Summary
The intelligentsia and culture. Self-identification problems
of the 19th-century Russian intelligentsia
In the
li? 1
century, Russian culture was developing in the rhythm of challenge
-
response, and
the intelligentsia defined the directions of its evolution. Contrary to Western intellectuals, the Russian
intelligentsia was a specific group of people, formed as a result of a cultural confrontation. It had
a mediating role, both on the border of two cultural systems, and locally
-
between these elements
which required re-defining due to the civilization clash. The specificity of the intelligentsia, the func¬
tions and problems the group had to face, owed its uniqueness to the fact of mediation.
The research on the mutual relations of the intelligentsia and culture defines three confrontation
phases and challenges corresponding to them. The category of the social-psychological type consti¬
tutes a helpful research tool. The thesis also takes into account the notion of self-centric orientation,
characteristic of Western Europe, and system-centric one, dominant in Russia.
The 19th-century Russian culture is the culture of dissonance. Its characteristic feature is the co¬
existence of pairs of opposite features, their constant confrontation, the lack of an axiologically neu¬
tral sphere, and rapid change from one development period into another. Intelligentsia generations
and groupings reflect these immanent features
ornative
culture. The first chapter distinguishes several
development phases defined by the following factors: gradual secularization (the beginning of the 19th
century), attempts at creating central culture against the background of two polarized tendencies
—
slavophilism and occidentalism (the 1840 s), utilitarianisation and vulgarisation of culture (the
1860 s), a turn towards spiritual values and aiming at the synthesis of art, philosophy, and society (the
turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries), politicisation of culture after the Bolshevik revolution
(1917).
The second chapter defines time boundaries of the three confrontation phases. Each phase was of
a different character. Together, they constituted the chain of challenges and responses by means of
defining confrontation principles, aiming at self-identification, the loss of creative potential and dis¬
integration.
At the time of decembrists, the classic complex of the intelligentsia problems was formulated.
What is more, basic challenges for future generations and groupings were defined, hence the idea to
call this generation the first one. A question about the attitude to europeisation and autocracy goes
along the issue of freedom for serfs, and the belief of the intelligentsia in a debt towards the lower
classes of society.
The second confrontation phase encompasses the following: slavophilism, occidentalism, Baku-
nin s anarchy, and Hercen s socialism. The complementary character of formulated ideas is striking.
In the
ШСѕЧббОЧ
people discussed two models of society
-
collectivist and individualistic one,
and the role of an individual. Answers to questions-challenges posed by the Decembrist movement
were formulated. The variety of suggested solutions made it possible to state that both the intelligent¬
sia and culture were undergoing the process of development.
In the third confrontation phase, there was a transition from theoretical ideas to action. However,
activities initiated by the intelligentsia had a destructive influence on basic culture elements. The
attitude towards the state changed. The attempt of mediation was not considered sufficient any more.
Instead, the idea of the revolutionary transformation of the social-political order was promoted. The
traditional community model
-
obszczina
-
was subject to devaluation. The intelligentsia did not

suggest new values of an
autotelic
character, replacing the traditional ones. As a result, relativization
and the weakening of human axiological structure led to the loss of creative potential. The intelligent¬
sia shattered into several antagonizing groupings that did not talk to each other.
Over the period of the whole 19th century, the attitude of the intelligentsia towards the lower
classes of society was ambivalent. In the second half of the century, the desire to serve the interest of
the poorest turned into an obsession. At the same time, the lower society classes were treated subjec¬
tively
-
as a means to the realization of the intelligentsia s goal
-
self-identification.
The third chapter presents the description of social-psychological types of an intellectual. The
decembrist
was a type with a strong tendency towards individualization. It was a completely new
type against the background of Russian culture; a combination of mentality features of the Russian
nobility and Western culture influences. Psychological predisposition had an impact on the shape of
moral and ethical attitudes, different from traditional ones. That type, who was the combination of
emotions and newly-formulated moral-ethical attitudes, generated ideas of a social-political character.
A Slavophil emerged in the 1830 s
—
1840 s. He embodied the features of the native nobility,
who, while confronting the West, decided to save their native characteristics, and, at the same time,
adopt foreign cultural elements. That type defined himself via the process of criticism of individual¬
ism and rationalization of social relationships. His main features were: a tendency to think in the
categories of us, totality of his world view, and the withdrawal to the inner world interpreted as
finding the centre
-
the inner truth.
The superfluous man existed on the border of the patriarchal world and the reality of individu¬
als. He was a stranger to Russian reality for two reasons: the excess of intellectual potential and the
lack of an opportunity to act. He introduced the moral-cultural sphere with entirely new elements,
such as new, individualist understanding of freedom, which resulted in reality rejecting him. He was
a personality type without clearly defined identity and he tried to self-identify himself through West¬
ern values.
The nihilist type included: an apologizing nobleman, a revolutionist
-
nihilist, a devil.
The characteristic feature of each version was the increase of damaging tendencies and feelings
accompanying them. Emotions lied at the source of the nihilist s activity were emotions rationally
justified by external factors. This type emerged in the 1860 s, and its representatives derived to
a large extent from
raznoczyńcy.
Belonging to the group, in a certain sense, devoid of heritage and
forced to create its own ethos based on insufficiently defined values evoked resentment. The social-
psychological nihilist type possessed the following distinctive features: the cult of utility replacing
the ideals of beauty, and the desire to destroy. The feeling of injustice gave the nihilist the strength
to act.
The fourth chapter relates to the problem of credibility of ideals cherished by the Russian intelli¬
gentsia and poses the question about the source of discrepancy between the world of noble pursuits
and real activity. The chapter describes the attitude of the intelligentsia towards the Orthodox Church,
perceiving it as a structure ordering social life. The other problem relates to quasi-religious concepts
-
utopias
explaining and ordering reality, at the same time drawing from extra-religious sources. Falsi¬
fying of consciousness affected among all, Fyodor Dostoyevsky

the author of one of the most pow¬
erful
utopias
about the Russian people
-
and Lev Tolstoy, who, taking into account national negation
and universal cultural bases, could be found dangerously close to socialist, revolutionary conscious¬
ness.
In the fifth chapter the reader s attention is drawn to the fact that defining the mission towards the
West was a side effect of identity search. That is how the Russian intelligentsia tried to compensate
for its inferiority complex. There are two main stages of culture development and the evolution of the
intelligentsia s attitudes towards the West: the first one
-
identification of basic native and foreign
culture elements, and the second one
-
a turn towards the native elements: a sense of community and
the re-interpreted Orthodox Church. The idea of the Orthodox Church was used by Slavophils and the
continuators of their thought to sanctify the Russian people, the force that had been building the
power of that state-empire for centuries. The tsar and the Orthodox Church were united in a specifi-

cally Russian understanding of the mission. Europe as the source of the self-centered vision of
a human being was severely criticized. The early collapse of the Western culture was announced by
all Russian philosophers, with no exception. Doubts about Europe constituted the basis of the mission
of Russia and the intelligentsia.
The sixth chapter includes the summary of the cultural confrontation and the evaluation of the in¬
telligentsia. The revolution of
1905
and the insurrection of
1917
were interpreted as the proof of
Western culture elements diversification against the Russian background: communism, as an ideology
which was in opposition to capitalism, replaced religious ideals. The revolutionist-atheist adapted the
Western idea to the native environment, the idea being enriched with his own religious longing,
strengthened with uncontrollability and desire for totality and maximalism.
The intelligentsia did not manage to find the solution to the problem of the discrepancy between
the character of the state-empire and the interest of an individual. The spiritual powers of the intelli¬
gentsia were first directed against the state in the name of freedom of an individual, and then against
the very individual in the name of the abstractly comprehended Russian People.
A new stage in the history of the intelligentsia was defined by its degradation to the role of a party
instrument. The party dictatorship replaced the creative confrontation of ideas. Hostility towards any
indication of individual desires was the sign of a deeper cultural process of an anthropological char¬
acter. The process of cultural self-identification was put to a halt, as it is of an individual character
and expresses itself in the desire for self-knowledge and self-articulation. The final answer to the
challenge of Western culture resulted in the intelligentsia blending in with state structures and bore
the fruit of anthropological degeneration. There was an experiment conducted to create a new man
- homo sovieticus.
The characteristics of the classical model of an intellectual against the challenge
-
response
rhythm points to the fact that it was a dynamic one. It kept evolving along with changing confronta¬
tion phases and new challenges. Among distinctive features of the Russian intellectual, present in
each phase of the confrontation, one has to mention, above all, the desire for self-identification. In
a natural way, it regulated the activity of the intelligentsia in the field of culture. The next feature was
the belief in the mission and its realization. The other features were: serving the Russian people and,
at the same time, treating that class of society subjectively, opposition to the government, and maxi¬
malism
-
also ethical one, expressing itself in the desire for changes of a complete character.
