This introduces the reader to Wordsorth s epic poem and outlines the main aims
and objectives of the Guide. It summarises the methodology of the book and
provides an overview of its treatment in subsequent chapters of the major debates
in Wordsworth criticism and scholarship.

In the Cathedral Ruins: The Prelude from Conception to Criticism
This chapter provides an overview of the complex textual history of The Prelude,
before charting the responses of mid and late-Victorian critics following the
poem s publication in
1850.
It includes commentary and criticism from the Eclectic
Review, Tait s Edinburgh Magazine, Gentleman s Magazine, British Quarterly
Review, Dublin University Magazine, and The Examiner. It also summarizes and
contextualizes the opinions of Richard Holt Hutton, Walter Pater, Leslie Stephen,
and Matthew Arnold.
