Zusammenfassung:In this study, Johanna Kuyvenhoven looks at the use of oral storytelling in the classroom and examines its educational benefits and the ways in which non-print literacy enhances children's overall language and communication capacities. Using an ethnographic, case-study approach, Kuyvenhoven follows a group of children in grades 4 and 5 and their experiences of storytelling in the classroom over an extended period of time. She documents the positive effects that oral storytelling has on children's vocabulary and writing skills, and on learning across a number of disciplines. In addition, she evaluates storytelling's role in fostering the problem-solving and empathic abilities that are essential to children's intellectual and emotional development. Kuyvenhoven observes that as the children share stories out loud they also forge an inclusive learning environment that respects linguistic, social, and ethnic diversity. --From publisher's description.
