Final conclusions
The main idea of this work lies in the debate
regarding the act of education in the Hungarian area of the
dualist state: education as such or patriotic education and
therefore political?
It was very clear that with the
instauration
of the
dualist state, school legislation couldn t balance the national
objectives and the specialized ones, evenly. Thus the political
and cultural elite chose to focus mainly on the affirmation and
development of one culture, the Hungarian one.
The Orthodox Archbishopsy of Transylvania tried
throughout the whole period that we are dealing with, to obey
the mentioned legislation. Therefore, not only the founded
critics to these laws are highlighted but also its own lacks for
the improvement of which the church is still fighting.
Maybe the best answer to the pedagogical
.
problem of the scholar issue was shown by the rich content of
the Romanian publications. What is written in the pages of
these publications represents a clear evidence of the professors
real interests towards everything related to pedagogy.
Although classified as action and debate, to a clear
space, the school
memos
of the church just like the Synods of
the Orthodox Archbishopsy of Transylvania are a clear
example of everything that deals with the realizing of the
obstacles that the confessional school of orthodox origin from
the Romanian environment had to overcome.
Invoking the recognized authority of the Orthodox
church, obtained at Vienna by the bishop Andrei Saguna, the
Consistorium from
Sibiu
searched and found through the most
varied ways, answers to meet the dualist state s demands but

also those imposed by the believers whose children populated
the mentioned schools.
Furthermore, in this context, the new elements
brought by school inspections reinforced, mainly, the image
regarding the evolution of primary confessional schools but
also of Romanian high schools.
The dualist state s school legislation emphasized
the necessity of reconsidering the status of teachers from the
Romanian orthodox environment, who, beyond the effort and
the patriotic quality of their teaching, had to come down from
their pedestals in order to live. The battle between the state and
the two Romanian churches, imposed a clarification of the
connections not only towards the eternal enemy
-
the dualist
state
-
but also towards the Orthodox Church and the Greco-
catholic Romanian church in the context in which the
possibility and necessity of modifications were in sight.
In what concerns the scholarships given to those
who deserved them, until the Gojdu Foundation appeared, the
Orthodox environment had made great efforts to help after
primary education, a much needed cultural and therefore
political elite. The evolution of granting scholarships in the
orthodox environment from
Sibiu
separated itself only by the
increased number of those who benefited from them and by
their diversity. The period that we are referring to set itself
apart as being the most important because of its achievements.
The conferences of the teachers became very
important under many aspects. First of all, their first order of
the agenda has shown, particularly under the influence of
dualist school legislation, an increased interest both towards
the evolution of pedagogy and for the development of the
confessional school as a whole.
Through numerous and complex debates, from the
minutes of the mentioned conferences, two tendencies are
obvious and their separation is reduced as much as possible, at

least theoretically: the wish of those involved to act both as
good citizens of the dualist state and also as good teachers of
the nation that they were part of, the Romanian one.
Especially after going through the gauntlets of
Appony Albert s legislation, the teacher from the Romanian
confessional school, understood better the difficulties imposed
by the new status that the dualist state tried to implement.
One of the conclusions that must be drawn is
about the maintaining of an organic, unbreakable tie between
the church and its daughter , the school.
Despite the official legislation, the Orthodox
Archbishopsy of Transylvania was able to involve the teachers
in a work of individual improvement and at the same time open
a new path to call the people, by placing its traditions and
legends at the forefront.
Thus, the school came to be regarded, in the
Romanian environment, regardless of the confession, the
institution that provides basic education but also that can be,
depending on the times, the real sense of belonging to a nation.
