BULGARIA AND THE BULGARIANS
Summary
This monograph discusses the relations of Lev Davidovich Trotsky, the dis¬
tinguished activist of the Russian socialist, and later on, communist movement with the
Bulgarian socialist movement and its activists, and more specifically Trotsky's relation¬
ships until
1917
with
D. Blagoev, V. Kolárov, G.
Dimitrov,
Y. Sakazov
and especially
with
K. Rakovski,
as well as Trotsky's contacts with the Bulgarian communists during
the time when he became one of the leaders of Soviet Russia and later on became in¬
volved in the intensive fight against the increasing autocracy of Y. V. Stalin by setting up
opposition groups. The book devotes significant attention to Trotsky's contacts in the
1930's with his Bulgarian supporters and especially with S. Manov and D. Ganchev.
The first chapter examines Trotsky's attempt to contribute to the restoration of the
unity of the Bulgarian socialist movement through uniting the "narrow" and "broad"
socialists, an activity which had been performed by Krustyo Rakovski in collaboration
and in agreement with Trotsky. Trotsky's visit in Bulgaria as a correspondent to the Kiev
Thought newspaper and his assessment of the First and the Second Balkan Wars, Bulgaria's
place in these wars, the Macedonia question and the activity of the Internal Macedonia-
Ordin Revolutionary Organization are presented as well.
The second chapter devotes attention to the collaborative activity in
1926-1927
between Trotsky and the Bulgarian emigrants to the USSR, such as K. Rakovski, G.
Andreichin and the others included in the united anti-Stalin opposition, who were all exiled
in
1917
after their expulsion from the Ail-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks), as well as
the activity in
1928
when Trotsky himself was exiled from the USSR. A significant atten¬
tion is also devoted to the K. Rakovski's assistance in the publication of the Bulletin of the
Opposition (of Bolsheviks and Leninists) issued under the direction of Trotsky.
The third chapter discusses the establishment in 1930's in Bulgaria of the group of
supporters of Trotsky and founding of the Secretariat of the international communist
opposition together with this group; the communication and personal contacts with this
group, the advices and recommendations which this group and its members had re¬
ceived from the 4th International, which was in a process of formation at the time; the
differences in opinion within this group and its conflicts with the Bulgarian Communist
Party, which has caused its dissolution.
The book is based on documents filed at Bulgarian, US and Russian archives, most
of which are being disclosed to the scientific society for the first time. Among all archived
sources the documentation of Trotsky's personal archives stored at the Harvard Univer¬
sity in the USA has been of extreme importance. The book also includes official docu¬
ments, publications, published documentation and memories of Trotsky's supporters
and political opponents.
The paper is addressed to historians, political scientists, sociologists, students in
the humanities and all who exhibit an interest in the history of Bulgaria of the 20th cen¬
tury, the history of Russia as well as in the international workers and socialist movement.
