THESEVENTAULANTKINGS
First
of all I would like to emphasize that this book
takes in an historical and archeological analysis, the most
ancient events of the area inhabited from the
ilir
tribe of
Taulants. In the big territorial space that this tribe occupied,
I will specify the first protohistorical location of the gulf
of
Dürres
or its harbor. Exactly here begins the history of
the first
ilir
kings of this harbor, Dyrrahu and Epidamni,
that give it the name becoming its eponym. In continuance
I will introduce in a chronological way, the history of this
city during six centuries consecutively and specifically
centuries VII-II.B.C, among five other
ilir
kings. This part
of ancient history is the most interesting, but also the most
difficult to be constructed. We should point out that for
protourban phase, a big support or written sources, both in
the form of legends or protohistorical archeological
findings. In continuance from the centuries
VII-
VI
B.C,
until
the century II B.C, dominates archeological material mainly
from antique necropolis. Interpretation of this last one will
be made on the frame of the five taulant kings from Galauri
up to
Mýtili.
It is obviously, this topic can not be easily
exploited because every new archeological discovery, takes
forward in centuries the scientific thought. About
Dürres
is written a lot, but two documentary values remain
irreplaceable and those are: Written sources of antique
Shtatë Mbretërit Taulantë

authors and discoveries and editions of foreign archeologist
(
centuries JOX-XX).
In spite of this, archeology was put on scientific bases
only with the excavation and studies of Albanian
archeologist, especially during the last
60
years. They have
highlighted many problems of the ancient history of the
area of the Southern Iliria. It is not possible to be mentioned
here, but the contribution of the previous generations, is
ä
fundamental stone on which is raised above the protective
wall of history. About
Dürres
is to be mentonied the
contribution of

honored Albanian archeologists of the
first generation, namely the professors: Hasan
Ceka,
Skender
Anamali,
Selim Islami,
and Vangjel
Toçi,
who with
their discoveries and their studies, put on scientific bases
Albanian archeology. They have highlighted the place and
the role of ilirs, high levels of the development that they
achieved from the beginning of life in the area of the
Southern Iliria where an important role played the city of
Dürres
consecutively by means of the culture and city life
they proved with scientific arguments, levels of the
economical-political and contemporary organization, also
the state administration capacity.
Based on the
tumular
discoveries of the graves and in
the
ilir
cities, our scientists observed the presence of
autochthones population in centuries without interruption
that lived during all historical stages with the contemporary
intermediterranean vitality. As in eveiy field of science
furthermore in archeology the thought evolves. Already has
arrived the time of the review of some sayings in connection
with the time of the city foundation, names it held, which

was the first, what do they represent and the role of the

I will start exactly the history of
Dürres in
the end of
the IX century and during the century
VIII
B.C, as a
continuance of locations or movements of the populations
from the eastern coasts to western coasts of
Adriatik.
An important material support are archeological
findings, especially of those from
Dürres
where I also take
place with the
30
years old discoveries
( 1972-2002),
made
in the antique necropolis, also within the city, dated century
vn-iB.c.

The history of the kings of the
ilir
tribe of Taulants the
same as those of other tribes of the Southern Iliria is of
many centuries. It is written a lot about them and their
different problems, where an important place takes antique
Dyrrahu too.In this study, based on a new interpretation of
the discoveries in the city of
Dürres,
seen in the light of
the last editions, within and out of the country, I am
introducing in a chronological way the
ilir
kings in the region
of Taulant from the centuries VII-I B.C. It is not easy to
understand the beginning of the life of this region. The
support in some
specific
geographic, topographic and
géomorphologie
conditions that can be observed even today,
have remained unchangeable from the beginning of the first
habitats. The existence of the harbor of Dyrrah gave it a
