SUMMARY
Macedonian-Adrianople movement in the Bulgarian Principality s
Kyustendil district rose and developed as a result of the influence of a few factors as
follows: Bulgarian nation s dismemberment according to the miserable Berlin
Contract
(1878)
which left Macedonia and Adrianople district under the Otomanian
Empire power; The geographical situation of the district along the Bulgarian-Turkish
border; the multiple population availability; born or coming from the neighbour
Macedonia; century-old cultural, economical and family connections with this
district. The relevant combinations of preconditions determined the strategic place of
the district in the revolutionary fights for the national union, acquired an organized
character in the
90s
of the
ХГХ
century with the foundation of the legal Macedonian-
Adrianople Organization (MAO) in the Bulgarian Principality and the foundation of
the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (IMARO).
The organizational and ideological consolidation of the refugees from the
Macedonia and the Adrianople district in the Bulgarian Principality
(1894)
led to the
foundation of their societies in the Kyustendil district. MAO reached its structural
boom in the end of the
XIX
century and the beginning of the XX century
(1899 -
1901)
when at the head of the organizational governing body
-
the Supreme
Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Committee (SMAC) Lieutenant Boris
Sarafov was placed. Until the spring of
1901
about
30
Macedonian-Adrianople
societies with over
3000
members were created and worked making around
11 %
of
the total strength of the organization in the Bulgarian Principality. The biggest and
most important societies were situated in the cities Kyustendil and Dupnitsa
-
main
administrative and economical centers of the region. A tight net of societies had been
created in the border villages as these societies canalized the mighty moral and
material support of the Bulgarians from the Bulgarian Principality for their
compatriots in Macedonia. The same importance had the supporting and
conspiratorial sections of MAO
-
the delegate institute, the various students and
youth study groups, national marksmen s organizations and the secret officer s
fellowships.
The Supreme committee of B. Sarafov and MAO succeeded in establishing
an extremely close cooperation with IMARO. In the period
1895-1896
the Internal
Organization had regular relations with Macedonian refugees and societies in the
district. These contacts were materialized in so-called border, stations which were
responsible for the illegal channels to Macedonia. Such posts were made in the
Kyustendil and Dupnitsa districts. Post superiors were Nikola Zografov(in
Kyustendil) and Nikola Malashevski (in Dupnitsa).
bi
the beginning of
1897
the
Foreign representation (FR) of IMARO in Sofia had been established as well. At first
Gotse Delchev and Gyorche
Petrov
were members of FR, and then they were
replaced by Tushe Deliivanov
-
Dimitar
Štefanov
and Dr. Hristo Tatarchev
-
Hristo
Matov
-
Pere Toshev.
Exactly the essential contribution of the foreign
representatives Georche
Petrov
and Gotse Delchev led to the rapprochement between
MARO and SMAC of B. Sarafov. We have to say that G. Delchev and
G. Petrov
284_____________________________________________________________
were members of SMAC by rights , and the post superiors in the district
N.
Malashevski and
N.
Zografov were appointed as permanent Committee
agentsCdelegates). Thanks to the interaction between both liberation centers a
immense quantity of weapons and ammunition was imported in Macedonia through
the channels of Dupnitsa and Kyustendil districts. Many armed groups had been sent
as well that provided a basis for the Rebel s institute of IMARO, i.e. the illegal army
for protection of the oppressed Bulgarian population by the Turkish regime. The
Macedonian-Adrianople societies in the Bulgarian Principality and the district
gathered solid financial resources for the needs of the revolutionary fight in
Macedonia and Adrianople district.
bi
the relations of FR with SMAC serious contradictions appeared that
gradually turned into a big gap. These contradictions were caused mostly by the
different conceptions for the tactics of the liberation fight. IMARO relied on a long-
lasting revolutionization of the Bulgarian elements in Macedonia and Adrianople
district. Just the other way round SMAC considered that the actions made until this
moment are enough for an efficient revolutionary campaign that would lead to the
interference of the Great Powers and to an autonomous status of both districts. The
leadership ambitions of B. Sarafov played also a certain role as they conflicted him
not only with the Internal Organization, but also with the secret officer s fellowships
that had helped him to obtain the chairman s position. Because of the refusal of B.
Sarafov to give up the leadership to the generally accepted fellowships leader
-
General Ivan Tsonchev, the first had been disowned by most of the officers. So the
liberation movement reached the brink of cleavage. In Bulgaria, in
1902
the steady
supporters of the Internal Organization (the so-called centrists ) in the Bulgarian
Principality, which B. Sarafov had joined as well, grouped themselves organizational
around the Supreme committee Stanishev-Karayovov. Their opponents, the so-called
superiors (varhovisti) grouped themselves around the Supreme committee
Mihaylovski-Tsonchev, elected on the Ninth
(1901)
and reelected on the Tenth
Macedonian-Adrianople Congress
(1902).
Ever since the summer of
1901
SMAC
Mihaylovski-Tsonchev began a uprising s preparation in Macedonia. The motive
power of the superiority unconditionally was the officer s corps of the Bulgarian
Army. Among the superior leaders significant figures showed up such as these of
Ivan Tsonchevivice-chairman of SMAC), colonel Anastas Yankov and lieutenant-
colonel Stefan Nikolov(advising member of SMAC). The chairman of the superior
Committee was the popular public figure and writer Stoyan Mihaylovski.
The sharp rivalry between the recent associates unavoidably influenced the
quantitative and qualitative growth of the Macedonian-Adrianople structures in the
Kyustendil district. The crisis harshly reduced the number and the membership of the
Macedonian-Adrianople societies, and the disappointed public withdrew from the
movement. Regardless of the general downfall SMAC Mihaylovski-Tsonchev
declared the Gorna Dzhumaya uprising in the autumn of
1902.
The basis of the
revolutionary actions was the Kyustendil district where the superiors nevertheless
retained partly their influence. The uprising had been suppressed very fast by the
Turkish Army and thousands of refugees came to the district. The concerns about
___________________________________________________________ 285
their rescuing were taken by charity commissions that included competent local
representatives of the parties from the whole political spectrum, representatives of
the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and such of the Jewish community.
In international aspect the Macedono-Adrianople movement met with the
resistance of the Great Powers and the neighbor Balkan countries. They were startled
by the ghost of Bulgaria from
San Stefano
disguised transparently by the autonomous
slogan of the Bulgarian national-liberation organizations. The main motive power of
the external pressure on the Bulgarian Principality for drastic measures against the
revolutionaries was Russia, especially interested in the maintenance of the Balkan
status quo. The Russian ideas had their response during the period
1901-1903
when
Russophile parties (The Democratic and the Progressive-liberal parties) and the
monarch Prince Ferdinand governed the country as they were not without reason
afraid of the movement which was getting beyond the control of the responsible state
institutions. For that reason on the 30th. January
1903
the government of Dr. Stoyan
Danev outlawed both Supreme committees and their sections, but the illegal IMARO
remained unaffected and kept the organizational system of the FR with the stations
and channels in the Kyustendil district. With the governmental act a possibility
appeared at last for the re-establishment of the unity in the revolutionary actions.
Although a formal agreement was not concluded, the superiors and centrists shed
their blood together during the time of Dinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising in the summer
and autumn of
1903.
In the last reckoning exactly the cooperation between IMARO
and MAO generalizes in the most detailed and true way the content of the movement
in the Kyustendil district which arose not to confront, but to bring the free Bulgarian
and the enslaved Bulgarian in Macedonia close together.
