The Collective Memory
of Polish Society During the Period
of Transformation
-
Summary
The subject of the book is the changes in the vernacular col¬
lective memory of society during the period of transformation in
Poland, i.e. in the years
1989-2004.
The beginning of the period
in question was marked by the fall of communism, while its end in
2004
coincided with Poland s accession to the European Union and
the start of public debate assessing the 3rd Polish Republic , i.e.
the first fifteen years of democracy and free market in the country.
We draw from a number of sources in this work, such as empirical
sociological research (especially studies conducted by the Public
Opinion Research Centre CBOS in
1987,
and by the Institute for
Political Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Pentor
Research International in
2003)
and public opinion polls, while also
making use of press publications and information published on the
Internet.
Chapter one deals with the functioning of collective memory in
everyday life, and focuses on the commercialisation of the past
in the process of market economy development. The transforma¬
tion in Poland (and other countries of Central Europe) did not solely
involve the
démocratisation
of political life and the development of a
free market, but also encompassed taking the country into the cur¬
rent of European integration and globalisation. In many local com¬
munities, these complex and mutually bound processes aroused a
certain activeness pursuing the goals of
1)
seeking and articulating
content relating to the local past, and
2)
then merchandising this
content, i.e. transforming it into products of market value. In the
food segment, the formal system used in the European Union for
The Collective Memory of Polish Society During the Period of Transformation
marking products and country lists, facilitating orientation among
customers regarding traditional food products (while ensuring pro¬
tection and promotion to producers), became an important fac¬
tor stimulating activity within local communities. Analysis of what
is offered by businesses providing products (physical products
or services) related to the human habitat shows that drawing on
the past in this field is multidimensional in character, and furthers
such shaping of product attributes as to enable the satisfying of
a set of varied consumer needs. Traditional products relating to
the past demand an initial guarantee that they fulfil contemporary
functional requirements. In addition, they satisfy four needs expe¬
rienced by consumers:
1)
the original substance of the building
of a historical hotel or traditional methods of production and raw
materials guarantee safety-that a product is authentic, moreover,
it represents high quality and provides practical qualities;
2)
the
aesthetic qualities of a product give consumers a sense of belong¬
ing to a prestigious and elite group of people of high status and
sophisticated aesthetic predilections, while
3)
the product s unique
character enables the expression of individuality and unique pref¬
erences independent of mass trends and tastes;
4)
spending time
in historical buildings or using items made according to traditional
models enables a historical experience for consumers, providing
a personal experience of the past marked by positive emotions.
The purchase of products and search for such experiences may
be recognised as a manifestation of the postmodernist privatisa¬
tion of the past.
Chapter two discusses the development of historical reenact-
menť
in Poland, of social activities oriented towards reconstructing
selected fragments of the past. Three currents of such reconstruc¬
tion have crystallised in Poland since the late
1980s: 1)
that relat¬
ing to the Middle Ages;
2)
Napoleonic
-
although this is rather a
conventional than accurate term, as in Poland it embraces a period
from the late
1
8th century to
1831 ;
and
3)
the twentieth-century cur¬
rent, mostly represented by circles drawing on Polish cavalry tradi¬
tion and groups reconstructing World War II. Reenacting the past
fulfils two functions: first, it increases the attractiveness of loca¬
tions visited by tourists, as contemporary tourism involves seeking
powerful impressions standing out from everyday life; and second,
Summary

some of the reenactment events have in themselves become tour¬
ist attractions drawing thousands of spectators (e.g. the staging
of the
1410
Battle of
Grunwald
held every year in July). Alongside
activities involving the reconstruction of the past, the programmes
of many reenactment events also cover commemorative activities
-
with actors in the roles of present people with the intention of
reminding people of those no longer alive. The presence of such
commemorative activities testifies to historical reenactment being
used for the expression of defined values and staging of collective
identities. Participation in historical reenactment also entails physi¬
cal involvement, and provides a direct,
sensorial
experience to the
participants.
Chapter three discusses the functioning of memory regard¬
ing family history. In the process of economic and social trans¬
formation, Polish families are also changing. Over the past two
decades, traditional models of family organisation and functioning
have weakened, with a simultaneous growth in numbers of those
living together in informal relationships or living by themselves.
Despite these changes, the family still plays a key role in uphold¬
ing memory and creating a sense of continuity and roots among
individuals. The social space of the family constitutes an important
centre for direct and private discussion as a result of which indi¬
vidual perceptions are formed of the past, while indirectly shaping
the vernacular collective memory of a specific society.
Knowledge of one s family tree stretching back over many gen¬
erations is very rare in Poland, although empirical studies suggest
a rising awareness over the last two decades in Polish society
regarding the family s past. Approximately
30%
of respondents in
1970
and
1987
declared to have reasonably detailed knowledge of
grandparents and earlier ancestors, while over
40%
claimed so in
studies conducted during the last decade. Family past is something
better known to people living today in Poland than among previous
generations because the average lifespan is growing, and tech¬
niques for keeping records (photography, filming, audio record¬
ings) have become widespread. Cultural trends and a fashion for
seeking one s family roots are also conducive to enhancing family
memory. The institutionalisation of memory plays a large role in the
upholding and functioning of knowledge about the past
-
with three
The Collective Memory of Polish Society During the Period of Transformation
types of institution established at a family level:
1)
practices of
remembering the past and passing on knowledge regarding fam¬
ily fortunes; surveys in
2003
revealed that approximately
80%
of
respondents claimed to talk about the history of their ancestors
at home, with the family past discussed regularly and reasonably
frequently in around
40%
of Polish homes;
2)
the second insti¬
tution of family memory comprises guardians of family tradition,
persons reconstructing the past of their own family; these sentries
of family memory are mainly seniors, over fifty years old, highly
historically competent and living in cities;
3)
the third institution is
that of collections of family mementos, found in one in two Polish
homes. Such mementos are mainly photographs and documents
of no material value.
Chapter four presents the transformations in the canon of
vernacular national memory
-
a classic problem in Polish stud¬
ies into collective memory conducted since the
1960s.
Lively public
debate about the past, witnessed since
1989
in the media among
intellectuals and in political circles, only has a limited effect on peo¬
ple s attitudes. Data from surveys indicate stability in declarations
regarding interest in the past. The group of those showing particu¬
larly animated interest is unchanging and at the same time small:
in
1987
about
15%
of respondents claimed to be very highly inter¬
ested or highly interested, compared to
21%
in
1996
and
19%
in
2003.
There is also a very high level of stability in the links between
declarations of interest in the past and two factors: education and
age. The higher one s education (correlating positively to social
status and income), the greater the likelihood of being interested in
the past. Older age is also conducive to such openness.
According to research conducted in late
2003,
Poles feel that
the most important anniversaries deserving celebration are: those
marking the recovery of independence in
1918 (49%
of respond¬
ents suggesting this date), the passing of the
3
May Constitution
(25%),
and the end ofWorld War II
(17%).
A comparison with stud¬
ies from
1987
shows almost no change in the percentage insisting
that the anniversary of the passing of Poland s
3
May Constitution
be celebrated, but a distinct rise in the popularity of the anniversary
marking the regaining of independence in
1918 (25%
in
1987).
However, there was a significant drop in the numbers feeling that
Summary
458
the anniversary of the end of World War II required celebration
(down from
46%
in
1987).
In
2003,
nobody supported celebrating
dates linked to the establishment of the Polish People s Republic.
The majority of respondents
-
approximately three quarters (both
in
1987
and
2003) -
perceived aspects of the national past that
one could be proud of. Shameful aspects are more troublesome:
about one in three felt there were persons or facts one should be
ashamed of, while
20%
of respondents categorically declared
there to be nothing one should be ashamed of in Poland s national
past. There was also a high percentage of those claiming to have
no opinion on the matter (from about
40%
to
50%).
After
1990,
the time horizon in Poles national memory short¬
ened, their perception absorbed by more recent decades. In
2003,
in response to the question regarding persons Poles could be proud
of, the respondents most often mentioned John Paul II
(43%),
Józef
Piłsudski
(23%),
Lech Wałęsa
(16%),
Tadeusz Kościuszko
(14%),
and Nicholas Copernicus
(10%).
In
2003,
outstanding command¬
ers, for example
Tadeusz Kościuszko, Władysław Jagiełło
or
Jan
III
Sobieski,
were quoted significantly less often than in
1987
as
sources of national pride. One could also see change in the values
for which national heroes were held in esteem. There was a rise
in the popularity of positive personal traits, religion and democracy,
as well as the significance and fame of Poland in the world. On the
other hand, military successes were mentioned less often than in
1987.
A comparison of studies conducted in
2003
with findings from
1987
shows how social perception of historical eras is gradually
changing. In
2003,
the following topics were in the centre of public
interest: the 3rd Polish Republic
(1989-2004),
the period between
the world wars
(1918-1939),
and the years of communism
(1944-
1989).
World War II, which as recently as in the late nineteen eight¬
ies continued to focus Poles opinion, has clearly ceased to domi¬
nate
-
while remaining important for national memory. Facts from
the distant past (from the very beginnings of Polish statehood to the
end of the 15th century) as well as events of the
1
6th—
1
8th centuries
are currently much less often sources of pride for society than was
the case in
1987.
Victorious military achievements and the sacri¬
ficial fight for freedom were the reasons given most often in
2003
The Collective Memory of Polish Society During the Period of Transformation
for why Poles are proud of what happened in the past. However,
one can clearly see that today such values as democracy, religion,
and the significance and fame of Poland around the world were
mentioned much more often than in the late
1980s.
Chapter five is dedicated to perception of the years of com¬
munism among members of Polish society. In
2003,
a few
months before Poland s accession to the European Union,
43%
of
adult Poles positively rated communist times , with one third
(34%)
having a negative view of the period. Analysis of the results shows
strong correlation between the opinion of the People s Republic
and social class, identifying three discrete segments. The first con¬
sists of young, dynamic people, their life ahead of them, who are
actively seeking their place in Poland today
-
they rarely rate the
People s Republic positively, with many giving no thought at all to
the near past. The second is made up of what is termed the intel¬
ligentsia in Central and Eastern Europe: white collars, managers,
free professions. Today, they are being absorbed into the middle
class, learning their new roles, yet uncertain of their new status.
The views of the middle class about the People s Republic are dif¬
ferentiated by age. The younger ones (aged up to about
40)
see
themselves as the middle class , and most are highly critical of
pre-1989 days. The older ones, over
40,
and in communist times
termed the working intelligentsia (i.e. not parasitic ), have deep
firsthand experience of the People s Republic and often see posi¬
tives of life in that period. The third segment comprises those who
gained the least from the changes: blue collar workers, peasants,
pensioners, the unemployed, and non-working housewives. Close
to half see the old times in a positive light, and about one fourth
are critical.
In the memory of contemporary Poles, the Polish People s
Republic is perceived as a state that used violence and restricted
the freedom of its citizens, while taking care of ordinary working
people , ensuring them an average standard of living, predictable
and stable. Tendencies to idealise the past system while simulta¬
neously criticising today s democratic states and their free mar¬
ket economy systems are seen in all post-communist countries,
although in some they are more intense and more common than
in Poland. On the other hand, Polish society does not stand out
Summary

against the rest of the region with a critical attitude towards the
communist past. One sees positive attitudes towards the past
order equally as often in Poland or even more often than in the
Czech Republic, Hungary or in Romania.
The sixth and final chapter continues to deal with the issue
of the memory of communism
-
and refers to the state of mar¬
tial law imposed in Poland on
13
December
1981
by the com¬
munist powers as a reaction to the emergence of the independ¬
ent trade union Solidarity . An image of a deeply divided society
emerges from studies conducted in the years
1982-1983
by offi¬
cial polling organisations: a significant portion were highly critical
of the martial law and the political system that was a result of its
imposition. Those highly critical made up approximately one quar¬
ter of all respondents, and were most often young people, living
in large cities, labourers and members of the young intelligentsia.
On the other hand, the findings reveal well the social segments
inclined to display conformist behaviour and those declaring sup¬
port for martial law.
The vast majority of those covered by surveys organised and
conducted in the early
1
980s by sociologists independent of the
state authorities felt that the decision to impose martial law was
wrong. For respondents from the ranks of the opposition, martial
law was a political decision taken under pressure from the USSR,
motivated by fear among Poland s leaders of losing power and
their aspiration to destroy Solidarity . The critical assessment of
martial law was also a result of the conviction that Poland s prob¬
lems could not be solved by violence. A fascinating subject that did
not fit within the logic of the official polls was the formation of an
underground society
-
of interpersonal bonds and mutual help.
Political transformation can influence the mechanisms of collec¬
tive memory in various ways. In Poland, following the collapse of
communism, no universally accepted interpretation of events from
the recent past was formed, and martial law remains a deeply con¬
troversial subject. In collective memory, we can observe an over¬
lapping in the autobiographic memory of the events witnesses and
the memory among members of the younger generations based
on accounts passed down by the media and the education system.
Martial law made its most lasting mark in the memory of those
The Collective Memory of Polish Society During the Period of Transformation
aged approximately between
15
and
35
when it was imposed,
with the lowest level of recollection observed among the young¬
est respondents. In the opinion of most Poles, martial law and the
years that followed were a bad time for the country and its citizens.
Yet despite the bad memories, during the fifteen years since the
collapse of communism approximately half the people of Poland
invariably believe martial law to have been justified, with one quar¬
ter of the opposite opinion and another quarter with no opinion.
There are also very evident links between one s current political
stance and one s attitude towards the decision of
1981:
left-wing
views today are conducive to the acceptance of the historical deci¬
sion, while right-wing views favour an opinion of the imposition of
martial law being unjustified. Assessment of the decision to impose
martial law is connected to how one perceives the motives behind
it. Various surveys have revealed that avoiding aggression from the
Soviet Union is the strongest argument appealing to Polish society,
and the one explaining most suggestively the validity of putting the
country under martial law. This theory s persuasive power comes
from the combination of two factors: firstly, it derives from so-called
hypothetical history, thus making it very difficult to verify; secondly,
it is deeply rooted in the states of fear evoked in Polish society dur¬
ing the years of communism.
