The exhibition First Military School (Corps of Cadets)
in Menshikov s Palace:
275
Years of the Foundation is
located in the Palace of Alexander Menshikov, Peter the
Great s closest associate and the first Governor of
St. Petersburg.
Menshikov s Palace was built by Francesco
Fontana
and
Johann-Gottfried Schädel.
Completed in
1710,
the
palace became one of the most noticeable places of the
new capital of Russia, surprising the contemporaries by
the luxury of its interior decoration. The palace was
Alexander Menshikov s residence until September
1727,
when his brilliant career was put an end to; he was exiled
from St. Petersburg never to see it again.
Another period in the history of the Palace is con¬
nected with the military school located in it. Originally,
it was called the School of the Corps of Cadets; in
1743,
it became the Nobility School of the Army, and in
1800,
the First Military School. Established by Anne Ioannov-
na s Ukase of
29
July
1731,
the School was opened on
17
February
1732.
For nearly two centuries, it was
housed in Menshikov s Palace, being an integral part of
its history.
The establishment of the Military School on the
premises of the Palace resulted in considerable changes
in the Palace architecture. The
façade
was rebuilt to
correspond to the new architectural tendencies and the
Palace generally became adjusted to the demands of an
educational institution. Aware of the building s ties with
the Menshikov period in its history, however, the new
inhabitants of the Palace preserved some of the interiors
with the decoration of the time of Peter the Great, e. g.
the tiled rooms and the Walnut Parlour, which are part
of today s Menshikov Palace exhibition of the Hermitage.
From
1732
to
1918,
a number of outstanding pro¬
fessors taught in the First Military School; among its
graduates were renowned military leaders and civil
servants, e. g. Pyotr Rumyantsev-Zadunaiski, Mikhail
Kutuzov,
Friedrich
(Fedor)
Anhalt,
Alexander Sumaro-
kov, Mikhail Kheraskov and others.
The exhibition includes materials from the collec¬
tions of the Hermitage, the Museum of the History of
Artillery, the Corps of Engineers and the Signal Corps,
the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, and the
Museum of Applied Arts of St. Petersburg Academy of
Industrial Arts. Paintings, drawings, works of applied
arts, uniforms and insignia, picture cards, medals, ma¬
nuscripts, published works and photos illustrate the
main stages of the history of the First Military School.
The exhibition is dedicated to the 275th anniversary
of the School. The last time the School s anniversary was
celebrated in
Menhsiko^s
Palace was on the occasion
of its
175
years, in
1907,
when Nicholas II became the
patron of the School. The exhibition shows materials
dedicated to the event, which include pictures of the
interiors created specially for the event, as well as
Osip
Braz s portrait of Nicholas II with the Corps School
building in the background from the collection Tsar-
skoye
Selo
Museum Reserve, presumably painted in
connection with the
1907
celebration.
In the focus of the exhibition is the iconography
connected with different periods of the Palace history.
One section of the exhibition is devoted to the Mu¬
seum of the First Military School, which remained after
the First Military School had been closed, until
1928.
It shows unique materials from the archive of the last
Director of the Museum, A. A. Krutetsky, donated to the
Hermitage by his grand children, I. B. Kharitonova and
A. Yu. Ladvez.
At the exhibition, the history of the First Military
School is shown in the context of the history of Menshi¬
kov s Palace, one of the first stone buildings in St. Pe¬
tersburg. Among other things, this is concordant with the
public interest in the history of Russian Military Schools
and their revival nowadays.
