Anglo-American Aerial Bombardments of Croatia in World War II, Allied
Air Attacks on the Independent State of Croatia,
1943-1945
Allied aerial activity in South-Eastern Europe was defined at the conference
of British and American leaders and military commanders in Quebec in August
1943
and at the conference of Allied leaders (F. D. Roosevelt, W. Churchill and J.
Stalin) held in Teheran during November and December
1943.
At these conferen¬
ces the Allies decided to give material and other support to the People's Liberation
Army of Yugoslavia. In August
1944
Marshall Tito, supreme commander of the
People's Liberation Army, met with representatives of western Allies and British
prime minister Churchill in
Casería
and Naples. During these meetings an agree¬
ment was reached on coordinated actions of People's Liberation Army of Yugosla¬
via and Allied Balkan Air Force.
Activities of Tito's partisan forces went hand in hand with
tihe
Allied attempt
to make the withdrawal of German army from Greece and Yugoslav area as dif¬
ficult as possible. Western Allies wanted to avoid the German forces stationed in
the Balkan to redeploy in Italy because British and American troops already faced
stubborn German resistance on the Italian battlefield.
From October
1943
to May
1945
the Allied aircrafts attacked various targets
at the territory of the Independent State of Croatia. The targets included concen¬
tration of Axis forces, towns, factories, airports, railway junctions, seaports and
bridges and all means of land and naval transportation, cars, trains and ships.
Main strategic objectives of Allied attacks were to destroy and disable Axis
military potentials and also to demoralize the local population. These objectives
were achieved through the use of 'carpet bombing" and such bombardment of
wider areas also had consequences on the moral of the population. The consequ¬
ence of "carpet bombing" was not only the destruction of the planned objectives
but also a widespread damage to the civilian objects and heavy casualties among
civilian population.
Allied air attacks on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia caused
heavy losses to the Axis forces and serious disruption of the traffic. As the con¬
sequence of air attacks supply of Axis forces and civilian population and economic
activities were also disrupted. The moral of the Armed Forces of the Independent
State of Croatia and civilians was also affected by the air campaign. Croatian sol¬
diers deserted from their units and ran over to partisans and civilians moved out

of bombarded towns into surrounding areas. In such circumstances normal life
was brought to a standstill.
Even small scale attacks from the air and the mere presence of Allied aircraft
in the airspace above Independent State of Croatia had far reaching consequences
on the moral and conditions of live of the civilian population because it aban¬
doned its homes and lived under constant fear of new air attacks. The work in
factories and workshops was disrupted and reduced to short periods early in the
morning and in the late afternoon. Agricultural activities, fishing in the coastal
areas and transport of supplies were also threatened by Allied fighters and figh¬
ter-bombers. Air attacks on communications also disrupted food supplies for the
towns. Communal activities in towns were reduced to periods of lower visibility
from dusk until dawn. The level of danger from air attacks was highest between

PM and many citizens usually left their homes and moved outside
towns before that period. During the period of greatest danger of air attacks all
activities in towns were brought to a standstill. In the early mornings and late
afternoons a semblance of normal life was restored. For this reason the curfew
became meaningless.
Air raid precautions service
(Narodna zaštita)
tried to help the population of
towns targeted by Allied air attacks.
Air attacks caused great strain on civilians but such attacks also caused dama¬
ge on numerous towns. In some cases bombardments completely leveled whole
parts of towns
(Slavonski Brod, Zadar,
Split,
Bihać).
In a long terms such destruc¬
tion completely changed centuries old course of urban development. After the
rubble was cleansed the town structure was left with empty areas that affected the
original structure of space and appearance of towns.
In bombarded towns railway lines, industrial objects and ports were located
near the residential areas and cultural monuments and this caused great destruc¬
tion that had no military significance. Unnecessary destruction was also caused
because Allies lacked enough reliable intelligence data for particular targets and
their pilots and crews were also inexperienced.
Numerical data shows the intensity of Allied air raids on towns in the territory
of the Independent State of Croatia. The most attacked town in Croatia proper
was Split

ed. These are not completely accurate or final number of casualties because not all
data was available to give exact number of air attack casualties in every town and
rural areas.
This book does not include all data concerning the material damage caused
by Allied air bombings. Nevertheless according to available data the most severe
damage was caused in
Slavonski/Bosanski Brod, Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Vinkov¬
ci
in Croatia proper and in Sarajevo,
Bihać
and
Mostar
in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Obviously the intensity of air attacks on Independent State of Croatia nor on
any other state of territory cannot be compared with the intensity of Allied air
attacks on German Reich but Allied air raids were everywhere characterized by
numerous collateral victims and collateral damage. This book is an attempt to give
a count of air raids victims in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina because this topic
was previously unresearched.
