Archaeoastronomy is the fascinating
science of the stars and the stones.
This science s main objective is to study the
relationship between celestial cycles and the
great monuments of the past to better
understand our ancestors knowledge of
astronomy and attempt to unravel their
symbolic world. If used with due caution,
this discipline yields formidable insights into
the meanings of the many wonders of the
past such as the pyramids of Egypt or the
Inca
citadels.
In Mysteries and Discoveries of
Archaeoastronomy, written in an easy-to-
follow style by an internationally
acknowledged scholar of archaeoastronomy,
the reader is guided on a worldwide tour-
from Stonehenge to Easter Island, from
Chaco
Canyon to the
Nasca
desert- in search
of both the spectacular achievements and
the surviving mysteries of this new science.
The book ends with an in-depth discussion of
the archaeoastronomy of ancient Egypt in the
pyramid age, presenting for the first time the
surprising results of the author s own recent
research into one of the most
is in the worl
the
Giza
plateau.
Giulio Magli
is a full
Professor at the Faculty
of Civil Architecture of
the
Politecnico
of Milan
where he teaches the
only official course on
archaeoastronomy ever
established in Italy. He earned a Ph.D. in
Mathematical Physics at the University of
Milan in
1992
where his research activity
originally concerned relativistic astrophysics.
But for more than ten years now his research
interests have been focused on archaeo¬
astronomy, with an emphasis on the
relationship between architecture, landscape,
and the astronomical lore of ancient cultures,
especially the
Incas
and the ancient Egyptians.

Giulio magli
This complete, authoritative study of the growing discipline of archaeoastronomy
examines the role of astronomy in antiquity. Professor
Giulio Magli
provides a clear,
up-to-date survey of current thinking on the motives of the ancients for building
fabulous and mysterious monuments all over our planet. Was it an attempt to repro¬
duce the sky on Earth? To put at the foundation of power the ability to predict and
control the cycles of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars?
Magli
uses archaeoastronomy
as a key to understanding our ancestors way of thinking. It is a challenge which
could be called predicting the past.
The motives of the ancients have often been misconstrued, maligned, or even
dismissed.
Magli
shows the limitations of orthodox archaeology in relation to astro¬
nomically based artifacts and tries to understand what led the ancients to construct
such magnificent structures as the city of Teotihuacan in the Mexico Valley, the
Ceremonial Center of
Chaco
Canyon in the United States, Stonehenge in Great
Britain, and the great pyramids in Egypt.
In this book, the reader is taken on a world tour of many wonderful and enigmatic
places on almost every continent, in search of traces of astronomical knowledge and
lore of the sky. Then, the author discusses the fundamental ideas that he believes led
to the construction of the giant monuments. Finally,
Magli
revisits one place in
greater detail
-
Giza
-
in an attempt to provide proof for his ideas on the mindset of
ancient cultures.
This fascinating book will take you places and times far removed from our own, and
stimulate your imagination in regards to other people and other cultures. The result
will be a better understanding of who we are and where we come from.
