The Central
Statistical Library is one of the oldest, largest and most modern
research libraries in Poland.
It holds the largest specialized collection of statistical publications in Poland and
is only second to the
Eurostat
Library in Europe in terms of the size of such a
collection.
The Library is visited by approximately
20.000
users. Its bibliographic and
library bases are used by over
120.000
people via the Internet.
The Central Statistical Library, founded in
1918,
collects scientific and
popularized scientific works in the area of statistics and demography, as well as
social and economic sciences, and librarianship.
The collections contained
60.000
volumes in
1939.
Thanks to the fact that they
had been transferred to the seat of the
Statistisches Amt in Krakow
during
World War II, the unique statistical collection was salvaged
—
an exceptional
event among Warsaw and national libraries.
The Library obtained its own seat in
1953,
a building next to
GUS
(the Main
Statistical Office), designed by Professor
Romuald Gutt.
In
1968,
the Library obtained the status of a central national research library in
the area of: statistics, demography and related areas. By decision of the Ministry
of Culture and National Heritage in
1998,
the Library became a member of the
group of libraries which form the National Library Resources.
The main collections amount to approximately
470.000
volumes (uniform and
continuous printed publications).

The Library holds the richest national collection of Polish and foreign statistical
publications, both current and retrospective (since the beginnings of the
XIX
century). It collects all
GUS
publications, the annuals of statistical offices in the

voivodeships and the statistical annuals of the various countries of the world
and of international institutions, such as the UN, European Union,
OECD.
The CBS collection also includes materials regarding the pre-war activities of
various research institutions and societies, and covers Polish and foreign
theoretical literature regarding statistics and demography.
As of
1998,
the Library has an
OPAC
computer catalogue in the ALEPH
system.
In mid-2006, Internet access has been provided to the digital alphabetical
catalogue, which covers the whole of the Library s principal collections for the
years
1918 - 1998,
and to a catalogue of internal
GUS
publications for the years
1950-1988.
In January
2007,
the CBS implemented the newest version of the ALEPH
integrated conversational library system (version
16.00).
The Central Statistical Library provides on-line access to the whole catalogue of
the Library s collections and information regarding its services at
http:/statlibr.stat.gov.pl.
The CBS website also has a link connection to the
GUS
website at
www.stat.gov.pl.
The Library s principal task for the near future is to form itself into a modern
center, which will participate in the national and international system of
exchange of library and bibliographical information, and into an efficient source
for a broad group of recipients of current and historical statistical information.
This is to be accomplished in close harmonization of cooperation and IT
connections with the Department of Information Access, in particular with the
Central Statistical Information Center of the Main Statistical Office.
