Abstract
The present book is completely dedicated to one of the states forming the Polish-Lithua¬
nian Commonwealth in the aftermath of the Union of Lublin
(1569).
This is the third vol¬
ume of the series entitled: Tfie State of the
Vasas
(the previous ones:
2002
and
2004),
which
influences its structure and the contents of the individual essays. Since the author had to
take into consideration all he had already said, the problems of functioning of defence sys¬
tem and diplomacy have been omitted here. The next volumes will be devoted, among oth¬
er things, to education and art.
The chronological range of the hook, like of the previous ones, spans the period from
the election of
Sigismund III Vasa
(1587)
to the death of Ladislaus IV
Vasa
(1632).
The book opens with an Introduction in which the author, having listed the treaties be¬
tween Lithuania and Poland from the first
(1325)
to the last one
(1569),
draws the reader s
attention to the fact that the last one was directly preceded by the alteration of the common
border. Under the decisions of King
Sigismund
II Augustus, the king of Poland and grand
duke of Lithuania, taken at the request of his Polish subjects, almost one-third part of the
Grand Duchy was incorporated into Poland. In consequence, the Lithuanians entered the
union with a sense of wrong and mistrust toward their partner. The basis of this last one
was the awareness of potential advantage of Poland and its aspirations to create a central¬
ised state if not to incorporate Lithuania.
An essay
Tlie
Republic of the Two Nations in the Light of the Union Act and its Riders dis¬
cusses the provisions of the act of the Union of Lublin
(1569).
It is important to notice here
that the components of the federation
-
the Crown of the Polish Kingdom and Grand Duchy
of Lithuania -retained significant autonomy (with own territory, treasury, army, civil ad¬
ministration, and laws). They had a single king, joint
Sejm,
or Diet, and one noble nation.
Poland, however, had greater representation in the bicameral
Sejm,
both in the Senate and
in the Lower Chamber, which influenced the method of making resolutions since the ad¬
dressee had to give their assent to the provisions addressed to them.
The right of the nobles granted them in the act of the Union to acquire land properties
and in consequence offices in both states was abolished by the modified legal code of the
Grand Duchy and approved by King
Sigismund III Vasa
in
1587,
so-called Third Lithuanian
Statute. Its provision are described in the essay entitled The Law.
The name of the Commonwealth is analysed in a separate article. The official one was
formed with the name of both states of the Commonwealth, i.e. of the Polish Crown and
Grand Duchy of Lithuania. At the same time in Lithuania of the 16th century there was
registered a popular name used also in the 17 1 century, being the Lithuanian Commonwealth

or the Commonvealth of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the 17th century the name of
Poland became eqvial to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (or Republic of the Two Na¬
tions), and Polish to denote the whole nobility of the Commonwealth or event only the
Lithuanian one.
An essay Frontiers and Territory presents the administrative division of the Common¬
wealth and the division of the Churches. As to the first one, it should be noted that the
Polish-Lithuanian frontier was maintained, the freedom of crossing it was retained (but ex¬
cept for the army), and the duties were collected. The next article
Sejmiki
describes the no¬
bles assemblies that elected the representatives to the
Sejm
and candidates for local offices,
and could impose local taxes and enlist soldiers. It is worth noticing here that the dietines
could transfer the powers to the occasional assembles of the nobility, for instance on the
court session, or even those could decide of their own volition on matters reserved for
dietines.
An essay entitled Assemblies is mainly devoted to the Principal Assemblies of the Grand
Duchy of Lithuania summoned by king who also endorsed their resolutions; during inter¬
regna the assemblies were set up on the initiative of magnates. Their peculiarity was that
they were against the Act of the Union and were not referred to in the Statute.
The interrogation mark in the title Senators
-
the Senate of the Grand Duchy? results
from the fact that its author analyses the problem whether the autonomy of the Lithuanian
State implied also the existence of the Senate separated from the Polish Crown.
Two next articles are devoted to the questions of courts
-
common for the whole Com¬
monwealth and only for the Grand Duchy [The Courts) and tax system {The Taxes), The
first one pays special attention to the problems of effectiveness of the law of the Grand
Duchy, the abovementioned Statute, of its violations and the absence of reaction when it
was violated by king.
The two essays refer to the nation of the Grand Duchy. The first one analyses its struc¬

Book). Worthy of notice is the statement that as early
as in the first decade of the 17th century the term homeland was used in Lithuania to de¬
note the Grand Duchy of Lithuania within its borders at the time, and, simultaneously, to
denote the Commonwealth as a whole. The already mentioned mistrust of the Crown, and
the preservation of the autonomy in the state and national spheres against the Crown and
its nation were not accompanied by any action against the very existence of the Common¬
wealth.

presents, on the basis of the dietiny s reaction to the
riot in Vilnius against the Evangelical temple, the change in the nobility attitude, from the con¬
demnation of perpetrators to defence of the Roman Catholic Church.
Two essays arc dedicated to the actual events of the time. One describes the famous battle of
Kircholm (now Salaspilis;
1605)
against the Swedes, in which, despite well-earned publicity, the
airay of the forces is still controversial. The second one presents the events in Lithuania after the
death of King
Sigismund III Vasa
(1632).
The collection is concluded by a study The Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Republic of the
Two Nations. The author puts together the demands made by dietines and mentioned Principal
Assemblies. On this ground he concludes that for the Lithuanian nobility the partnership
in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was obvious and postulated changes in general did
not refer to the political system. One exception being the demand to establish the treasury
of fixed revenues.
