Any book about marriage in Jane Austen s
time is sure to feature contradictions and
complexities and this one is no exception.
These were years of great change and
great resistance to change, occasioning a
state of flux in that trickiest of personal
relationships, marriage. The marital
histories of Jane Austens brothers and
sisters-in-law, her neighbours, friends and
acquaintances, provided the author with
an authentic backdrop against which her
fictional characters make their assessments
and choices.
