adam_text | For nine fearful years, Delport has
endured nights of torturous mosquitoes
and mysterious drumming and days of
scalding sun as he waits deep in the
African bush for his past to catch up
with him.
When his self-imposed exile in the
wilderness is interrupted by a young
woman with a mask bearing an
uncanny resemblance to his nemesis
and by the death of a loyal employee,
he begins to question the very existence
of those around him.
As his world begins to crumble, as
strangers take on familiar forms and
certainties lose their definition, it is the
riverboat
Mahala
that comes to
symbolise his link with a civilisation
whose significance he is unwilling to
face.
Chris Barnard (1939-) was born near
Nelspruit in South Africa. He studied
Afrikaans, English and French at the
University of Pretoria and became a
journalist. Since
1961,
he has published
four novels and, as one of the most
celebrated Afrikaans writers, has a vast
oeuvre
that encompasses children s
writing, screenplays, television dramas
and short stories.
He was one of the writers in the
1960s
who became known as the Sestigers
( Sixty-ers ), famed for pushing the
boundaries of South African literature.
He has been a publisher, journalist and
film producer. Since
1994,
he has also
cultivated oranges and macadamia
nuts at Thulani near his birthplace.
Mahala
is a psychological thriller about
the
angst
of a generation of white South
Africans whose grip on power is
circumscribed by hidden fears as they
stare into an existential abyss.
Luzette Strauss is a South African
journalist, teacher and translator. She
studied at the University of Cape Town.
She now lives in the UK.
