VICTIMS AND EVELDSERS.
THE IMAGE OF FIGURES
The book is dedicated to the images of figures attending in the Passion.
The data consist of Polish passion writing from the earliest examples to
texts written before
1577
(when Poland accepted the Council s of Trent
decisions). Common subject (the Passion) and affiliation to popular culture
mark the source materials used in this book. The source texts were created
on account of evangelizing (missionary) activity of the Church: clerical
authors and every human being as an addressee. These texts are genre
diversified: one can find among others biblical and apocryphal narrations,
sermons, meditations, prayers and songs, etc. They represent different forms
of passion piety.
In the book have been examined the ways a figure is identified (referen¬
tial names, including names that can generate conjunction-based combina¬
tions), what attributes (features) are ascribed to a figure, and semantic
roles, defined here as the relations between a predicate and its arguments
(eg. role of agent, experiencer,
perceptor,
patient, etc.). It is widely assumed
that through features, semantic relations, and the way a figure is identified
one may impart specific shapes to the figures: some features and roles are
highlighted, while others placed „in the background . The process of form
imparting is called shaping or „profiling (as defined by
Bartmiński),
and
the outcome of this process is „profile (or shape) of a figure. Figure s
„profile , of course, depends on speaker intentions and aims determining
at the same time different
points of view : the theologian-teacher point
of view (evangelizing aims, handing down articles of faith), the moralist
point of view (moral aims), and the emotional point of view (tending to
move an addressee, causing desirable feelings). One of the profiles domi¬
nates and functions as a textual
semiotic role. Semiotic

scene characters are victims and evildoers.
The first chapter is devoted to victims
—
Jesus and Mary, the second
to evildoers
-
Judas, the Jews and pagans. Pontius Pilate is also an
important character attending in the Passion, but his figure had not been
profiled in the data as an evildoer , so his image has been presented in
the separate chapter entitled „others (ch. III).

In the image of Jesus Christ are mainly emphasized these senses which
allow to find him to be a victim. In the notion of victim it is possible to
point out following semantic components: the second compulsory partici¬
pant of harm relation, that is an object of somebody s activity that makes
his material, moral or physical situation worse as a result; a change of
situation is unmerited, unfair, and cannot be interpreted as a punishment;
moreover, defencelessness and helplessness can be found in the victim s
behaviour. The image of Jesus as a victim is shaped by semantic role of
patient. Acts like, for example, bitting, mocking, accusation, crucifixion
caused physical and/or mental feeling bad of patient, maked his physical
and mental condition worse. The profile of victim is also created by the
role of pain experiencing and the attribute of (bodily) weakening. The
feature of innocence and humility (here understood as submissiveness,
passivity, lack of opposition ) is also ascribed to Christ treated as a victim.
Jesus is presented as the God as well. In shaping this profile , which was
important on account of evangelizing aims, „participate definite descrip¬
tions: the God, Lord, King, Creator, attributes of being the God , being
the Son of God, and the role of subject of knowledge. On the other hand
the shape of Jesus-Saviour „is built by identifing names: saviour, salvation,
redeemer, toll, lamb, and, furthermore, attributes of innocence and the
following semantic roles: suffering experiencer, agent of will and subject of
knowledge. Both from evangelizing and moralistic points of view relevant
is the profile of Jesus-Man. Calling Jesus Son of Mary, Son of Man,
ascribing him the feature of being the human, feature of bodily ravaginig,
and showing him as a subject of emotion and suffering experiencer, the
dogma about his humanity is strenghtened in the consciousness of an
addressee. Jesus-Man is presented as a guiding light for every person
-
the
feature of humility and the role of love subject play an important role in
this dimension.
Mary is shown as a mental victim. This profile (Mater
Dolorosa)
has
been shaped mainly by the role of experiencer of unpleasant emotions,
sadness especially. Her sadness is not only presented situationally as an
experience happening in specific temporal and/or spatial conditions, but
also „attribitively
-
in isolation from specific situation and its parameters.
Being sad is the most distinctive feature in the Mary s image. The dogma
of co-redemption is expressed through shaping the image of Mary as a Mater
Dolorosa.
The role of victim is crucial not only from evangelizing point of
view, but also from moral: a speaker as a moralist shows Mary as a model
for suffering experience. This shape of her image is to evoke specific
emotions, especially compassion and sympathy, what facilitates acquiring
cognitive senses (dogma of co-redemption) and behaviour patterns (accep¬
tance of suffering).

In Judas image two profiles are highlighted: an apostle and evildoer-
traitor. Definite descriptions (apostle, journeyman, pupil, adherent, etc.) and
conjunction-based combinations (eg. the apostles and Judas) shape the apostle
profile . The role of evildoer, on the other hand, is created by identifing
names, eg. traitor, metaphoric nomination wolf, features like mercilessness
and hostility, and semantic roles: perpetrator of treason and anger experien-
cer. Being a traitor is shown not only situationally, but also is an attributive
way, it is constant component of Judas characteristics.
Except Judas, the Jews are the main perpetrators of Jesus harm. They
are frequently presented in
agentive
roles, so they are described as a very
active social community, for example agent of movement, agent of actions
(eg. hitting, coronation, crucifixion), and agent of speaking. In the image
of the Jews acts have been highlighted such circumstances allowing to
think, by common for speaker and hearer knowledge of the world, that
they evoke physical or mental distress of pateint. Consciousness and inten-
tionality are emphasized in their actions, for example through showing
them in the role of
wñl
agent. The Jews hold responsibility for their actions,
because they acted without limitations and pressure. Spiritual leaders of the
Jews are particularly blamed for passion and death of Jesus.
Agentive
roles and attributes consisting of a negative valuation com¬
ponent in moral terms create a „profile of the Jews-evildoers. Moral
appraisal is generated through such attributes like evil, cruelty and aggres¬
siveness. These features are also used as the base for community iden¬
tification
(cf.
definite descriptions sinners, scoundrels, traitors, cruel men,
furious Jewish dogs, predatory wolves, etc.). Negative moral appraisal cor¬
relates with negative valuation in cognitive (insincerity) and feeling (feature
of physical impurity and stink) terms. There also exists an indirect way of
negative assessment of the Jews: presenting their community in the role of
emotions subject. On the basis of emotional characteristics of the Jews it
is possible to reconstruct their value hierarchy: from feeling values at the
head to transcendental values at the bottom.
Pagans are the Jews accomplices as evildoers of Jesus. In source texts
they are rather treated marginally: they role is episodic nontypical and
salient. In the image of this community no typical features have been
highlighted. Their activity is also limited. Moreover, there are acquitting
circumstances: eg. no knowledge about Jesus and fulfiling orders of Pontius
Pilate or the Jews.
In analysed data acts of Pontius Pilate also had been interpretated
acquittingly. Indeed, pronouncing a death sentence on Jesus, he made
a mistake, but he did not bear the whole responsibility for it. Acquitting
circumstance is the lack of freedom: he acted under pressure of crowd of
the Jews demanding crucifixion of Jesus. Furthermore, the wrong act of

Pilate (sentencing Jesus to death) is shown as an one-time mistake,
made by good and fair judge. Highlighting in Pontius
Pilâtes
psyche the
will sphere, facilitates the acquitting interpretation: Pontius Pilate is presented
as somebody who wants to release Jesus and takes part in actions about
which he thinks that its outcomes will meet his wishes. Pilate in contrast
with the Jews does not want to hurt Jesus.
On the basis of the research one can say that in the data Judas and
the Jews play the role of evildoers.
