Polish Stereotype Views of Modern World
The study presents a survey of Polish Anti-Semitism including
the contemporary custom of the so-called Anti-Semitism without
Jews, and the main milestones of the last two hundred years of Po¬
lish relations to the Jewish element. Covering the metamorphoses
of the Polish stereotype of the Jew throughout the 19th and 20th
centuries, it attempts to capture the specifics of the historical deve¬
lopment of the modern Polish society as well as the role which Jews,
or rather their image, played in the establishment of the collective
identity of the Polish nation. Realising the socio-economic position
of the jews in Polish society, it documents the latter s relative eco¬
nomic backwardness in relation to the world division of labour as
well as its vulnerable position between Germany and Russia.
The study deals with the Jewish stereotype as knowledge which
objectively exists in the Polish social reality, i.e. independently of
individual people sharing the view in question, and which in the
context of the study at the same time represents a certain antinomy
to Polish self-definition. It decodes the
stereotypie
view of the Jew
as a specific form of xenophobia and the interpretation of its sym¬
bolic language uncovers its generally valid function in the realm of
the societie s consciousness, exposing emotions and their trigger¬
ing mechanisms which under specific circumstance lead to violence
waged against foreigners (Jews).
The factual base of the study stems namely from the social events
and realities existing in Austrian-held
Galicia
and Russian (Con¬
gress) Poland between roughly the mid-ijjth century and 1918, and
subsequently during the inter-war period and then the post-war
Communist Poland until
1968
when the regime forced the over¬
whelming majority of Jewish or Jewish origin citizens to leave the
country. Special attention is paid to the Polish treatment of Jews

during WWII and the Holocaust. The Polish stereotype know¬
ledge of the Jews seen from several different perspectives given by
various social contexts represents the narration line of the study
which is therefore divided into six chapters.
The first deals with the Jewish stereotype and its function in the
milieu of Polish village life, attempting to sketch the essential con¬
tours of the world view adopted by only superficially Christianised
peasants in non-specific historical times and serving as the base for
the grasp of modern (Polish) Anti-Semitism. The stereotype know¬
ledge envisages the Jew as the surrogate of Death, a fact most clearly
shown by the belief in ritual murder representing a relict surviving
from pagan times when natural or war disasters demanded that the
angry deities should be placated by human sacrifice. The chapter
also dwells on the role of the Jews in (post)feudal society of the
erstwhile Polish-Lithuanian union and on the social antagonisms
which the said role provoked among peasantry.
Chapter II shows the entirely different (urban) world of Polish
aristocracy, its insurgent and conservatively Catholic traditions as
well as the birth of modern nationalist movement, the second chap¬
ter follows the development of the originally positive attitudes to
the Jews once held by the nobles. Affected by the onset of the In¬
dustrial Revolution following the abolishment of serfdom and the
increasing national oppression in force in the Russian and Prussian
parts of Poland this relationship gradually deteriorated. The last
part of Chapter II deals with the obstacles faced by the historically
weak ethnic Polish burghers in their transformation into modern
bourgeoisie. With respect to the Jews who supplemented its role to
a large extent, the study notes the genesis of modern Polish (middle
class) collective identity including the birth of the so-called Anti-
Polonism as a Weltanschaung seeing the modern world as a conspira¬
cy directed solely against Poland and the Poles.
The distinct role of emancipation-experiencing Jews in the so¬
cialist movement of the last third of the 19th century and in the
inter-war Communist party seen in the context with the growing
Anti-Semitic sentiments is the subject of the third chapter. It focus¬
es on the stereotype image of a Jewish bolshevist strengthened by
the experience from the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1921 led over the
frontiers of a newly independent Polish state. The last part of the
chapter concentrates on the
1939-1941
Soviet occupation of eastern
parts of Poland and on the alleged Jewish collaboration with the
old-new Russian occupant.

The stereotype image of the Jew and its role in Polish politics
from the 1890 s to
1968
(except the period of Nazi occupation), and
Anti-Semitism as a political doctrine are dealt with in the fourth
chapter. Emerging attempts at solving the Jewish question are
seen
-
together with the preceding chapter
-
within the context of
the grave economic hardships and the related frustrations.
The fifth chapter analyses the xenophobic stereotype of the Jew
as knowledge that became an actual behaviour under specific cir¬
cumstances of the pogroms. Their mechanism is dealt with by the
description of violence in model cases which took place in Warsaw
(1881), Lwov (1918) and
Kielce
(1946).
Apart from this, the chapter
also describes the pogroms of the last decades of the Czarist regime,
violence engulfing Austrian
Galicia
in
1898,
massacres committed
with respect to the 1918 declaration of independence and the Polish
campaign in the east as well as with violence marking the period of
the Great Depression.
The last chapter is devoted to acts of assistance, aid and lifesav-
ing as well as denunciation, dispossession and murdering of the
Jews on the parts of the Poles during the Holocaust. Specific at¬
tention is also paid to Polish local versions of the end solution
effected in 1941 in the territories won by Nazi Germany from the
Soviet Union, with the examples of massacres committed in the
towns of
Jedwabne
and
Radziłów
documenting the interaction of
the archaic stereotype of the Jews and modern rationale.
The conclusion of the study documents the debate which
took place in Poland in
2000-2002
on the controversial work by
the American historian and sociologist
Jan Tomasz
Gross on the
Jedwabne
pogrom. Using Gross premises, this study attempts to
capture the specific problems and the deformed understanding of
reality which both officially and consensually preserved false no¬
tions about the past maintained for many long decades brought
about in Polish society.
Apart from Polish, German, Russian, Anglo-Saxon, Israeli, Czech
and Byelorussian historiography, the study is based namely on pe¬
riod newspaper articles, pamphlets, witness accounts, memoirs and
sociological researches. Particular attention is paid to fiction depict¬
ing human types corresponding to the methodology used.
