Dear students, colleagues, and friends!
The pages of this book chronicle, for the first time,
the
44
years of history of Zagreb s XV Grammar
School. A lot has been lost and forgotten in the meantime,
but what remains should serve as a reminder of the students
who once sat at its desks and dedicated teachers who have
all these years been passing on their knowledge and expe¬
rience.
It all started in Zagreb a long time ago, in
1964,
when XV
Mathematics Grammar School, modelled after similar pres¬
tigious European schools, was founded. Its goal was to pre¬
pare students who wished to pursue a higher education at
faculties which require extended skills in mathematics and
physics.
The admission was secured by passing a comprehensive en¬
trance exam in mathematics. That the best candidates had
been admitted was soon proven by their high rankings in
competitions. Ever since those early days the students of XV
Grammar School have won and continue to win first places
in all the home and international competitions.

In
1972,
XV Grammar School was the first school in Yugo¬
slavia to introduce Computer Science as a school subject.
In
1976,
the students and their teachers moved to a new
building at Jordanovac. The classes were organised in two
shifts, the classrooms had the latest classroom equipment,
and both the students and their teachers could boast even
greater achievements and success than before.
In the difficult Homeland War years neither the students nor
the teachers lost their enthusiasm. In
1991,
Mrs.
Veronika
Javor
and some of the teaching staff introduced the Interna¬
tional Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
The introduction of the IB Middle Years Programme
(Grades
9
and
10)
followed in
1995.
The school has established many international contacts and
continues to support and develop its international connec¬
tions. Among the school s many activities is the students
exchange programme.
For the past eleven years, the students of XV Grammar
School have been participating in ACSL (American Com¬
puter Science League), which brings together students from
about
200
schools in the USA and a few in Canada and Ro¬
mania. Our participants have regularly won first places in
all categories.

The school and some of the teachers have been presented or¬
ders and decorations of the Republic of Croatia for achieve¬
ment.
A great many of almost
15,000
graduates from the school are
well-known experts in their fields, working both in Croatia
and abroad.
Despite being a science-oriented school, XV Grammar
School has produced students of manifold affinities, so that
our graduates are not only to be found amongst mathema¬
ticians, physicists and biologists, but also among opera sing¬
ers, conductors, ballet dancers, sculptors, writers, football
players, etc.
Today
(2008)
the school employs
128
staff members whose
average age is
40.
Amongst our staff,
104
have a university
degree, one holds a Ph.D., eight an M.A. or an M.Sc. de¬
gree, nineteen teachers hold the status of advisor, and elev¬
en of mentor.
Between
1964
and the present the school has had five prin¬
cipals. Since
1993
it has been headed by Mrs.
Veronika
Javor.
The addition of new premises will enable the school to or¬
ganise classes, starting from
2008/2009
school year, in only
one shift, which is one of the chief goals set by the Ministry
of Science, Education and Sport.
