Zusammenfassung:Combining autobiographical elements with the experiences of his uncle, this is Kazan's most personal film, his vision of the impossibility of the American dream. It tells of the struggles of a young man, Stavros, to raise the money to make the journey from Anatolia to the United States and then to find the means to bring the rest of his extended family after him. Stavros is one of the Greek subject peoples suffering under Turkish rule. His dream of freedom in America involves a psychological as well as a physical flight from oppression. But family ties continue to be asserted within him. Kazan sought a non-romantic 'documentary' style and for the first time used a predominantly non-professional cast.
