MAKING OF PERIODIZATIONAL AND CULTURAL
AND CHRONOLOGICAL SCHEMES: HISTORICAL EXPERIENCE
AND MODERN CONCEPTION OF STUDY OF ANCIENT
AND MEDIEVAL NATIONS OF ALTAY
The task of cultural and chronological schemes making is set before re¬
searches of regions of Eurasia. It is based on the study of different sources and
fixed historical processes that reflex objective regularity. Such a task is actually
modem for territories where nations existed that did not have writing and rec¬
reation of past times is mainly based on archaeological materials. Besides, there
are attempts to make numerous materials into a whole on a higher level of world
history structure comprehension. It is important to take into account the experi¬
ence of such predecessors for more effective solving of modern problems of the
given theme.
However, there are many questions about place and time of one or an¬
other historical event in rather a generalized and linear system. The present ex¬
perience of historical periodizations is mainly based on
centrism
of Europe that
is a one-sided approach and it makes it difficult to perceive events and proc¬
esses of societies development in other parts of the world. Cultures that did not
have writing are the weakest in the context. The author suggests the way of such
practice overcoming through a step-by-step realization of the present data gen¬
eralizations and making of cultural and chronological schemes synchronized
with historical indicators. Such schemes would give an opportunity to solve
difficult problems of Eurasian history scheme of organization. Solving of this
problem demands much time and force. The problem cannot be solved in the
very near future, but the work is in the process in many regions and there are
material results. It is important to understand the already formed ways of the
past dividing into definite cultural and chronological pieces.
The author adhered to the next system correspondence when making the
cultural and chronological scheme of the Altay study, epoch, period, time, cul¬
ture, stage. Epochs (antiquity and the Middle Ages) reflex the highest level of
generalization and perception the known numerous data. They include rather
significant in time and content periods (early, developed and late antiquity;
early, developed and late Middle Ages) in the frames of which cultural and
chronological pieces appeared and were named by the known ethnic or agreed
(according to significant sites) sign: Early Scythian (Early Saks or Arzhan-
Mayemir) time, pazyryk, Khunn-Syanbiisk-Zhuzhansk («Gunn-Sarmat»),
Turks, Kyrgyz and Mongolian times. There are stages in each archaeological
culture singled out for Altay. Such an approach is one of traditional forms of
modern historical mentality. It demonstrates the different stages of the fixed
event (the process of formation, forming, growth, modification, transformation

and decay) that reflex the content of any objective periodization. When stating
the data there were used close in meaning terms and concepts borrowed from
other schemes and conceptions. Let us bring everything into line for more con¬
crete understanding of the situation: epoch of late antiquity

showed no contradictions in the formed and used meanings.
The «triple» principle was not strictly adhered to in the given cultural
and chronological scheme. Not every singled out community had representative
data and historical development of cultures shows variety of changes reasons
and existence forms. However, we agree that triple structure is the basic pro¬
found core of any periodization especially in the very beginning of comprehen¬
sion stages of sufficient knowledge because «...every phenomenon has its be¬
ginning (period of appearance or forming), period of growth (time of the highest
concentration of its peculiarities) and the end (period of dispersing or decay or,
on the contrary, period of the last elevation of «creative powen> bearers of cul¬
tural tradition») (Savinov,
2005,
p.
28).
An attempt of making a comprehensive cultural and chronological con¬
ception for the study of Altay nations history during
2200
years was undertaken
for the first time in the monograph. Existence of different sources about the
given periods and numerous unsolved problems of private character left its
mark upon formulations of a common character. The got results make stable
basis for the further data systematization and researches intensification.
Great experience of periodization schemes making was thoroughly ana¬
lyzed for the realization of the planned goal. Many generations of foreign re¬
searches and researches of our country worked at methodological, pragmatic
and other approaches to the mankind history structure. Consideration of such
data and system of making of cultural and chronological schemes in archae¬
ology gave an opportunity for modern survey of questions of terms order and
their relations. As the result, there formed rather a logical and understandable
chain of common, private and individual designations of historical process that
reflex characteristics of chronological frames based on traditional Eurasian sys¬
tem (Antiquity, the Middle Age, New, Modern time) and on classical scheme of
«three ages».
Generalization of accumulated data of all marked periods was made
upon the worked out methodic and methodological approaches. As the result of
system order principal the next scheme of staged development of the marked
cultures of Altay took shape was briefly characterized.

The typological method was the basic approach while realizing re¬
searches complex. It was directed to complexes dividing and their classifying
with the help of generalized model. This method is traditionally used in archae¬
ology with the purpose of comparative study as separate categories of subjects,
buildings and things and their totality. It especially concerns the development of
concrete types of goods in time and space. Connections, functions, relations and
level of objects organization were revealed during the work. The realized ap¬
proach gave an opportunity to reveal the regularity of cultural development of
nomadic cattle-breeding communities. Chronology of the material complex was
defined with the help of a wide range of analogies a part of which was dated
radio-carbonic and dendro-chronological methods. It is necessary to mark usage
of synchronization for establishing the chronological correspondence of the
singled out stages with the dated historical events and processes. Work on the
results gathering is represented in the book appendix. The gathering was made
in different laboratories of radio-carbonic analysis of samples that were taken
from the sites of Altay. A part of precised data was got with the help of special
program worked out in the laboratory of Washington University. Author s
elaborations are accumulated in the book. They found their reflection in numer¬
ous articles, monographs, dissertations and teaching aids.
