Summary
The research questions included in the present book concern the sources
of views and new elements in the socio-political doctrine of Benedict
XVI.
Is
personalism
the fundamental characteristic of Benedict
XVľs
social and politi¬
cal concepts? The Pope does not remain passive in the face of secularisation
and globalisation tendencies as well as other phenomena and processes influ¬
encing the functioning of the state. Benedict's fundamental value is Christian
love or charity, which creates justice. Justice is the foundation of freedom,
which has a defined scope because it is not anarchy. Freedom creates condi¬
tions from which emerge brotherhood and equality. These are the central
ideas of Benedict's teachings.
Justice, freedom, peace
-
these factors create a civilisation of love as sources
of die fundamental ethical values. In Benedict XVI's concept they determine
the principles of the state and political authority working for the common
good. This thesis draws on the ideas of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas
and John Paul II.
John Paul II had a major impact on the Christianisation of contemporary
culture. He continued the social teaching of Leo
XIII,
Pius XI and John
XIII,
consolidated the Catholic worldview and oudined the role of the Church in
the expansion of the western state civilisation to Eastern Europe.
In his open doctrine Benedict
XVI
carries out a synthesis of the historical
social and political thought. He specifies the objectives and tasks of the state
and political authority, drawing on the views of St. Augustine.
The Pope asks the question about the influence of the Enlightenment on
modern man, society, state and Church. Benedict XVI's concept of person
and state is an ordered system of goals and values that form the foundation
of political authority. The ultimate objective of its actions should be human
beings, because the person is at the centre of the social order. The person is
more than the individual. The existence of the person is the goal of the exer¬
cise of political authority.
Benedict
XVI
presents his social and political views, using historical and
descriptive analysis. He discusses human rights in modern state in the context

of the state's structure, tasks, objectives, relations between society and political
authority, social and economic order, as well as the conditions of the effec¬
tiveness and relevance of the subsidiarity principle as the foundation of a just
state. He thus refers to the concept of happy life propagated by St. Augustine.
Benedict
XVI
continues the tradition of thinking about the man set out by
Socrates and Plato.
The concepts that constitute Joseph Ratzinger's fundamental social teach¬
ing are contained in his Introduction to Christianity, encyclical Letts
caritas
est,
apostolic exhortation Sacramentum caritatis as well as in his book Jesus of
Nazareth. The author examines there the issue of solving social problems, and
the ethical foundations of political authority as well as the institutional sepa-
rateness of the state and the Church, both of which have in fact a common
goal
-
people's happiness.
The Pope remains active in the face of the crucial problems of today:
democratic system of governance, tradition of the Enlightenment, liberal and
positivist
theories, relativism, theories of liberation and others. He expresses
his own position on the social activity of individuals and local communities
and their role in politics and culture. The objective is to build reconciliation
among all people
