Instructional-Design Theories and Models, Volume III: Building a Common Knowledge Base is perhaps best described by its
new subtitle. Whereas Volume II took on the daunting task of comprehensively reviewing the proliferating theories and models
of instruction that characterized the 1980’s and 1990’s. Volume III has taken on an even more daunting task: starting to build
a common knowledge base that underlies and supports the vast array of instructional theories, models, and strategies that
together constitute the field of Instructional Design. Just as Volume II was hailed as a classic text following its publication in
1999, Volume III is destined to become an even more recognized classic over the coming decade. An overview of its contents
follows:
Unit I describes the need for a common knowledge base, offers common terminology and definitions of key concepts,
and then offers some universal principles of instruction derived from an analysis of many instructional theories. The unit
concludes by addressing the need for variation and more detailed guidance when implementing the universal principles
within different situations.
Unit II describes how the universal principles apply to some major approaches to instruction and how situational principles
and methods of instruction can be found within any given approach. The approaches included are: direct instruction,
discussion/dialogue-based instruction, experiential/exploratory instruction, problem-based instruction, and simulation/
microworld-based instruction.
Unit III describes how to appiy the universal principles to instruction for some of the major types of learning and how
situational principles and methods of instruction can typically be found within instruction for any given type of learning. The
kinds of learning included are: understandings, skills, affective development, and integrated learning.
Unit IV provides a deeper understanding of instructional theory using the structural layers of a house as its metaphor. Then
it applies design principles to: 1) map the domain knowledge needed for learner-centered instruction, and 2) create and
use learning objects. The unit describes methods for building instructional theories and concludes with a discussion of
instructional theory in the broader context of paradigm change in education in relation to the book’s major themes.
Unit Forewords introduce the chapters in each unit and tie them together, while chapter forewords provide a concise
summary or outline of the main ideas in each chapter.
Editor’s Notes compare ideas across chapters and highlight major concepts and themes that appear within each chapter. |
