On the Way to Freedom.
The Citizens of
Mielec
Struggling for The Independent Poland
in
1907-1918
Uprisings and national insurrections, have always made great impression
and met with response from the society of
Mielec
area and the region although
they comprised the central part of Polish land. Many citizens of
Mielec
actively
fought and shedded their blood in close arrays and participated in plots whose
aim was to regain independence. The Insurrection of January
1863
marked
their behaviour with a special stamp.
The town stood out then by a large number of volunteers joining in¬
surgents and by efficient running of the national organization. The legend of
insurrections and especially the January
1863
one, laid further foundations to
the idea of independent state, mainly in the young generation and supported
awareness of forthcoming outbreak of universal war. An insurgent epos of Janu¬
ary
1863
was helpful to the patriotic bringing-up in the
Mielec
school, which was
a hotbed for staff of further conspirators, fighters and soldiers and favouring
independence organizations being active in the town. Despite all differences
concerning the program, public and conspiratorial organizations acting for in¬
dependence, cooperated with one another in the field of military training of
their members and had often joint military training.
At the moment of outbreak the World War I they supported the idea of
armed fighting for independence by sending their members into rifle brigades
(of the Polish Legions)
.
The
Mielec
area has become a leading one in
Galicia
on that score in
the circle of comparable towns as regards their size. War ways of members of
the Polish legions spread in all squads of

brigades, were similar to ways of all
remaining legionary comrades.
Considerable majority of them served in the infantry. Others, one by
one went to the cavalry, artillery, communication, military police, sappers, lo¬
gistics, health service. They were also instructors for new recruitments. Espe¬
cially, the first voluntary fighting group, which set off to Cracow in the middle
of August
1914
provided the officer s cadre with coming generation. They were
promoted the fastest. They also gave evidence of the greatest, sometimes even
furious courage which was proved by awarding the Crosses of
Virtuti
Military.
The seventeen members of the Polish Legions from the
Mielec
group paid the
highest price. If we add to that toll other three ones died because of wounds,
another one because of epidemic disease, other

ones died in the Russian slav¬
ery and finally one committed a suicide, so altogether
24
people sacrificed their
lives for independent Poland. It is also worth mentioning that in the legionary

fights

others died from the area of the Congress Kingdom of Poland, who
joined the legions following the shortest way through
Mielec.
Going to the Italian front was regarded by old soldiers like a punish¬
ment, specific penal colony for disobedience to the Habsburgs Monarchy. Be¬
ing taken an Italian prisoner was a natural way to join the setting up Polish
Army.
The
Mielec
Polish Organization (POW) was established in early spring
of
1918
and in the autumn composed of
90
people, divided into hidden
groups of six . The biggest drawback was the small number of weapons, which
they were trying to get in every possible way. An intense training and educa¬
tional independence favouring work was carried out. Activities started in early
Novembers days by the
Mielec POW ,
should be judged favourably. The orga¬
nization was not surprised by events, it carried out its main duty, which was to
take possession of the town and district, take over and keep the power over the
area. This aim was reached practically without power, thanks to good training
and supply with weapons (mainly machine guns) and it was even possible to sup¬
port other towns
Dębica
and
Rzeszów
in military operations taking place there.
The organization transformed itself very quickly from a conspiratorial one into
regular supporting company of the Polish Army, guarding security and order in
the time of revolutionary upheaval in the so called Republic of
Tarnobrzeg .
The first weeks of independence in
1918
were characterized by spontaneity and
generosity, typical to the society of
Mielec.
Thanks to patriotic approach, responsibility and flexibility of civil
servants from
Mielec,
taking over the administration was successful as well as
avoiding chaos both in the town and its district. The joy over regained free¬
dom penetrated with generosity and a will to get hold of it. The Resolution
of the Communal Council on building the Town Hall of Freedom became
a symbol.
The other part of the book contains short biographies of a few hundred
of legionaries, soldiers and activists struggling for independence meritorious
for regaining independence of Poland in
1918,
after

years of annexation.
