SUMMARY
Imagologic and social
imaginary studies have been a very debated
subject lately. The frequency itself and the persistence of such
researches emphasize the importance of the theme, which is obvious if
we accept the idea that the historian searches the events granting them an
interpretation according to his intellectual training and his overall vision
on reality.
The innovating spirit brought by the events of December
1989
determined the orientation of the Romanian historical school towards a
new historical
—
geographical direction
-
the school of mentalities,
setting it free from the overwhelming ballast of the events, orienting it
towards the man in the diversity of his manifestations. The New History
(la
Nouvelle historie)
grouped around the magazine
„Les Annales ,
created in
1929
at Strasbourg, having important representatives such as:
Lucien Fevre, Marc Bloch, Jaques Le
Goff, Jean Delumeau
etc, lent an
overall dimension to the historical research, thus emphasizing the
modalities through which the members of the formal societies perceived
the world, life, history as well as the system of values which, in the end,
marked the social and historical representations.1
The latest changes at the social, political and economical level
-
the fall of the Communist regime, the foundation of the political
pluralism and of market economy,
-
tend to demonstrate that a society
cannot set itself entirely free from the myth since some of the essential
characteristics of the mythical behaviour
-
exemplary model of the
embodiment of some messianic expectations
-
are universally valid to
every human condition. When Young entitled one of his books „The
man in search of the Soul he meant that the modern world, which had
undergone a crisis during the last two centuries, due to its rupture from

Christianity as a consequence of the French Revolution, was searching
for a new myth which would allow it to find again a new spiritual source
and would confer it the necessary creative forces.
There were lots of discussions concerning the existence of the
myth in the modern societies. Due to the fact that the myth emphasizes a
doubtful existence, it was said to represent a modality of depicting the
world totally opposed to ours. The other tendency emphasized by the
specialists in the mythical field took shape through its integration in the
history of the collective thinking. According to the evolution of the
modern world, some attributes of the mythical behavior were preserved
in their profundity; an eloquent example in this direction may represent
the adherence of some members of a society to certain national symbols:
the national flags, the army and the national church. The utilization of
these attributes of the national sovereignty leads to the idea that there is
an
axiologic
continuity between the
„pre
-
industrial world and the
modern one at both the human life and social level. The only notable
difference is still given by the propensity manifested by the individuals
belonging to the modern society towards a certain thinking which was
almost
inexistent
in
pre
-
industrial civilizations.
The persistence of the myth in modern times has been determined
by the fact that the objective reality cannot protect the individual in front
of illusion since every man „sees especially the image which he or she
brings with himself or herself. The symbolic thinking, an integrated part
of the human being, appears before language and discursive thinking. It
is always accompanied by the image and they both determine the birth
of the myth. The conclusion of the last investigations in the mythological
field emphasizes the idea that in times of economical, social and political
crises, a symbolic way of thinking becomes activated again; this type of
tliinking appeals to a fundamental
imagistic
background.
The individual s tendency toward symbols and myths can be
interpreted as a reaction of self-defense, the amplification of archetypal
images in the totality of the collective manifestations working some
inevitable social changes. Thus, the primordial world recovered in the
symbolic imaginary is much richer than the ideological symbolism of
every historical moment and through its projection in the
contemporaneity it way led to the progress of the civilization.
According to Georges
Sorel,
human beings, regardless time and
space need myths in order to offer explanations to daily failures. The

appeal to the myth has the value of an exemplary paradigm necessary for
the effort of understanding the realities and the existential challenges. In
his conception, the role of the myth is not to stabilize a compromised
situation but to create an explosive situation and to generate the action
by focusing the energies towards an objective2. Due to this belief which
makes possible the elimination of the „existential evil , whole
generations of people succeeded in surpassing the great tensions of the
history, avoiding the desperate gestures of the cruel fatality which
always lead to a pessimistic vision. It is known that the major events of
the modern epoch were prepared by true revolutions in thinking. The
French revolution cannot be imagined without the role of the
Enlightenment thinking. The historical thinking can be saved only if it
becomes practical thinking. As a result of this delay concerning the
reality, the whole theme becomes a myth without the facts that make it
authentic. The attempt of defining the myth challenged the sensibility of
lots of men of culture. Each of them wanted to find a solution to the
problem by appealing to the methodology, information and sensibility of
the epoch. Out of the meaning of fiction, one may reach sometimes the
initial meaning of true history, and then again the value of moral symbol
or fable through which the individual aggressed by the social or natural
environment searches for explanations and solutions to the problems he
is forced to face. From the etymological point of view, the term „myth
comes from the Greek word
-
story and designates a traditional narration
created at the border between the cosmic world and the human world,
whose specific content, deriving in sacred forms from a society,
culturally delayed or regressed through alienation, models the concrete
explanation of the enigmatic phenomena and events of the human
existence3.
Analyzing the myth from an inner perspective, Mircea Eliade
confers it an ample theoretical approach and the most complex
definitions up to present, which are comprised in four aspects:

myth constitutes the history of the supernatural beings
deeds.

This story is considered to be absolutely true (because it
corresponds with reality) and sacred (because it is the supernatural
beings creation).

myth always refers to a creation; it relates the birth of
something, of an institution or of a human community. This is why
myths constitute a paradigm for all the significant human activities.

The knowledge of the myth determines the possibility of
finding out the origin of things and of controlling and manipulating
everything4.
According to this definition, one may infer that myths are the
human spirits attempts to reveal the mystery of human existence
metaphorically, an exercise of the collective memory, which are
performed in the present moment and, as a result, in front of the
objective reality, some of the data of the mythical discourse may be
„deformed compared to the chronological order and the positive logic
which can be anytime ready to analyze realities through a mathematical
evaluation. A fact is certain: both the concrete document and the
imaginary fact „transliterated under the fixed form of the myth have the
right to history and memory.
