PREFACE
The valley along the Middle Course of
Struma
(Strymon) River, enclosed within
Kresna and Roupel defiles, is an area of ample antiquity monuments, most of them epi-
graphic marble pieces. Its geography is very well outlined, a circumstance that naturally
influences its specific historic development. Data from antiquity sources reveals beyond
doubt that the Thracian tribe of Maedi inhabited the area since early periods. The
Maedi overcame many challenges in the course of their historic development to keep
independent against invasions of both the earliest rulers of ancient Macedonia
-
Philip
II and Alexander the Great, and the last two kings of Macedonia
-
Philip V and Perseus.
After the Romans destroyed the Macedonian state in

B.C., the Maedi tribe became
independent again and kept invading the Roman Province of Macedonia, established
after
148
B.C. Many antiquity sources, as well as some epigraphic pieces from Greece
supply with evidence of these invasions.
It is already clear that the Roman administration of the Province of Macedonia
had constant problems with the Maedi until the battle at Actium in

B.C. It was only
in
29-28
B.C., during the march of Marcus Licinius Crassus Dives, the military leader
of
Octavian
Augustus, when the Romans gained permanent control over the Maedi
territories in the valley along the Middle Course of
Struma
River. Then, the Romans
decided that it would be best to include the Maedi territories within the Roman Province
of Macedonia, so that they will have no more problems with this militant tribe
(Геров
1961, 177).
Actually, this territory became the northeastern part of the Province of Mac¬
edonia, which is now within the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria.
Until recently, it was believed that the epigraphic monuments from this region dated
from the Roman period alone, and more precisely from the beginning of 2nd c, the time
of Trajan and Hadrian, to about the mid 3 1

However, a number of new pieces were
discovered during the past couple of years. Although most of them are not published
yet, we have grounds to claim that they date to the Hellenistic period. The majority of
the epigraphic monuments analyzed in this work are published in the monograph of B.
Gerov
(1961),
but without illustrations. They were also included in G. Mihailov s Corpus
of Greek Inscriptions Discovered in the Territory of Bulgaria (Inscriptiones Graecae in
Bulgaria repertae), volumes IV
(1966)
and V
(1997).
However, during the process of
documenting the epigraphic pieces housed in the Museums of History in Blag-oevgrad,
Sandanski and Petrich, it turned out that part of them
-
about
40
in number, have not
been published. In addition, there are also a few epigraphic monuments from the area
along
Struma
River Middle Course that are with Latin inscriptions and thus they could
not enter G. Mihailov s corpus.
I have to note that there was not a single epigraphic monument known from the
studied legion that dated from the Hellenistic period at the time of the publication of B.
Gerov s monographic work in
1961
and even after the publication of G. Mihailov s volume

(1997)
of the Greek inscriptions from the territory of Bulgaria. B. Gerov was not aware
either of any archeological finds from the area of the Middle Course of
Struma
River that
dated to the Pre-Roman period. In the past
20
years, however, the new archaeological
finds drew a different picture of the region, and now we have a certain number of finds
from the Pre-Roman period
-
mainly from the Hellenistic period, that unfortunately
are not published properly yet. Most of them originate from the area of Rupite (former
Mouletarovo) and its close surroundings, and the author knows

epigraphic monuments
dating from the Pre-Roman (mainly Hellenistic) period from Rupite alone. Five of these
monuments are presented in the current research. Moreover, B. Gerov notes that at the
time of his publication there was not an epigraphic monument that was dated according
to the calendar of the provincial Macedonian era. Nowadays, we already have several
inscriptions originating from the studied area that are dated according to both calen¬
dars known in the Province of Macedonia
-
to the Actium era and to the old provincial
Macedonian era (inscriptions No
5, 26, 47, 53, 157
here).
All these facts give solid grounds for the current research. This work is of a corpus-
type and aims to analyze and present in a systematic way all Greek and Latin inscrip¬
tions from the studied region, published so far in various sources, as well as to include
all recently found epigraphic monuments in old Greek and Latin, both published and
unpublished. For the sake of completeness, I have also included several epigraphic monu¬
ments, claimed to be from the region of
Struma
River Middle Course, that belong to
private collections in Sofia. The current publication includes all epigraphic monuments
from the region presented in volumes IV and V of the Corpus of Greek Inscriptions
Discovered in the Territory of Bulgaria (Inscriptiones Graecae in Bulgaria repertae) by
G. Mihailov. Thus, it is a complete presentation based on the most important fact
-
that
the region between Kresna and Roupel defiles is an area outlined both geographically
and historically in ancient times, which in

B.C. was part of the northeastern Roman
Province of Macedonia, and now in the territory of Bulgaria. Moreover, the majority of
the epigraphic monuments are presented in G. Mihailov s Corpus without any comments,
and without suggestions about their date thus bearing no data about their production
based on the dates of the Actium (Augustan) era or of the provincial Macedonian era.
In addition, I have discovered some inexact or even incorrect descriptions of the actual
texts in the presentation of some of the inscriptions published by G. Mihailov and I have
tried to update them in the current publication. I have presented here over
40
inscrip¬
tions that have not been published or were presented in the very recent years. Some of
the monuments were published long before volume V of G. Mihailov s corpus
(1997)
was out of print, but were not included in it. I would claim the need for the existence of
the current publication in the form it is presented, based on the considerations, listed
above, for completeness and collocation of the epigraphic monuments from the ancient
geographic and historical region in the valley along the Middle Course of
Struma
River
that was an administrative part of the Roman Province of Macedonia after the third
quarter of the 1st

B.C. until at least the mid or late the 3rd
с
A.D.
The presentation is in two parts. The first one is theoretical and is an attempt to
clarify some major problems, related to the historical development of the region during
the antiquity. Some specific issues related to the study of the epigraphic monuments are
also considered.
The second part is a catalogue of the epigraphic monuments. They are presented
with their original text
-
in Old Greek in most of the cases, and in Latin in a few cases,
with translation into Bulgarian, dating and short comments on the data of each inscrip¬
tion. The epigraphic monuments from the valley along the Middle Course of
Struma

enter according to their location, typology and chronology. The majority of the
monuments are presented with photos that are organized in tables at the end of the work
as their numbers match the entries in the catalogue.

REVIEW OF THE RESEARCH ON THE TOPIC
Interest in antiquity finds from the region between Kresna and Roupel defiles
began as early as the late 19th

in a number of publications presented data on epigraphic monuments that were
accidentally discovered in the region of the Middle Course of
Struma
River.
D.P.Dimitrov
issued the first overall presentation of the antiquity stone monuments
from the northeastern part of the Roman Province of Macedonia in
1939.
D.P.
Dimitrov
attempted to present the inscribed as well as the non-inscribed stone monuments from
the valley along the
Struma
River Middle Course, and listed and interpreted them
mainly according to the principles of history of art. He identified the initial source of
the stone portrait plastic art in the valley along the Middle Course of
Struma
River
-
the stone art in Rome itself, and he also pointed out the nearest iconographical paral¬
lels from
Vardar
Macedonia and from northern Greece
(Димитров
1939).
Although
he made a very detailed study of the monuments in the mentioned area, he failed to
realize that the years inscribed on most of the monuments were actually according to
the calendar of the Actium era. Thus, the majority of these monuments were actually
dated incorrectly. In
1961,
B. Gerov published the first part of his research on antiquity
in the today s territory of southwestern Bulgaria, titled Studies on the West Thracian
Territories in Roman Times
(Геров
1961).
It presents in detail the historic geography of
these territories, as well as all epigraphic monuments known at that time from the val¬
ley along the Middle Course of
Struma
River, and also from the regions of Kyustendil,
Pernik and Sofia. The study of B. Gerov comes as a solid ground for further research
and interpretations of the epigraphic monuments and for data of antiquity authors
about that region, which B. Gerov collected precisely and commented on. In this study
he criticizes the dating of the monuments presented by D.P.
Dimitrov,
and he corrects
the dating completely. The data of the epigraphic monuments collected by B. Gerov
are very well utilized by G. Mihailov, who, adding also some recently discovered pieces,
included them in volume IV (Mihailov
1966),
and later in volume V (Mihailov
1997)
of the Corpus of Greek Inscriptions Discovered in Bulgaria (in Latin). There are also
several studies of the settlement life and epigraphic monuments from the valley along
the Middle Course of
Struma
River issued by V Velkov
(Велков
1961;
Велков
1963;
Velkov
1981).
He tried to confirm the observations and conclusions of B. Gerov on the
historic development of the region, based on the archaeological research and terrain
observations, as well as on the data from the epigraphic monuments from the antiquity
settlement at Ilindentsi and
Goma Gradeshnitsa,
and from the antiquity
polis
at the
today s town of Sandanski. The data from the antiquity site at Ilindentsi and
Goma
Gradeshnitsa provides grounds to suggest
a polis
character and military functions of the
settlement, established to defend the roads to the North of Kresna Defile
(Велков
1963,
142).
In 1970ies and 1980ies a number of researchers published data about monuments
from this settlement

In 1980ies, the first archaeologi¬
cal excavations of the site began. Unfortunately, they were rather limited and actually
