On demand of the publisher the author has abridges
volumunous matter on

text pages and

pages of literature
and notes, trying completely to consider important characteristics
and developing elements
ofthat
complex area.
For that, it is of a special importance that everything is
based on the exact archive resources, specially because of the
fact that since
1952
The Historical Archives in
Kotor
has
received from
Zadar
several hundreds of notes of the
Kotor
Rectorial Office as well as about the Venetian period of ruling,
keeping in mind the fact that the author has spent almost the
whole his life in Archives, being even its director in the last
period of time. So, the most of protagonists of different activities
could be noticed in their full archival name and surname.
The first chapter „The region of
Boka Kotorska,
Bar and Ul-
cinj deals with frontiers, migrations following relations between
Venetian and Turkish domain and on the other hand connections of
domicile citizens, separated by the bonders of foreign power.
The second chapter speaks about the military organization of
the belligerents, considering the existing fortifications, and
immediately after that opens numerous battlefields during those
three militant centuries (Saint League, Cyprus War,
Candían
and
Morey war and the fall of Bar and Ulcinj under the Turkish power)
The third chapter stays on the organization of the city self-
government with the peculiar class relations of a Mediterranean
type under the influence of Venice. But permanent war dangers and
pressing issues in military organization caused the tendency of

strengthening of the main characters of Venetian power while
weakening of the self-governmental powers. Some examples of
abase of Venetian power can be noticed. Special attention is paid to
the economical structure of
Kotor
community, especially to the
problems of salt-pan and the income of the salt selling.
Organizations of craftsmen (brotherhoods, Confraternities) which
protected the interests of some trades are presented. Leather-
workers, shoemakers, makers of slippers were very active then,
while the activities of confraternities of goldsmiths, stone-cutters,
blacksmiths etc. were less in the war period. About the phenomena
of the confraternity of seamen it is said later separately.
The fourth chapter talks about some particulars that
characterize the village autonomies of Pastrovic,
Grblje, Topla
and
Zbor
St. Mihailo.
The fifth chapter tries to explain one of the most important
themes, i.e. phenomena of the strong development of sea -trade and
economy of the numerous small settlements around
Kotor just
during the war troubles. Instead of serving in army in numerous
Venetian battlefields, especially citizens of
Perast, Prcanj
and
Dobroata multiplied their small ships, running profitable selling
putting up new baroque settlements with stone houses, palaces and
churches. Venice gladly supported them financially and fiscally
because it found them as brave fighters against piracy, what at that
moment was of a great importance in Venice.
The sixth chapter is turned to the matter of piracy and
privateering, therefore the cooperation between, in that time
Turkish Ulcinj and
Herceg
Novi
and African barber s center was
stressed. For that there were also noticed some archival data on
occasional pirates actions either from the Venetian territory.
Finally some successful heroical actions of seamen from
Boka
against much stronger pirates were specially processed.
The seventh chapter deals with sacred and religious relations,
noticing three phases, before and after the organization and
operating of Congregation for the spreading of religion.
The eighth chapter about the schooling, language and science
offers some particulars about the city school in
Kotor
and maritime
schooling in
Boka.
Then, some occasions related to language in the
process of teaching, administration, church and family are
presented, specially explaining the field of historiography and low
sciences at the end.

The ninth chapter about the health culture deals with the
particulars about good organization of the health service, with
magistrates, collegiums, lazarettos, hospitals and orphanages.
There are special words about great difficulties in the straggles
against epidemics, specially plague. At the end, paid communal
doctors and druggists are mentioned. But apart from them quack-
doctors and witches existed, managing to obtain from gullible
parents by cunning.
And finally, tenth chapter talks about settlements, culture of
dwelling, social life and customs. The theme is of the special
interest because just in
XVI, XVIII
century big changes in the
numerous settlements happened as well as growing up of the
baroque
Boka.
There are special notice about lace from
Dobrota,
carnivals etc.
