Can an Archaeologist Read Medieval History?
Comments on the Significance of Archaeological Sources
This article looks at the problems related to the treatment and use of archaeo¬
logical materials as real historical sources in the research on the Middle Ages. The
assessment of the situation, conducted for Poland, became a starting point for
defining the relations between archaeology and history and thus the role archaeo¬
logy should perform in contemporary medieval studies.
An essential turning point, which in the practice of archaeology is the appear¬
ance and dissemination of writing in the examined societies, on Polish land took
place in the 10th century . Thus the presented comments refer to archaeology of
the
1
0th
—
IS1 1 centuries. The author provides examples and wonders whether
archaeological sources gained during excavation, after their classification and
internal criticism can be translated into the language of historical meanings in
such a way that they can form a basis for the reconstruction of historical past.
And thus can they be treated as rightful historical sources contributing new infor¬
mation to the research on societies enlightened with written sources, information
unavailable to
sensu striction
historians in their experience and, what is more,
understandable for them? Questions posed in this way are given a positive answer
by the author although he gives a few conditions to be met.
In consequence we have to assume that medieval archaeology or to use a more
extensive term: historical archaeology should be treated as a rightful, independent
discipline, formally divided from history yet related to it by the subject of
research. In the course of research, using methods appropriate to archaeology
and drawing on the experience of such disciplines as cultural anthropology or
ethnology as well as applying some achievements of physics, chemistry and other
sciences, an archaeologist is able to pose new questions which are not taken over
from the heritage of other historical disciplines, yet they are clear and important
for their representatives, construct new hypotheses and proposals of reconstru¬
ctions of medieval phenomena and processes. In contemporary medieval studies
which are making an attempt to write a global history, a history of all dimen¬
sions of human life, the purpose of which is as complete a reconstruction of
medieval culture as possible, complementary application of a variety of sources
seems indispensable.
What is more, one can assume that the significance of archaeological sources
in the research on the Middle Ages will be growing in the future. Here two factors
114

will be decisive. The first one is a consistent and very fast increase of the number
of sources, which is also connected with rescue exca ations conducted on more
and more extensive areas. The other one, which is growing at a more moderate
pace, is the process of methodological maturing of a still young scientific disci¬
pline which is the medieval archaeology.

A Coin as a Universal Source: Material, Written and
Iconographie
The universality of a coin as a historical source results from the fact that it is
a material, written and
iconographie
one at the same time (Kiersnowski
2006).
1.
A coin as a material source which has particular material, weight and diam¬
eter, is one of archaeological sources. Coins are found in soil during excavation
works, similarly to pottery, tools, bones and other artefacts. However in compari¬
son with these findings coins are desired due to their better specification certifi¬
cate . This notion is understood as a set of data which allow to precisely define
the time and place of coin making and the person who made it, i.e. the emitter.
Thanks to this we can use coins as dating evidence of archaeological contexts in
which they were found.
If, however, coin findings (including these which were found accidentally) are
located on a map, one can gain information about the time, the direction and the
intensity of international contacts as well as the course of commercial routes.
2.
Coins are a written source due to legends they carry on themselves. By
nature these legends are very short and thus they cannot compete with annals or
chronicles in terms of extensiveness. They can, however, compete with them in
terms of authenticity and antiquity. For example Polish coins from the turn of the
10th and 11th centuries give us the earliest authentic records of the names of
Boleslav
the Brave
(992-1025)
and his son Mieszko, titles used by them, the name
of the capital centre
(Gniezno)
and even the earliest name of Poland (PRINCES
POLONIE) (Fig.
3-6).
3.
Images placed on coins, regardless of small size, and legends alike were used
by rulers to conduct political manifestations. They attempted to shape the course
of events by means of coins. On the other hand, these coins give the reflection
of events. They also reflect the unpreserved in original power insignia (crowns,
sceptres, orbs, thrones
-
Fig.
11-14, 17),
or armour elements (helmets, shields,
coats of mail (Fig.
15-16).
For art historians, coins are a still underappreciated
source to find out about fine Roman art. The die-cutters were frequently not only
simple craftsmen but also genuine artists (Fig.
19, 21, 25-26).

Some Questions of Animal Use and Meat Consumption in Medieval
Ages from the Perspective of Archaeozoological Research
One of the goals pursued by archaeozoology/zooarcheology is the analysis of
human behaviour in the process of animal world resources management (Graph
Summaries
115
1-3).
Examples of the application of archaeozoological data are known in
medieval studies
(Dembińska
1963, 1975;
Rabęcka-Brykczyńska
1984).
A widely accepted concept for early medieval ages is the dominance of stock
breeding at that time over other areas of animal husbandry, i.e. hunting and fish¬
ing (Graph
4).
Beef and pork were the kinds of meet which in various propor¬
tions were consumed by dwellers of various settlement centres (Graph
5).
With
spatial and demographic development of settlements, changes in the types of
consumed meat were brought about (Graph 6a, b). In
Poznań
and
Gdańsk
fun¬
damental changes took place when town settlements were established, i.e. when
demographic-spatial structures different from town-rural establishments were
formed.
Domestic chicken
(Gallus gallus f.
domestica)
in early medieval ages was the most
important and the most numerous farm bird (Graph
7).
Greylag goose and
domestic goose made just a small percentage of the consumed poultry, only in
modern times the economic significance of its farm form became important
(Graph
8).
Ducks (mainly mallard), similarly, were of decisively lesser importance.
In early medieval falconry, a goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) was used much more fre¬
quently than a falcon.
The quality of the consumed meat depended on the social status of people
(Fig.
1).
The rules of animal slaughter were nearly identical in town centres
(Graph Fig.
9),
they were changed only at the time when location towns func¬
tioned (Graph
10).
According to chronicles, Slavs bred dairy cows and made butter from their
milk. In the light of archaeozoological data the abundance of milk is not so
explicit since Western Slavs cattle was very small, the withers height was about
104
cm. It is estimated that cows gave not more than
600
kg of milk. The increase
of milk production per cow took place only in post-medieval times when cattle
grew taller by about
10
cm on average (Graph
11).
According to archaeoichthyological research fishing belonged to the basic set of
farm activities in lake districts and on the coastline. The herring was a species of
commercial significance and the most important centre of fishing and tradein this
fish was
Kołobrzeg.
Until about the 13th century, the cod was of nearly no impor¬
tance.
The medieval ages were the times when negative consequences of inappro¬
priate human behaviour became visible in water environment, which can be
assumed on the basis of archaeoichthyological research in
Gdańsk
(Graph
12)
where sturgeon share in fishing was decreased in consecutive centuries.
The above presented questions are only an author s choice which resulted from
the interest of the one who is putting these words on paper. The basis for these
considerations were the results obtained thanks to the application of macroscopic
methods. Meanwhile contemporary archaeozoology uses also methods applied in
biomolecular disciplines, e.g.
DNA
mitochondrial analysis (mDNA) of sturgeon,
recently also bream, cattle and aurochs as well as other vertebrates.
These considerations omit the questions of the application of side raw mater¬
ials of animal origin, such as bone, antlers and leather. From the cognitive per¬
spective these questions make a significant research course of early medieval
archaeozoological study.

Medieval
World
of Plants and Plant Food in the Light of Palaeobotanical
Sources
Palaeobotanical research, including analyses of plant microfossils (pollen and
spores) and macrofossils (mainly fruits, seeds and charcoal particles) draws direct¬
ly on archaeological excavations and carries a lot of interesting data allowing for
the recognition of plant function in ancient human economy.
Changes in plant cover, caused by anthropogenic activity in the past, were
characterized based on the newest issue of
isopollen
maps. The areas occupied by
mixed deciduous forests gradually diminished on the turn of eras (before Christ
and the common era). Temporary regeneration of hornbeam forests resulted in
a decrease of settlement intensity during the Migration Period. The progressive
diminish of the area occupied by hornbeam, oak, lime and elm started, it contin¬
ued until forest areas reduction in the medieval ages. Deforestation and plant
cover synanthropization were caused by the increase of areas occupied by herbs
communities growing on arable fields and pastures.
Among the identified cereal macrofossils, dating from medieval time, millet
{Pan¬
icům
miliaceum) was the most frequent one, and bread wheat (Tnticum aestwum s.L), rye
(Secale cereale),
and barley (Hordeum
vulgare)
were very frequent ones. Oat
(Avena sativa)
was quite frequent.
AU
these species were perhaps the most important ones in the
then agriculture (Figs.
1, 2).
Among these very interesting plant species were foxtail
millet
(Setaria
italica)
and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) but any estimation of their
role in the agriculture is very complicated. The contribution of other cultivated
plants (Pisum sativum,
Vida sativa, Vicia Jaba
var.
minor and Lens culinaris) was minor
(Table
1).
Among plants used for oil and fibre production were flax (Linum usitatissi-
mum), hemp
(Cannabis
sativa)
and false flax (Camelina
sativa).
Remnants of vegetable
and spicy plants were very poor but macroremains of fruit trees were present.
Besides the remains of cultivated plants, the remains of plants were available,
they were collected directly from wild sources and were been used as edible plants,
medicinal plants and dyeing plants. Timber gathered from the neighbourhood
was used to build houses, roads, bridges (platforms), wells, means of transport,
domestic appliances, and ritual property. Remains of timber and charcoal found
in objects or at cultural levels are mostly the remnants of fuel timber.

A Picture of Medieval Human Populations on the Area of Poland in the
Light of Historical Anthropology
Human bone remains discovered at archaeological sites carry unique informa¬
tion about life in prehistorical and early historical times of Homo sapiens population.
The research of this type of material has long history, but still only the develop¬
ment of modern, advanced analysis methods allows for better and better cognition
of the existence of individuals and whole human communities in past centuries.
Their confrontation with archaeological and historical sources creates an opportu¬
nity for a credible reconstruction of the way communities functioned in the past.

Nowadays historical anthropology has at its disposal a very rich collection of
skeletons from medieval centuries. On the basis of these
osteologica!
collections,
attempts are made to explain a variety of biological and cultural phenomena.
Contemporary anthropological research is concentrated on the questions of mor¬
phological differentiation and its conditioning as well as health epidemiological
description of disease occurrence (paleopathology, paleoepidemiology). The fre¬
quency of occurrence of the so called stress markers is analysed for medieval po¬
pulations, the influence of living conditions on dying out processes (paleodemog-
raphy) and on the biological development of man and its determinants (paleoaux-
ology and ecology) are examined. Although not as often as it happened in the first
half of and at the beginning of the 20th century, anthropologists return to the
matter of the subject of the ethnogenesis of Slavs. Completely new, dynamically
developing disciplines concerning the man in the past are paleogenetics and pale-
obiochemistry, they examine extinct populations at the molecular level.
Although historical anthropology is an independent discipline, since its begin¬
nings based on the ground of biological sciences, it willingly draws on the exper¬
ience of humanities such as prehistory, archaeology, history, archive studies, eth¬
nology and ethnography. Unfortunately the reverse flow of thought, ideas,
attempts to interpret phenomena and assumptions, i.e. from sciences in the direc¬
tion of humanities, hardly ever happens. It seems that only on the condition of
close co-operation between the two spheres, a reliable and credible description of
the past human population as a complete biocultural system is possible. The use
of the results of the analyses of sources Obtained from soil , including human
remains, may allow the representatives of historical sciences to obtain a complete¬
ly new quality in research on early historical human communities.
