Summary
The nine-chapter monograph acquaints the reader with selected
migrational systems which affect the Czech Republic and with the
migration communities who take advantage of these systems and
reproduce them.
In the Preface,
Zdeněk Uherek
acquaints the reader with the structure
of the book. He indicates which views of migration the book
predominantly offers. In his interpretation, the book mainly attempts
to emphasise the fact that immigrants bring a certain cultural capital
with them from the source countries, which they intend to develop
further in the target destinations. They try to build on their existing
knowledge and awareness and not to live the life of the majority
society. They want to live their own lives and fulfil their own dreams
which they often dreamt long before migration. The book hence
attempts to take into account the perspective on the immigrant groups
in connection with their country of origin. Another reason that it tries
to understand the behaviour of the immigrant groups better precisely
by means of the country of origin is the specific migration situation in
Central Europe, where we have recorded a high number of short-term
migrations, the aim of which is to improve the conditions of the labour
migrants and their families in the source countries of migration. In this
respect, the work actively draws on the theory of migrational systems,
theories of relative deprivation and migrational networks, which are
fittingly complemented by other known migrational theories.
The authors of the second chapter, entitled Research in the Area of
Migration and the Integration of Foreigners on the Territory of the
Czech Republic are
Tereza Poj arová, Zdeněk Uherek and Renata
Weinerová.
The chapter summarises the sources and literature which
have been published in the Czech Republic on the problems of
migration and migration groups. The chapter mentions only
professional, published texts and examples of successful doctoral

dissertations
and magisterial theses. Their aim is to provide the
readers with an overview of the rich production on the given topic and
simultaneously to convince less trained colleagues that the foreigner
question offers sufficient material to be drawn and built upon.
The third chapter, Migration, Post-migration Processes and Their
Theoretical Thematisations, is of a theoretical-methodological
character and was prepared by
Zdeněk Uherek.
Its main aim is
predominantly to present in further detail the migration theories and
concepts which are applied in the following texts. Other than that,
attention is paid to the concepts of adaptation, acculturation and
integration. Such works and concepts have been selected that form
historic milestones in the areas of migration, adaptation and
integration along with works which are half-forgotten despite the fact
that they could be inspirational even to the present. Contemporary
outcomes representing the theoretical thought in the area in question
follow. The ideas of such classics as E. G. Ravenstein, W. Petersen,

The chapter Immigration to the Czech Republic and the Families of
Foreigners, which was written by
Zdeněk Uherek, Milada Horáková,
Tereza Poj arová and Zuzana Korecká,
is a synoptic treatise informing
on the numbers, character and socio-demographic profile of the
immigrants. When identifying individual groups, the chapter uses
primarily classification according to citizenship. What is specific
about it is that it pays close attention to the localisation of family
migration. This is motivated by the fact that currently the number of
foreigners in the Czech Republic with permanent residence in
particular is growing and with them also foreigners who do not come
alone and for a short time but who want to live in the Czech Republic.
This is predominantly family migration. Another reason is that
citizenship separates immigrants into certain categories, but from the
perspective of everyday sociability these categories are often
misleading. Foreigners do not live in social units organised according
to their citizenship but according to other criteria. And family is in this
area certainly a key unit. Numerical series characterising the basic

developmental trends of migration to the Czech Republic are
presented in the text and works which elaborate the theme are
mentioned.
The chapter Labour Migration from Trans Carpathian Ukraine to the
Czech Republic, which was written by
Zdeněk Uherek, Naďa
Valáškova, Kateřina Bělohradská and Mikuláš Mušinka
is
a study
building on field experience with the source area, which is one of the
most significant source areas of immigration for the Czech Republic.
The migration system between the Czech Republic and
Transcarpathian Ukraine has undergone significant changes during its
existence. When treating the material, the authors focused on the
diachronic perspective and showed that although Ukrainian workers
did not begin to be noticed in the Czech milieu by the contemporary
population of the Czech Republic until the
1990s,
they were building
upon a migrational system which had begun to form already in the
second half of the 19th century and the movement along which was
not entirely interrupted even during the time of Communism. The text
also presents what people in Transcarpathian Ukraine think of
migrations, how they dispose of the money earned and how they speak
about their labour migrational destinations.
The author of the chapter Post-migration Processes: Immigrants
from South Ukrainian Novgorodkivka in the Czech Republic is
Kateřina Bělohradská,
who jointly with
Zdeněk Uherek
implemented
field research among

immigrants from southern Ukraine in a small
district town in West Bohemia. Part of the group is of Czech origin,
including the descendants of Czech emigrants to Ukraine in the 19th
century; another part is of Ukrainian origin, their marriage partners.
The text captures what immigrating to the Czech Republic involves
for the immigrant. This is family migration, and family members
describe the pitfalls of arranging permanent residence as well as
integrating into the local society. Part of the research was
implemented through standardised questions recorded in
questionnaires. In one part of the text, the author also comments on
the data acquired in this way.
The author of the chapter Sociability of the Vietnamese Ethnic Group
in Prague is
Šárka Martínková.
Her work draws upon field data
gained among the Vietnamese population of the Czech Republic. She

begins the work with a historical retrospective, where she elucidates
the creation and original purpose of specifically-built migrational
system between the then Vietnamese Socialist Republic and
Czechoslovakia, when the Vietnamese pro-Soviet government took
advantage of the offer of residence and education in what was then
Czechoslovakia, and the Czechoslovak governing classes
subsequently realised that an opportunity was arising here to gain a
cheap labour force and began to make use of this chance. In her study,
Šárka Martínková
further captures the rebirth which occurred after
1989,
when the Vietnamese in Czechoslovakia radically changed their
livelihood strategies and for the most part started doing business. The
author in her description focuses on the Prague community, which is
the most numerous in the Czech Republic. She mostly localises the
lodging of the Vietnamese in Prague housing estates and focuses
mainly on those who are linked with the open-air market
Sapa,
which
is the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic.
Šárka Martínková
shows that it is actually a city in a city, which mediates a similarly
broad spectrum of services for its tradesmen as a large European city.
In the study, she also summarises the activities of the Vietnamese
in Prague. She writes about Vietnamese associations, schools and
cultural establishments which are active in Prague.
The text Migration from Macedonia and Its Transformations by
Zuzana
Korecka
is not narrowly focused on the Czech Republic but
maps the situation in the country of origin in terms of the wider
spectra of target destinations. Macedonia has a long-term tradition of
emigration, and almost a third of Macedonians live outside
Macedonia. Macedonia is a part of numerous migrational systems, on
some of which
Zuzana
Korecka
reports. She is interested in how
migration has been developing here since the second half of the 19th
century. She monitors when and under which conditions long-term
and under which conditions short-term migrations dominated, how the
migrants explained to themselves their stances to the populations in
the target destinations and how they conceptualised the countries
where they travelled for work. The final passage of the text on
Macedonian labour migration focuses on the situation after the
disintegration of Yugoslavia and the subsequent military conflicts.
These did not impinge upon Macedonia directly but affected the

economic
situation
of the country and resulted also in an influx of
Albanian refugees from Kosovo and another wave of migrations
from Macedonia to the West.
In the Conclusion,
Zdeněk Uherek
speaks about the fundamental
determinants which have influenced migration to the Czech Republic
and contributed to the formation of the existing migration systems
passing through the Czech Republic.
