Hellenistic Tragedy
Summary
From ancient to modern times a little interest has been taken in post-Euripidean tragedy; it has
been either neglected or underestimated. Very often scholars talk even of decline or decadence of
the genre in comparison with the brilliance of the Greek Classical Era of the three Great Tragedians
(Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides). However, this comparison with the
5љ-сепћдгу
tragedy is
misleading from the methodological point of view. Hellenistic tragedy like the New Comedy has so
much individual features different from the classical type of the genre that it can even be regarded
as
a subgenre.
It is also impossible to agree with the scholars who claim the death of tragedy in the
beginning of the 4th century B.C. The expansion of theatrical activity in that time, the popularity
and mass production of plays resulted in professsionalisation of the theatre, which had a crucial
influence on the tragedy of that time. But definitely did not kill it. How vivid was the genre dur¬
ing these three centuries can be proved by analysing changes in the way of staging, undertaking
subjects and structure. Tragedy like all dramatic genres
ofthat
time was an important factor in the
process of Hellenisation and at the same time reflected contemporary sentiments and literary and
philosophical trends. In any case, the Hellenistic tragedy deserves further scholarly attention and
wider fame.
For this reason the main purpose of this work is the analysis of the development of Greek
tragedy from the conquest of Alexander the Great to the Roman times. When studying Hellenistic
tragedy, one has to realize that there is no single play preserved not only in its entirety but even in
the sufficient number of verses to give a complete depiction of the genre. As the most extensive frag¬
ment of the Hellenistic tragedy, Moschions TrGF
6,
has only
33
verses (due to the great controversy
over the genre, dubious theatricality and definitely not Greek material of Exagoge by Ezekiel I pass
over it in silence), and an average preserved fragment is less then
6
lines long, one should be very
careful and meek in drawing general conclusions.
The study of the Hellenistic tragedy is based on a survey of both direct and indirect evidence,
i.e. on fragments preserved in literary sources and the papyri, on kinds of ancient testimonies as
well as information contained in inscriptions and archaeological material. All discussed texts are
provided with Polish translation and commentaries.
Chapter I, entitled Tragedians and the tragedies, presents all known writers of the tragedy and
preserved fragments of the plays acknowledged as Hellenistic. It begins with the presentation of the
Alexandrian Pleiad
-
group of seven poets who because they were seven in number (Tz. Ad Lye)
and were shining in the art of tragedy like stars in Pleiad
(Σ Β
in Heph.) were given this name.
As there are several conflicting lists of the greatest Alexandrian tragedians, the number of presented
poets of Pleiad is nine: Sosiphanes,
Homerus
the Younger, Philiscus, Lycophron, Alexander Aetolus,
Sositheus, Dionysiades, Aiantiades and Euphronius. Remarks on the Pleiad are followed by presen¬
tation of all playwrights whose names and works are attested in literary sources, among them Mos-
chion, Timon of Phlius, Nicomachus of Alexandria in
Troas
and all tragedians and authors of satyr
plays known from Hellenistic inscriptions. The chapter ends with turning to the so-called
Fragmenta
Adespota
(i.e. Gyges-Fragment, POsl.
1413,
PBodm.
XXVIII,
POxy.
2746).
Chapter II, entitled Tragedy in the Hellenistic times, is devoted to the number of problems
connected with theory of the literary genre, historical and mythical subjects, the issues addressed in
the plays, metre and language.
Summary
229
In agreement with the spirit of the Alexandrian era theoretical treatises had important influence
on the development and moulding of tragedy and satyr play. No doubt that Aristotle s Poetics as well
as works of contemporary theoreticians were taken under consideration by Hellenistic playwrights.
In fact two members of Pleiad, Lycophron and Alexander Aetolus, were grammarians working in
the Alexandrian Library. Unfortunately, the most prominent treatise on Hellenistic poetics by Neop-
tolemus of Parion is lost and only scant echoes of his postulates on drama can be traced in Horace s
Ars Poetica.
One of the most significant changes in the tragedy of Hellenistic times was taking up political
subjects and showing interest in contemporary events on rulers courts. Lycophron s Cassandreians
and Moschion s Pheraioi belonged undoubtedly to this type of tragedy. As far as one can state politi¬
cal tragedy was, however, produced only in the first fifty years of the 3rd century B.C. Incessantly
popular were mythological plays. I attempt to compare here some mythological subjects undertaken
in Hellenistic tragedy with parallel treatments in the 5th century B.C. The list of titles suggesting
the contents of the plays of both classical and Hellenistic authors shows the popularity of Trojan
and Theban myths. It proves also that not only new versions of the stories handled by Euripides
were produced at that time, but also that no less popular and suiting to the Hellenistic taste were
the tragedies of Sophocles. Moreover, one can trace the influence of Hellenistic eclecticism on and
reception of eastern religion and tradition by the dramatic productions. The evident examples of the
plays inspired by trendy myths are tragedies entitled Adonis by Philiscus and Ptolemy IV and the
so-called Gyges-Fragment.
The influence of Alexandrian scholarship and the
acribie
work of grammarians can be ob¬
served in the metre and language of the Hellenistic playwrights. The purity of the metre and richness
of the language, big number of hapax legomena and eiremena might be conclusive evidence of this
fact. Unfortunately, the fragmentary nature of the texts cannot give sufficient comparative material
to talk about general trends concerning the development of linguistic features.
Chapter III concentrates on the satyr play in the Hellenistic age. Its first part is devoted to
Agen
by Python and its important role in revolutionizing the genre. In my opinion it was the first play
of a new type, more Aristophanean in character, raising issues of contemporary politics and social
events, which could have been inspiration for the next generation dramatist such as Lycophron and
Sositheus. It does not mean, however, that the traditional subjects and figures like Syleni, satyrs or
Heracles are not present in the plays. They even represent the main stream in the satyr play produc¬
tions of the time, which can be observed in Daphnis, Lithyerses, or Crotus by Sositheus and papyrus
fragment
oí
Atlas.
Chapter IV is dealt with some special aspects of staging the Hellenistic plays. Very important
influence on the theatrical productions
ofthat
time had changes in the architecture of the theatre like
the introduction of high stage and technological innovation in mechanical equipment (e.g. pinakes,
sound system made from copper or clay vessels). Much about the appearance of the tragedy and sa¬
tyr play in the Hellenistic age might be concluded from the information about costumes and scenery.
Especially helpful in this case is the catalogue of masks in Pollux Onomasticon and certainly all
frescos and mosaics representing actors, scenes from the plays and the scenery of Hellenistic tragedy
and satyr play.
Chapter V opens with the description of dramatic festivals in different parts of the Hellenistic
world beginning with the traditional Athenian Dionysia and Lenaia, political in character festivals
of the Island League (Antigoneia, Demetrieia,
Ptolemaia)
and
Ше
Boeotian festivals: Amfiaraia,
Charitesia and Sarapieia, on which one can get information from the rich
inscripţionai
material.
I also attempt to shed some light on the process of professionalisation of theatre and the influence of
thechnitai guilds on dramatic productions.
The aim of the last chapter is to show a synthetic picture of changes in the Hellenistic tragedy
and satyr play including the mass audience, mutual influence of Greek and Eastern traditions and the
changes inside the genre which can prove that the Hellenistic drama was an important stage in the
development of the European theatre.
