CONCEPTUALIZATION AND
SYMBOLIZATION OF ETHNIC IDENTITY
AMONG SERBS IN HUNGARY IN THE
LATE XX CENTURY
SUMMARY
In this book, the author presents the results of her
research on the ethnic identity of the Serbian national minority
living in Hungary, in five settlements of different size and type:
in two cities,
Budimpešta/Budapest
and Sentandreja/Szentendre,
and three villages,
Pomaz/Pomáz, Kalaz/Budakalász
and
Čobanac/Csobánka.
The study, based on field research conducted
over the period of two years, from
1995
to
1997,
focuses on how
this ethnic group conceptualizes, symbolizes and maintains its
identity.
Ethnic identity was defined as
processual,
socially and
historically conditioned phenomenon. The author s position is to
view the meaning and functions of ethnic phenomena, as well as
identity symbols and strategies as changeable and adjustable to
the socio-historical context. The political aspects of the problem
are also taken into consideration, such as the attitude of the
Hungarian society and state as well as of Serbia, the ethnic
minority s home state. As the Hungarian society itself at the time
of this research was in transitional phase, the complex effects of
these processes on the national minorities status within its scope
were also investigated.
In the introductory part, the author defines how she
chooses to understand the meanings of core concepts, ethnic

identity and national minority; how she delineates the problem
and what theoretical and methodological positions were taken in
this research. In the second part of the book, she offers a brief
historical survey of the Serbian enclave in Hungary, especially in
Budapest and its environs. The emphasis of the analysis is then
shifted to the contemporary context of the problem, which is the
main interest of the author. After some basic socio-demographic
characteristics of the Serbian minority in Hungary are presented
in comparison to other national minorities on the one hand, and
the Hungarian majority on the other, the author outlines the main
properties of the urban and rural settlements in which she had
conducted her research. Finally, the legal status of national
minorities in Hungary is discussed. The last segment is dedicated
to analyzing how the contemporary Serbian minority institutions
operate.
In the third part the focus is on the problem of ethnic
identity. Based on the statements gathered from the minority
group members, the author first of all talks about the problems of
conceptualizing the ethnic boundary between the group and the
others (Us
:
Them), that is about the ascriptive process and how
the criteria delineating in-group members are chosen. Further, she
goes on to discuss the dual identity issues, that is the phenomenon
of belonging to two different cultural groups, and how it is
addressed within the community, what are the attitudes towards
mixed marriages and how is the distance between in-group and
out-group members perceived and measured. At the end of the
second part of the book she returns to the problem of Serbian
ethnic minority s dual feelings of belonging both to the country
of origin and their domicile homeland. The minority group
members seem to constantly oscillate between the feelings of
double inclusion and double exclusion.
In the following chapter in the third part of the book, the
author directs her attention to the problem of an individual as the
principal bearer of the identity, that is on the processes of
internalizing one s identity through socialization and

enculturalization processes. She also indicates that there are
individual differences towards the ethnic identity and the
relationship between individual and collective (ethnic) identities,
as exemplified by the autobiographical statements of a Serb born
in Budapest in
1915
are presented.
Next chapter in the third part of the book is dedicated to
the analysis of the identity symbols and their conceptualization
processes. First, the core symbols, which distinguish the group
form other groups and majority population in their surroundings,
are determined. Those are the Serbian language and Serbian
Orthodox Religion. Further, extensive data on how fluent in their
language and how frequently the in-group members use it in their
communication, then on the overlapping of religious and ethnic
identities among the Serbian minority in Hungary, as well as their
attitudes towards these issues is presented. Third and fourth part
in the same section are dedicated to the definition of the cultural
content of the ethnic identity symbols, that is to finding an answer
to the questions: What is or What should be the culture of a
national minority? It also discusses the disputes that arise within
but also outside the group as to whether contemporary artistic and
literary achievements should or should not be included into ethnic
minority s cultural inventory, especially into its core symbols.
The Serbian national minority in Hungary had selected cultural
and historical heritage and folk and individual artistic creations to
represent the most distinctive elements which make the
community unique among other groups. In the last, fifth segment,
the problems of historic memory and its functions in building
ethnic identity are briefly addressed.
The last chapter analyses the ritual-celebration-holiday
complex as the time of dense symbolization of ethnic identity.
The most characteristic groups of celebartions are:

Religious holidays as specified by the Serbian Orthodox
calendar,

Commemorations (collective memories) celebrating impor¬
tant historical events or personages, and
3)
Rituals accompanying the openings of Serbian institutions.
As an example of the first group, the celebration of Saint
Sava
is analyzed. The Tercentennial celebration of the Great
Serbian Migration of
1690
was the example of the second, while
the openings of the premises of Serbian Self-Governing Council
in Hungary and Serbian elementary and high schools in Budapest
represent the third group of festivities.
The goal of the research conceived in this particular way
was to achieve thick descriptions, as defined by Clifford Geertz.
Ethno-explications offered by the informants represent one level
of interpretations, while the other is provided by the researcher
who placed the obtained information into the relevant context.
The overall results of the research demonstrate how a small group
of limited social power defines its identity and how it consciously
formulates and implements strategies to maintain it. Although
only the Serbian enclave in Budapest and its surroundings were
investigated, the obtained results pertain to the entire Serbian
community in Hungary. They also represent important findings
that can be used in cross cultural comparisons with other small
ethnic groups that have found themselves in the midst of
transitions in the post-socialist states.
