The present book is devoted to the political and military activity of Great
Hetman
of Lithu¬
ania,
Voivode
of Vilnius
Michał Kazimierz
Рас
(1624-1682).
Although the magnate belonged
to the most interesting, and at the same time most controversial figures that left their mark
on the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth of the second half of the
17
century,
a monograph on his life has not been written to this day.
In the book the author has not only reconstructed the
Рас
biography, only perfunctori¬
ly investigated so far, but also critically tackled his stereotype functioning in the Polish hi¬
storiography.
Рас
is mainly known as a mortal enemy of King John III
Sobieski,
brawler, trai¬
tor and agent at the service of the elector of Brandenburg and emperor of Austria, fighting
against the plans of state reforms and strengthening of central power. Some of these opinions
-
as we will learn from the book
-
are not fully justified by the source material, thus the au¬
thor has verified them.
The book is structured into nine chapters devoted to the successive stages of
Рас
poli¬
tical and military activity. The first chapter outlines the history of the
Рас
family till the mid
-lľ 1
century and its socio-political standing and importance, presented against the backdrop
of Lithuanian elites. The author reconstructed the early period of life of the future
hetman,
uncovering many unknown facts concerning his education (study at the Jesuit College at
Bra¬
niewo),
military service or the role of Albrycht
Stanisław Radziwiłł
in the career of
Michał
and other young Pacs of those times, including future Chancellor
Krzysztof.
The second chapter spans the period of
1659-1661.
The first date indicates the time
when in the autumn of
1659,
following the death of Samuel Komorowski
Рас
unexpectedly
became a commander of one of two divisions of the Lithuanian Army and Lithuanian Quar¬
termaster, which was a turning point for his military career. The second date was marked by
Рас
expulsion from the army which cut short his career.
The third chapter presents the activities of
Рас
which were aimed at crushing the Fraternal
Union and capturing of its leaders. A reward for this were the mantle of Lithuanian field
hetman
and
Smoleńsk
voivodship, which by the end of
1663
gave him a senatorial seat. Considerable
space is devoted to the achievements of
Рас
in military field when for the first time he single-han¬
dedly commanded the Lithuanian Army during the campaign in the summer of
1664.
The fourth chapter encompasses the period of Lubomirski s
Rokosz
(Rebellion), when
in the fight with the opposition against the king the
Рас
family faithfully stood by the side
of the throne, with persistence gaining power for their family faction. In those years
Michał
Рас
began his independent political activity
-
first, at the forum of dietines, then at the diet,
becoming a main leader of the Lithuanian regalists. His military career was crowned with
his assuming the mantle of Great
Hetman
of Lithuania.

Summary
The next chapter, encompassing the years from
1667
to
1669,
describes the process of
breaking up with the court policy, fierce rivalry with the
Radziwiłł
family for the hegemony
in Lithuania, diplomatic game pertaining to the choice of a candidate for the throne after the
abdication of King John II
Casimir
Vasa,
and the fight in the election field that ended unex¬
pectedly with the election of Michael
Wiśniowiecki.
The sixth chapter describes the period of the highest power of the Pacs in
1669-1673,
when the clan seized all the most important Lithuanian civil, military and Church offices.
Michał Kazimierz
Рас
became then one of the leaders of the court camp and one of the most
influential people in the Commonwealth.
The last three chapters, encompassing years
1674-1682,
are devoted to the most contro¬
versial period of the
hetman
biography. The Pac s conduct in those years was impacted by his
complex relationship with King John III
Sobieski.
It was the policy of tough opposition to ham¬
per by all possible ways the political and military initiatives of the king that largely shaped the
definitely negative image of
Hetman Michał Kazimierz

in the historiography.
The author emphasises in his conclusions that the general opinion about
Michał Kazi¬
mierz
Рас
is not an easy one. His military career, analysed against the broad comparative
background (John
Sobieski,
Stefan
Czarniecki, Aleksander
Hilary
Połubiński),
the author re¬
cognized as the one of the most spectacular in the second half of the 17lh century, since it is
hard to find a similar case of advancement of a brother in arms (even a hussar) go up the
ladder to the highest offices
-
of field and great
hetman.
The pace of his career, too, is wor¬
thy of notice
-
in August
1656
Рас
was made
a Rotmistrz
(rotamaster),
and as early as at the
turn of
1666/1667,
that is just over ten years later, he became Great
Hetman
(during that time
for
18
months he was outside the confederation army). Naturally, in the 17th century the chan¬
ces to advance the career depended mainly on social standing and political protection the
individual person could counted on, as well as on vacancies following deaths or promotion
to the higher offices. It is obvious in the case of
Рас
that without certain favourable factors
-
mainly the
f
avourism of his cousin
Krzysztof
(Lithuanian Chancellor from
1658)
and the royal
couple who in
1654
began to establish a new regal party in Lithuania
-
he would have never
been promoted over the middle rank of the command cadre in the Lithuanian Army.
Pac s military career proves that his military and organisational talents were superior to
those of the Lithuanian hetmans of that time
-
Paweł Jan Sapieha, Władysław Wołłowicz, Mi¬
chał Kazimierz Radziwiłł
or
Kazimierz Jan Sapieha.
Nonetheless, he cannot be regarded as one
of the most outstanding and brilliant commanders such as
Janusz Radziwiłł
or
Wincenty
Go-
siewski, not to mention
Jerzy
Lubomirski or John
Sobieski.

was a practitioner who acquired
experience and shaped the art of war on the battlefield, but he lacked a thorough theoretical
education and apprenticeship in the Western foreign armies. He was good cavalry commander
but he lacked the experience and ability to coordinate various arms; he had difficulties with
handling sieges or commanding the units of infantry regiments and artillery.
For a long time Pac s political career was overshadowed by his military career, and his
promotions to the senatorial offices were side-effects of his military appointments. Contrary
to the representatives of magnate elites (as, for instance,
Sobieski)
who due to his descent
and social standing actively participated in public life from their early years,
Рас
did no begin
his political activity until his forties. Many controversies were ignited not only by the results
but also by his style of playing politics. For his whole life he was mainly a soldier and felt
more at ease on the battlefield rather than in political salons. He also lacked good manners
and sophistication, often was guided not by reason but by emotions and personal animosi¬
ties and frequently got carried away by his hot-blooded temper. For this reason, in his public
activities he repeatedly broke the commonly accepted rules of conduct and took irrational
decisions which not only did not bring results but also caused scandals and got him in trou¬
ble, and
-
finally -brought about so many negative opinions of him among historians.
