jketches on the history of vocal art in Lviv has been written by two authors
- Teresa
Mazepa
and
Leszek Mazepa.
Both authors have been interested
in vocal pedagogy and have been doing research in the developement of mu¬
sical culture in Lviv for many years. Their scientific fascinations are connec¬
ted with Adam Didur (a great singer and artist), and with the history of one
of the oldest and most influential theatres in Eastern Europe in Lviv (founded
in
1776).
The history of this theatre and cultural life of Lviv inspired the au¬
thors to continue their research in the area of vocal art and performance, and
to analyse the artistic and pedagogical activity of Walery Wysocki
-
one of
the greatest Polish vocal teachers.
The main idea of the book Sketches on history of a vocal art in Lviv was
not only to show the spectacular pedagogical success of Wysocki, but also to
show the influence of the Lviv Theatre on vocal pedagogy, and on fuither de¬
velopment of vocal art and perfomance from
1939
to present.
The work describes general tendencies, art and pedagogical success, as
well as the cultural heritage of Lviv, which is a city of many cultures and reli¬
gions with a beautiful but complicated history. It contains chapters which de¬
scribe the development of vocal education and vocal schools in the
époque
of
the Austrian
Galicia,
and before, during, and after the two World Wars. The¬
re is also a description of music theatre activity- opera and operetta
-
which
was constantly evolving due to local and guest artists and high-leveled vocal
education.

and vocal schools which were founded by F.X.W. Mozart and the Saint Ce¬
cily Institute of Singing Association in

changed into the Polish Association) and by the Lviv Conserva¬
tory of Music
(1853).
