HISTORY EDUCATION IN BULGARIA
1878-1944
(Methodical and Historical Analysis)
Summary
A process of transformation of the school history education model
has been carried out since the beginning of the
1990s
under the conditions
of deep and comprehensive changes of the Bulgarian society. All parts of
the teaching process
-
aims, values, teaching contents, teaching methods,
teacher's role, etc.
-
are facing serious challenges. The debate over the so¬
cial functions of history as a school subject is activated.
In the wide range of value and methodical (didactical) topics in the
discussion acute problems related to the contemporary understanding of pa¬
triotic education show up. Public feelings hardly make distinction between
"nationalism" as a cultural and historical doctrine of the nineteenth century
and the concept of the contemporary civil (political) nation. The ethnic na¬
tionalism is in contradiction to the value orientations based on the ideas of
the so called "pedagogy for peace".
This research sets itself the tasks of conceptualizing the Bulgarian ex¬
perience in history teaching during the period of
1878-1944
through objec¬
tive contents study of representative number of Bulgarian history textbooks
and works on methods of teaching; establishing interrelation, synthesis and
parallels between value orientations, teaching contents and historical and
methodical ideas in Bulgaria and the European world; finding pillars for
building bridges to help Bulgarian history education enter the European
cultural space after decades of flagrant ideologization.
CHAPTER ONE of the monograph
-
"The Bulgarian History
Education of the
1990s
Facing the Challenges of the European
Integration" examines one of the marks of transformation: the didactical
and methodical problems connected with the creation of "new generation"
history textbooks. It outlines the ideas of writing history textbooks in unit¬
ing Europe. According to the "European" view a "good" textbook is the one
which helps the
studení
to live in a multicultural society in conformity with
the democratic values, to think critically, to be tolerant to different view¬
points about the past, to respect the history and cultural heritage of his own
nation and of the other nations as well.

The presentation of two history projects for regional textbooks
-
"History of Europe"
(1993)
and "The Black Sea. History of Interactions"
(2004,
with the author's participation) illustrates the "philosophy" and "tech¬
nology" of creating present-day textbooks within the European Union.
CHAPTER TWO
-
"History as a School Subject in the First Decades
after the Liberation. Accelerated Modernization"
-
connects the analysis
of the history textbooks for the third and fourth elementary school forms and
for the third high-school class with the political and cultural situation in the
first three decades of the Bulgarian statehood. The prevalence of nationalistic
emotion in the teaching books for the elementary school is revealed.
In the Bulgarian history textbooks for the high-school third class there
is more "scholarly knowledge", usage of sources and historical studies, rea¬
soning of facts. The idea of cultural and historical unity of the Bulgarian
people is clearly maintained. The ethno-national idea remains the underly¬
ing value basis of all textbooks.
The beginning of the methodical theory in history is connected with the
direct use of foreign methods. The first professional text for history teach¬
ing in Bulgarian language is the work of the famous historian and public
figure Nikola Stanev. He substantiates the European pedagogical views of
the essence of history as a school subject which gives an overall idea of the
society and serves for the shaping of rational citizens.
CHAPTER THREE
-
"History Teaching and the Bulgarian National
Project from the End of World War One to the Early
1940s" -
examined
the problems of history education in the significantly changed political con¬
text of the decades between the Two World Wars. The author analyses the
historical, methodological and didactical aspects of
N.
Stanev's textbook in
Bulgarian history for the third junior high-school class. Its pedagogical mer¬
its and messages to the national historical consciousness stand out. Stanev's
"reading" of the historical past balances the ethnic nationalism with tolerant
interpretations and objectivity.

The responsible civic and scientific position of
N.
Stanev as a specialist
in educational methods and author of textbooks is confirmed by his "History
of New Bulgaria". This work recommended as a school appliance for high
schools combines the modern research methodology, scholarly uprightness,
impartiality, social commitment. The interpretation of the Bulgarian history
made by
N.
Stanev being "didactically" oriented lays "bridges" of reason
from the past to its own time, suggests possibilities for debate, directs to
inferences for the contemporary political behaviour of the elites.

In this chapter the author presents two systems of methods for history
teaching: the one belongs to the University Professor
Mihail
Geraskov, the
other
-
to the model high-school teacher Dimitar Kostov. The comparison
between them outlines their methodological, didactical and methodical and
historical proximity: both of them are humanists and liberally thinking ped¬
agogues, a part of the pedagogical thought of Europe. The key thesis of their
Methods is the development of students' brains, moulding them as worthy
citizens capable of building the future of the Bulgarian society.
The conclusion substantiates the thesis that the Bulgarian history school
education by the end of the
1930s
was a part of the liberal and humanitar¬
ian space of the European pedagogical thought. Despite the protuberances
of the ethic nationalism in Bulgaria, "love to the Motherland and man¬
kind", "true and impartial teaching", "rising of civic and political con¬
sciousness", "avoiding any bias", "consent with scientific data", absolute
teacher's impartiality" remained the key messages of teaching.
In spite of the recurrent manifestations of ethnic nationalism in society
the authors of textbooks and particularly the specialists in history teaching
methods maintained the ideas of cultivating humanitarian historical con¬
sciousness through the process of teaching.
Today the debate on nationalism in the Bulgarian space is still going on.
