(Summary)
In the work are published the results of the archeological excava¬
tions carried out on the Hill of Trapezitza in the XIX-XX cc. which are
still unknown for a large number of specialists. A new and significant
part of them are author s investigations, connected with the fortress
walls, gateways and towers, as well as the residential quarters situated
around them. Although in their beginning, the investigations give us
a valuable information about this important fortress of the capital, its
stratigraphy, fortification system, civil architecture and communica¬
tions. It is not the complete history of Trapezitsa Hill, because it is based
mainly on the finds of the archeological excavations which continue, it
presents and gathers together all known so far that makes it a basis for
the future investigations.
Trapezitsa is connected mainly with the period when the capital of
the country was Turnovo
(1185-1393).
Then it was one of the principal
fortresses of the inner town, which included also th Hill of Tzarevets
(Turnov)
and the Maiden s fortress (Devingrad). Fortified with high
stone walls and towers in the 1st half of the 13th century Trapezitsa con¬
tinued to exist as such to the end of the 14th

when it was abandoned
by most of the inhabitants as a result of the changed socio-political
conditions after the Bulgaria s conquest by the Turks.
The new archeological excavations of
1992-1997
unearthed parts
of densely built residential quarters and street communications which
don t differ much from these built on Tzarevets Hill during the

We did not find any traces of intentional destruction or fire after the
town s conquest in
1393.
This was also confirmed by the churches discov¬
ered in the fortress. All this points to the fact of mass abandance of the
quarters along the fortress walls after which the buildings were deserted
and gradually destroyed by the time and the powers of nature.

Most of the discovered churches are single-aisled which in the
limited space of the fortress were very suitable for district, monastic
or family churches. Dedicated to different male and female saints they
are in the traditional scheme: single-aisled, with rectangular or square
nave, with a single apse to the east, with one and rarely two narthexes
in which there are shallow graves or crypts.
These churches represent the newest shapes and types of buildings
in which we can see different influences. Experimented are new build¬
ing decisions and techniques. Such are the churches with tight cross,
the two-storied churches-crypts, those with elongated nave which is not
covered with a separate vault, the tetrahedral belfry above the narthex,
the ceramic-plastic decoration, etc.

of the churches there are remains of mural paintings and in
one mosaic decoration which can be seen now only in the copies and
the drawings made by V. Dimov. In themes, iconography and style the
murals from Trapezitsa Hill bear the marks of the official court art de¬
veloped in the Turnovo art school. However without the Boyana church
it would be impossible to get an idea about their decorative system,
iconography and decorative style of ornamentation which covered
their walls long ago.
During the archeological excavations near the fortress walls and
the quarters along them were found a great number of coins unknown
till now. They are similar to those discovered on Tzarevets which shows
that the fortress on Trapezitsa Hill was constructed and developed at
the same time with the other districts of the capital. All this confirms
the historical and archeological conclusions.
