This book is devoted to Velko Radev Koroleev and his Eternal Calendar.
The author, L.P.Krustev, as great-grand-grandson of V. R. Koroleev, possesses
as a family treasure, the only copy of this book. It was published in
1853,
in
Istanbul, in
3000
copies, and consists of
199
pages.
Among the various interesting facts in this Mesetzoslov or Eternal Cal¬
endar is the introduction, for the first time, of a new holiday in the Christian
Calendar. This was n* of May (now 24th May)
-
the day, on which the saint
brothers Cyril and Methodius were suggested to be honoured. But let us start
with the beginning of the story, Chapter I.
The earliest data in our possession is about the father of V.R.Koroleev,
the wealthy man
Rad
Koroleev from Panaguriste. (This village is huddled at
the foot of Sredna
Gora
mountain). He was born in the middle of the 18th

and died at the beginning of the 19th

had a few children but unfortu¬
nately, some of them died young while others left home, and were not heard
from or about any longer.
Visiting an exhibition of kin and family trees in Bulgaria, several years
ago, I came across a huge family tree beginning with a person, called Elidjan
Koroleya
(i.e.
Koroleev) from Panaguriste. All these people have been living
quite far from Panaguriste, and have had no contacts with the people or the
place, after the afore mentioned Elidjan. There are no records about his life
or from him. The reading of the dates in the family tree shoes that he is most
probably Velko Koroleev s brother.
Why Elidjan was so secretive about his origin? As a haidut, he must
have been wanted by the Turks and had fled to the empire s western-most
parts. His name Elidjan is not on the list of Bulgarian names of the time
and was perhaps chosen after the Eledjik Mount near his hometown of Pa¬
naguriste.
All this is included at the beginning of this book, and the first chapter
continuoes with the earliest solid archive data, concerning my father s great

grandfather, Velko Radev (or
Radov,
as he was called in the earlier part of his
life) Koroleev. He was born in
1798
and died in
1903.
He went to a monastic
school in his home village. There the quiet son of a well-off trader of cattle and
pedigree horses heard the shocking history told by some monks, who came
from the Mount Athon s monasteries, and who brought with themselves a
copy of Father Paisii s landmark book Slavo-Bulgarian History. He realized
that Bulgaria had been a great state in southeastern Europe with its own tzars
(kings) and patriarchs and a country, using its own alphabet much earlier than
other powerful European countries.
The letters of the alphabet were invented by the brothers Cyril and Meth¬
odius in the reign of king Boris I, who converted Bulgarians to Christianity
and made it possible for the brothers disciples to keep up their good work.
The Cyrillic alphabet was later adopted in Macedonia, Serbia, Russia etc, and
is now one.of the official alphabets used in the European Union.
That is, of course, much more than the young boy in Panaguriste, could
dream of

years ago. The two brothers caught his imagination and that
helped him graduate from school with honors and run his father s trading firm
in Istanbul, the capital of the empire. Doing business there was just one part of
his pursuit of excellence. Prince
Stephan
Bogoridi, the one and only Christian
pasha and adviser to the sultan, asked him to become his scribe (i.e. secre¬
tary). The offer was accepted right away and he left for the island of
Samos,
together with Gavrail Krustevich, who was the governor of the territory.
This work on the island was a gift from the sultan for distinguished ser¬
vice and Krustevich and Koroleev were sent to run the affairs of the place.
They were the only Bulgarians there. The other staff members were a few
Greeks and a score of Turkish soldiers to work as guards.
The two of them stayed on the island for

years.. Being not very busy
with administration, they were able to indulge in their passion for the history
of Bulgaria. Krustevich had studied in the best schools of the empire and had
graduated with honors in law from the
Sorbonne
in Paris. He worked on a
book History of Bulgaria.
V. Koroleev devoted himself to the work of the two brothers from Thes-
salonica, Cyril and Methodius. The outcome was his Eternal Calendar . Thus,
we reach Chapter II
.
This part of our story is devoted almost entirely to Koroleev s work on his
Eternal Calendar, an unobtrusive book of

pages. It was the result of
years of searching in Istanbul s archives and libraries.
In addition
,
he had been in touch with eminent Bulgarians in the capital,
such as the church leaders
Antim
I, Ilarion Makariopolski and
Neofit Bozveli,
the theoretician and organizer of Bulgaria s revolutionary struggle,
Georgi Ra-
kovsky, the educationalists
Atañas Granitski
and
Stephan
Izvorski,
the well
known families of the Moravenov s, Geshov s, Chalukov s etc.

At the end of
1852
the Eternal Calendar was completed and printed in
3000
copies. On page
47
is introduced a new feast for the Christian church,
marking the brothers, the saints Cyril and Methodius, on the n* of May. The
first time they were celebrated on that day, in the Christian calendar was in
1853.
Before that date they had been celebrated separately.
V. KoroleeVs
ex¬
planation to his friends and family for choosing that day in May was, thatthe
two brothers were the first and most prominent saints of Bulgarians and Slavs.
The number

stood for their importance as primates of the church, and
because they were equal
-
the date became
11.
The month was chosen to be
May as that is the finest month in the year for that part of the country.
Around
30
pages of the chapter present a translation of different parts of
the Calendar from the Old Bulgarian language, to that, used nowadays. At the
same time, a photocopy of the entire original Eternal Calendar is offered to the
readers as a Second Part of the present book.
One of the interesting aspects of this Calendar is that besides being ex¬
actly that, at the same time, it has much to do with a small encyclopedia
ofthat
time. It covers topics as different as philosophy and astrology, chiromancy
and tourism, pedagogy and religion, to mention just a few of them. It is obvi¬
ous, that the real substance could be felt only in contact with the original...
That is how we rich Chapter III.
Sacrilege cried the Greek Patriarch s administration. In this period the
Bulgarian church was not autonomous, but the Bilgarian religious community
was under the auspices of the Greek Patriarchate in the Turkish capital. The
courage to introduce a new holiday into the Christian Calendar was perceived
as some kind of blasphemy, furthermore the calendar s creator had not even
asked for permission.
The reaction was prompt: the officials of the Greek Patriarchate investi¬
gated Koroleev; his Eternal Calendar was announced heretical; all the copies
found by the authorities were incriminated and confiscated, and the author
had to flee to Moldavia and Walachia. To earn his living in exile, he taught
Bulgarians in Bolgrad and other centers, where his compatriots, that had fled
from the Turkish authorities in the empire, lived.
In
1874
he was still in Walachia, but since several years, with his elder
son
-
Ivan V. Koroleev. This young man had graduated Theology from the
Kiev University, and for the last several years had been working as a teacher in
Bolgrad (Moldavia) and in different villages and towns around it.
During these years, father and son had the opportunity to work and in
some cases, at least meet, the Bulgarian rebel leader
-
Stefan Karadja, the
poet and Bulgarian hero
- Christo Botev,
the organizer of the Bulgarian strug¬
gle for independence from the Turks
-
the Apostle Vasil Levski etc. Thus we
come to
1874
and to the end of Chapter III.

In
1874
Bulgarians won their first freedom
-
the religious one, and our
first
Exarche
was chosen. This was the former archbishop of
Vidin
-
Antim
I.
In his efforts to include more Bulgarians in the religious affairs and the educa¬
tion of his folk, one of his first acts was to invite all Bulgarian patriots to return
and work with him. Among them were also Velko Koroleev and his son Ivan,
and that s how Chapter IV starts.
The father s task was to introduce a system of education in the ecclesi¬
astical province of
Lovech,
and in particular, in Orchanie, today s Botevgrad.
At that time, Velko Koroleev was almost
80
years of age.The old teacher s re¬
cords and writings of this period show a man of commitment and enthusiasm
just as in his young years.
Some of them have not lost their meaning even nowadays.
During these two years,
1874-1876,
Ivan V. Koroleev returned to his na¬
tive Panaguriste and worked as a teacher. His colleagues were revolutionar¬
ies as Pavel Bobekov,
Raina
Popgeorgieva Futekova, his brother Petko V. Ko¬
roleev etc. In fact, all of them were engaged in the conspiracies that prepared
the April Uprising of
1876.
The father, V. Koroleev could not stay far from
Panaguriste any more, and several months before the struggle, he returned to
his home place.
The Uprising began on the 20th of April. The hard-won freedom lasted
only

days. On April 30th, Turkish troops crashed the rebels. Ivan was slain
in front of his father s eyes. Petko was put in chains and sent to prison in
Anatolia together with four hundred other Bulgarians. Koroleev s house and
nearly the whole of Panaguriste were burned to the ground.
Groaning with pain, the Bulgarians appealed for help. The Great Pow¬
ers sent a Commission to investigate. Europe, Russia and the USA, were look¬
ing for facts and evidence of atrocities and crimes. The few that had survived
were mourning their dead and were afraid to testify to a commission including
so many Turkish pashas. Grandfather Velko Koroleev stepped forward. Af¬
ter him came another old man, and the third was a Bulgarian revolutionary,
brought from the local prison.
They led the members of the Commission to the places where the victims
had been buried. On the second day the Pasha heading the Turkish delegation
agreed with the Europeans, Russians and Americans that the evidence was
more than a human being can bear to see.
V. Koroleev was eighty when Bulgaria achieved its independence. He
lived almost another thirty years, looking back at the suffering and sorrow
he had seen, and he himself had experienced, recording them with a goose
quill and giving his writings to educated boys to distribute them across the
Motherland...
