Wrocław,

Summary
The subject of discussion at the first half-day lasting session of the conference was History
of migration. Introductory lectures were given, among all, by Prof. Lech Leciejewicz (Migra¬
tions in the prehistory and the Middle Ages) and Prof.
Jerzy Strzelczyk
(Migrations within our
civilization circle of pre-industrial era). Due to time restrictions both the lectures presented only
selected, in hierarchical order though, facts from the earliest history of migration. Nevertheless,
they stressed the variety of migration processes regarding their causes as well as course of events
and consequences for civilization and social relations. The participants, including Prof. Jan Mach-
nik,
Henryk Samsonowicz, Tadeusz
Kotula,
Maciej
Salamon,
Witold Mańczak, Hanna
Táborská,
Lech Tyszkiewicz, Tomasz Jaworski,
and others, raised the problematic issue of courses of events
which took place during migrations, however, their opinions, concentrating mostly on typological
aspects, reached far beyond the exact subject of discussion. Significant is that the similarity be¬
tween all the migration processes regards, despite changes in civilization circumstances, the most
general motives for them, arising from the economic conditions in which a man was living, his
psychological state and a feeling of his freedom s restriction. The differences, on the other hand,
are reflected in the types of movements of migrants, who in the subsequent epochs in history de¬
veloped new technical means and improved social organization.
The general consensus that, regarding the character of our conference, should not be omitted,
was the following: first, migrations are universal phenomena in the history of mankind. They have
been taking place all over the world from its very hypothetical beginnings to the present. Secondly,
they are an immensely important phenomena, since they might be regarded as one of the driving
force behind the evolution of our species. Finally, they are positive phenomena. Despite having, as
every social phenomenon does, its dark sides, even tragic ones, in the final reckoning they played
a beneficial role in the humankind development.
The afternoon meeting was conducted under the title of Definitions and typology of migra¬
tions in the view of a wide range of academic disciplines. The introduction to discussion was
given by
Prof. Ewa Rzeteska-Feleszko,
with the lecture Linguistics towards the problematics of
migration and Prof.
Marek Górny,
Typology of migrations in the view of historical r-esearch. Since
many opinions on the typological aspect of migration had already been pronounced in the first
part of the conference, the speakers could go on strictly to in
medias
res. Doing so, both of them
used the concrete and circumstantial material taken mainly from the sphere ethnically belonging
to Poland. A group of participants in this session, among all, Prof.

The immensity of problematics of migration
-
spectacular in comparison with other proc¬
esses of historical character, whilst relatively well-known
-
resulted in the fact that less focus has
been kept on the definitions of migrations than their typology. Moreover, the conviction appeared
that in our memory, and therefore in our consciousness, mass migrations dominate over the ones
which less numbered human groups took or still are taking part in; yet, in effect, the results of the
latter ones might be equally significant.
A panorama of migrations presented by the participants of the meeting was in fact versatile
and covered various points of views on the discussed processes. However, two frame stages of mi¬
gration processes
-
emigration from the so-far place of living and settling new places
-
were not
discussed at a comparable level. In this context, more focus was given to the first phase and to the
diversity of reasons for migrations. We are aware that in historical research it is more intriguing
to study the beginnings of social phenomena than their closures. Nevertheless, it is worth consid¬
ering, whether it is more likely that not the reasons, but the consequences play a crucial role in
human development. Our opinion is that more attention should be given, and more research should
be done on the latter.
On the second day of the conference, the subject of the participants interest was Polish and
Central-European migrations in the 20th century. Wide introduction Polish migrations in the
19th and20th centuries was given by Prof.
Wojciech Wrzesiński.
The lecture of Prof. Jan Wasz-
kiewicz, Museum of post-war history of Silesia versus regional identity of Lower Silesia inhabi¬
tants in fact turned out to be the second introduction to the session. Apart from new participants
such as Prof. Edmund
Małachowicz, Mieczysław
Klimowicz, Roma
Galar, Jerzy Fekecz, Karol
Jonca,
Izolda
Topp-Wójtowicz, Jan Sokołowski,
and the speeches of debaters of the previous ses¬
sions, in our book this discussion was completed by the speech of Prof.
Franciszek Kusiak.
The discussion went into two directions. The first trend concerned the history of Polish
migration in the 20th century and relations between Polish and French, Polish and Macedonian
migrations. The second, engendered by the speech of Prof. Jan Waszkiewicz, was postulational
in its character and focused mainly on defining a profile and possibilities of realisation of the
Museum of Settlement in Lower Silesia, and the history of our region after
1945
in general. The
exchange of opinions in this matter assumed more of a theoretical character taking into account
a question of identity and multiplicity of cultures. For certain, this problematics will be discussed
also in the future debates organized within our academic circle. Before that, however, we can
declare with satisfaction that during our conference we reached a general agreement on the sig¬
nificance of Polish migrations for the development of our society and realisation of plans aimed at
commemoration of them.
