Using an ethnographic, case-study approach, Kuyvenhoven follows a group of children in grades 4 and 5 and their experiences of storytelling in the classroom over an extended period of time. She documents the positive effects that oral storytelling has on children's vocabulary and writing skills, and on learning across a number of disciplines. In addition, she evaluates storytelling's role in fostering the problem-solving and empathic abilities that are essential to children's intellectual and emotional development.
