1976.
After the events of
August 80, the song soon became an unofficial anthem, spontaneously chosen by Solidarity Trade Union
to express their opposition to the communist authorities. Today, these words still evoke the strikes at the
shipyards and best illustrate the goals pursued throughout decades by generations who wanted to restore
a sovereign and truly independent Poland.
This quotation has been chosen as the title of one of the permanent exhibitions at the Independence
Museum in Warsaw, devoted to the history of the Polish opposition in
1945-1989.
The exhibition covers the
entire period and shows various opposition factions, active both in Poland and abroad. It also illustrates
diverse forms of resistance and methods in which opposition to the reality of those times was manifested.
Introduction to the exhibition focuses on the Yalta Conference in
1945,
an event which defined the Polish
political position in Europe and across the world for nearly half a century.
The part entitled „The Unsubmissive is divided into two sections. The first one is about the opposition
members active abroad: it presents the activity of the Polish Govemment-in-Exile, different political parties
as well as their information, educational and cultural activity. A lot of attention is given to the Literary
Institute in Paris, publishing Polish fiction and books in such disciplines as philosophy, history of philosophy,
political science and politics. Another section shows the history of Radio Free Europe

a radio station
continuously jammed by the government in Poland, which was broadcasting news and providing
commentary on current political, economic and cultural issues.

A broad section is dedicated to the opposition movement in Poland. It illustrates the history of the Polish
underground movement, the role of the Roman Catholic Church in keeping up the nation s spirit, and
finally the role of different organizations and opposition groups, coming from various social milieus
and political camps. On the one hand, there were intelligentsia groups, which wanted to reach agreement
and find ways of political existence without submitting to the communist authorities, and postulated
peaceful action. However, there were also illegal groups or associations whose political agenda, often
far-fetched, evoked the ideas of the Second Republic. They aimed at discrediting or abolishing the system,
and used propaganda methods (distribution of leaflets, press) and militant action, which they usually
treated as a kind of spectacular demonstration. One of them was a plan to burn the Museum of Lenin
in Poronin.
A separate faction of the opposition movement, oriented towards the current social problems rather
than long-term political activity, was formed by the organizations focused on the protection of human
and civil rights. They put stress on education highlighting the issues which were quite controversial for the
government.
The opposition movement in Poland could develop thanks to the involvement from both intelligentsia and
working class, which was necessary to initiate and carry out transformations. Waves of public protest
caused by dissatisfaction with the government economic policy spread among large groups of population,
provoking considerable reaction in Poland. Its price, however, was disproportionately high compared to the
effects, considering big numbers of victims. Street demonstrations, additionally instigated by the Secret
Services (SB), often got out of control and were finally suppressed by the militiamen and military troops.
The last part of the exhibition entitled The Twilight of the People s Poland , shows the social mechanisms
which led to the collapse of the old system. It comprises the final years of communism in Poland, starting
from the formation of Free Trade Unions, which were in fact independent from the authorities and the
employers controlled by the government. This section also illustrates the events of August
80
which gave
rise to Solidarity movement and features the martial law imposed by the government on
13
December
1981.
It closes with the formal and real end of the Polish People s Republic
(PRL)
in
1989
and election
of the
Lech Wałęsa
as President of the Third Republic of Poland.
