Kasper
Wojnar, an amazing Krakow bookseller, publisher and supporter of the independence
movement, was born in the
Borek
village, in what is currently the district of Jedlicze.
I he development ofKasper s writing and reading skills began in the Wojnar family home.
Ka¬
sper
spent ten years studying in a secondary school in Jaslo. In
1891,
Kasper s parents, Ann and
Lukas,
sold their small arable farm in
Borek
and together with Kasper s siblings moved the family
to a village near Chyrow, which is situated several dozen kilometers from
Przemyśl.
In
1893,
despi¬
te the move,
Kasper
went on to receive an excellent grade on his
matura
(an exam taken by Polish
students in preparation for university studies) exam. Now in the
Wolcza Dolna
village, the Wojnar
family bought another arable farm, which was twice the size of their previous one in
Borek.
Alt¬
hough he continued to visit friends and relatives in Jedlicze, especially those interested in the inde¬
pendence movement, the younger generation of Jedlicze was not aware ofKasper s importance.
Before the
matura
exam,
Kasper
had been very involved in the underground independence mo¬
vement, educational and publishing activity. As a student, he led an underground organization White
tagle in the Jaslo district. He broadened the scope of his activity when he decided to continue his
education at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. In
1894,
as a law student, he wrote the book
O Naczelniku Kościuszce,
which he published and distributed from his own publishing house. Shortly
thereafter, his next publication,
Pieśni narodowe,
was printed and distributed, followed by his se¬
cond work,
Historia
Polski,
which was printed in
1895.
This publication coincided with the cente¬
nary anniversary of the loss of Polish independence. In September, while spending a few days in
Borek,
the introduction to this book was written. Then,
Kasper
made the decision
tojóin
the Au¬
strian army. He completed his military service in Lviv, where he was promoted to the rank of artil¬
lery officer.
Following his military service,
Kasper
returned to Krakow, where he continued his printing acti¬
vity. His publications were mainly distributed in the district of Warsaw. In
1895,
he started publica¬
tion of the
Gospodarz
calendar, and soon after, he started regular editions of four different calen¬
dars. In
1898,
while the entire nation was celebrating the centenary anniversary of Adam Mickiewicz s
birthday,
Kasper
published his book, Adam
Mickiewicz, Król Pieśni Polskiej.
Each and every book
that
Kasper
had printed was sold during the unveiling of the monument in Krakow s central Grand
Square.
As an independence activist, he undertook many dangerous missions. In May
1899,
Kasper
was
arrested by Russian police and imprisoned in Warsaw. After a diplomatic intervention, it was
orde-

red that
Kasper
could leave the prison but not before he signed a statement promising that he would
never cross a Russian border, or act to the detriment of the state. After coming back to Krakow, the
Austrian military authorities brought charges against him. As a result of these charges, he was depri¬
ved of the rank of artillery officer. During this time, his situation became unbearable. After bribing
prison guards,
Kasper
was released from prison. Prior to his release, his wife, the former Maria
Sadowski, sold their own printing business.
With the threat of war becoming ever more possible,
Kasper
started his political commentary. In
1913,
he published his book
Wojna bałkańska a sprawa polska.
Because he no longer had his own
printing company, the book was published in Lviv. The author, on the example of Balkan nations,
showed the ways of achieving motherland s independence. In
1914,
when the war started,
Kasper
Wojnar joined the Polish armed forces on 8th of August.
When the Polish Legions were formed,
Kasper
was promoted to the rank of officer. He fought in
the Carpathian Mountains until mid-May
1915,
at which time he was moved to
Piotrków Trybunal¬
ski.
At this time he wrote a book
Wojna światowa a sprawa polska,
which was printed in
1916.
Now
an officer, he continued his military service in Wolyn. Soon after, in
Rembertów, Kasper
was pro¬
moted to the rank of commandant of the Artillery School. He did not hold his position very long due
to his transfer to the Regulations Commission, where they took advantage of Kasper s publishing
experience and his knowledge of foreign languages.
When in
1917
the Polish Legions were moved to Warsaw and deferred to the command of the
Prusy
Army,
Kasper
Wojnar became the member of the Provisional Council of State, but in
1918
when the Polish Army was created, he returned to the Regulations Commission.
His final months of military service were spent in
Bytom,
where as a member of the Vote Com¬
mission, he mainly dealt with publishing cases. As a volunteer, he also took part in the Third Sile-
sian Uprising. The military chapter of Kasper s life came to a close in May
1922
when he retired as
an artillery lieutenant
-
colonel. Then, in
1922,
Kasper
returned to his life as a bookseller and publi¬
sher.
