SETS OVER OF TOOLS AND RAW MATERIAL
FROM CATACOMB BURIALS OF UKRAINE
Technical progress in the Catacomb society can be illustrated
not only by the developed metallurgy and metal working but
also by specialization of labour activity on making of missile
weapon, first of all arrows, by the appearance in the funeral
ritual of working tools for production arrow sets and various raw ma¬
terial. Compatible horn and bronze pressure flaking tools (retouchers),
leaves shells, used for a moisturizing of flakes and half-finished prod¬
ucts, series of small stone anvils and hammer-stones, chamfer sand¬
stone abrasives for shafts grinding, complexes of flint instruments and
standardization of the finished high-quality products

all these features describe the developing of variety of tools
and skills, and forward process in invention of special equipment for
special types of labour activity, and can be used for the bright evident
for wide division and specialization of technical receptions in the area
of the communal production. Within the limits of the Donets and Ingul
Catacomb society the similar specialization of working types, based
on the division of labor, provided a real basis for the beginning proc¬
ess of separation from the cattle breeding economy of the manufactur¬
ing, forming of that production base which formed earlyclass society
and became the basement of the Civilization.
On the certain stage of the Catacomb tribes evolution an appear¬
ance of property inequality is inevitable and all rights of using public
property begin to concentrate in the hands of higher classes represen¬
tatives. At the same time with the system of appeal of life-support
products there was the special system of prestige gifting, which begin
to perform ceremonial meaning: the more material values person indi¬
vidually used, the more influence he had and more important in the
society he was. The process of claiming the property relations in the
Catacomb s society was presenting in the burials of the nobility by the
weapon and prestige arrow sets.
In a chronological aspect, appearance and spreading of produc¬
tion of arrows making complexes are correlated with the developed
stage of the Donets and Ingul Catacomb cultures. The basis of their
forming lies in a previous the Late Yamna epoch. Tradition of placing
such sets in burials exists during all time of the Late Catacomb period
and lives until the end of the Final Catacomb period, marked by early
antiquities of the Mnogovalikova Culture period (or by the Early
Babino
materials). In a wide meaning, this circumstance sets excep¬
tional belonging of all arrow production tools sets of Middle Bronze
Epoch to the Catacomb culture and makes them one of the leading
Catacomb Cultural signs. In the Final Catacomb burials on territories
of former residence of the Donets and Ingul Catacomb population
some «reduced» Catacomb tools sets made from chamfer sandstone
abrasives, shells, poor flint raw material episodically appeared.
Saving a complete cultural tradition in the instruments from the
Catacomb Culture, the Final Catacomb arrows production complexes
represent separation of instruments, scarcity of compositions and dy¬
ing of the Catacomb tradition placing specialized tool sets with the
dead people.
As a result the Donets and Ingul Catacomb graves with the sets
of tools, half-made products and raw material for producing arrows
and flint arrow points, included various composition of wares used on
the different stages of processing shaft weapon. Their specific compo-
sition
indicates specialized hand production with compound technolo¬
gies. The production activity of arrow-makers was mainly prestigious,
so arrow-production sets in the graves received a sacral meaning and
importance associated with armory and military art, martial spirit,
dominant influence and totally with wield power.
