia Kozameh's
Pasos bajo el
agua, Alicia Partnoy's La Escuelita, and
Nora Strejilevich's Una sola muerte
numerosa.
Portela
contends that
torture,
in¬
carceration, and exile shape these texts with
a fragmentary structure that reflects the very
nature of trauma. While the narrators are
capable of shaping some of the events of the
traumatic past into a narrative memory, the
writing also engages in acting out the ex-

pertences
that are impossible to formulate
into a coherent narrative.
Portela
explains
that writing repression also reveals, how¬
ever, that resistance is not only possible, but
necessary. The three texts constitute "hidden
transcripts" of defiance and counter-spaces
for resistance, dignity, and solidarity. The
act of writing is analyzed as a performance
that allows the continuity of life while in
detention as well as when recalling the
events of imprisonment from exile. Writing
is presented as a means to mourn and work
through the authors' trauma as survivors.
Portela
explores how these works commit to
the past but also to the present and future
—
as the recent publications in Argentina of the
three works demonstrate, there is still an
ongoing process to mourn the disappeared
and a demand for voices that have been
exiled and silenced. These voices recon¬
struct the traumatic past to pay tribute to
those who did not survive, to reconstitute a
body shattered by trauma, and to reclaim a
political project that almost disappeared
because of the repression of the dictatorship
and the impunity ceded by the democratic
regimes. Displaced Memories will be of
interest to scholars and students of memory
and trauma, exile, representations of vio¬
lence, testimonial writing, contemporary
Latin American and Argentine literature,
culture and history, as well as to readers
concerned with the rise of the unpunished
torture in the world.
