Antónia
Gertrudes Pusich was born on October
1, 1805,
on the
island of Sao
Nicolau,
Cabo
Verde, where her father,
Antun Pušić (b.
1760,
Dubrovnik
—
d.
1838,
Lisbon), was chief naval
intendant.
It was
to him that she owed her many accomplishments: she mastered several
foreign languages (French, English and Italian in particular) and was a
gifted pianist and composer. The happy days of
Antónia s
girlhood
ended when her family had to move to Portugal in
1821.
Political fer¬
ment and the ensuing civil war shaped Antonia a whole life and work.
Equally significant for her personal development were her three mar¬
riages, from which the Portuguese
Pušićs
are descended. She died in
Lisbon, on October
5,1883.
Much has been written about
Antónia s
eventful life as poetess,
playwright, musician (pianist and composer), literary, theatre, music
and art critic, journalist, editor, educationist, theologist, anthropologist,
ethnologist, social and charity worker, campaigner for the women s
rights, etc. The fact that she had earned the status of a professional
writer
—
the only woman author in a patriarchal society such as that of
nineteenth-century Portugal
—
was of considerable influence on her
work. She was often forced to sacrifice her aesthetic aspirations for
lighter and more trivial forms in order to afford her daily needs (hence
a large body of occasional verse). Notwithstanding, some of her lyrics
are valuable literary works.

Pusich strove to employ her erudi¬
tion for the improvement of the society she lived in, as best witnessed
in her first political and literary contributions which, beginning with
1841,
she started to publish in a number of Lusitanian newspapers and
journals, but equally so in her numerous lectures and other public
addresses.

literary heritage consists of about

books, three journals of which she was the publisher and editor, as well as
a series of literary texts (verse mainly) dispersed in various anthologies,

collections
and literary magazines. However, her musical opus consist¬
ing of the piano and short orchestral compositions has not survived.
Given her literary work on the whole, one should emphasize that
she was essentially a lyricist, her literary prose, dramatic works, essays
and even scientific texts being permeated with inherent poetic sensi¬
bility. All her literary texts tend to convey a specific moral. Baroque
overtones interfere with the Romantic disposition of many of
Antonia
Pusich s works. Having blended the elements of the Baroque heritage
and Romanticism, her literary work departs from the mainstream of the
Portuguese and lusophonic Romantic movement. Her strong commit¬
ment to the utilitarian dimension of literature and art (moral aspect in
particular) often overshadowed the aesthetic meaning of the work
itself. This, however, does not imply that she ignored certain

tenets, as the cult of form, for example. She merely awarded them
a place in the background, the focus being reserved for higher moral
goals. The cult of form, for which she, as a poet, took particular inter¬
est in, was concieved to lure the reader to the morally imbued contents
or message. Apart from obsessive moralizing,

Pusich s poetry,
drama and prose is deeply autobiographic. Although employment of
elements from author s life was a characteristic of Romanticism, she
used them to such an extent that some of her works are to be read as
diaries. This cannot be attributed to a cult of egotism witnessed with
many writers of the period, but rather to her urge to share the wealth of
her experience with the readership. The brutal civil war between the
royalists and liberals deeply penetrated

private and pro¬
fessional life. Her writing is influenced by the horrors of what she con¬
demns as the worst of all evils , considering it the source of all evil for
man and nation alike.
Antonia
Pusich s career as journalist and editor was much the same
as that of a writer. She is rightfully considered a legend of lusophonic
journalism. The reason for this should primarily be sought in the fact
that she was the first openly declared female journalist not only in Por¬
tugal but in all of the Portuguese-speaking countries. The cultural his¬
tory of Portugal acknowledges

Gertrudes Pusich as the first
woman to sign a literary text under her real name, an act later

acclaimed, though reluctantly, by the feminist movement. Moreover,
her place in the history of Portuguese journalism was earned by the
publishing and editing of the magazines

A Cruzada.
As journalist and editor she insisted on
complete independence and non-interference from the outside. In addi¬
tion, she never failed to boldly state her uncompromising views, com¬
menting on the problem as a journalist, writer and editor. She remained
loyal to her opinions even if they dissented from those of the contribu¬
tors. This, however, does not mean that she disrespected the views,
political or other, of others. Quite the contrary. Her editorial tolerance
was best displayed by publishing contributions expressing completely
different opinions from her own, yet never to the harm of her trenchant
views. Deep involvement in current issues was a hallmark of her jour¬
nalistic approach, especially those pertaining to public morals, religion,
patriotism, social injustice, upbringing and education (promotion of lit¬
eracy) and inferior position of women that stirred her legendary jour¬
nalistic temperament.
As a pedagogue, she promoted compulsory elementary education
which would be free for all poor students, and in which teachers could
earn a living befitting this noble profession.
As for her rather obscure political engagement, one should point to
the fact that in her journalistic and editorial work she was guided by
non-involvement in the daily party politics, a guideline to which she
remained faithful throughout her career, but as a common citizen she
was steeped in politics. She devoted herself with vigour and determi¬
nation to the struggle for social justice, but also charity work, the aim
of which, in her opinion, was to provide welfare, that being the domain
of politics. She viewed politicians as some sort of social workers ,
responsible for the welfare of the nation on the whole.
Antónia
Pusich s feminist role draws particular attention. In many
of her texts she expresses great concern over the backward-oriented
forces aimed at keeping Portuguese women in ignorance so that men
could retain their privileged social position. She criticizes state insti¬
tutions for not providing women with equal educational opportunities
as men; men s ignorance of women s existential problems (an issue

deliberately ignored by male press) or the fact that women were
deprived of the right to work and appraisal, their reputation being also
devalued in favour of men. These texts testify to

strong feminist committment not for its own sake but as a means of cre¬
ating a vision of a man who cannot achieve his happiness unless his
female half has come to her fullness as well. It is to this goal that
