Cover Freedom for the Fatherland (1573).This counter shows the Maiden in a
Garden enclosed by a wattle fence; in her right hand she holds a sword
while on her head she wears the Hat of Liberty. In the seventeenth century,
these versatile images were deployed by both the provinces and the newly-
independent Dutch state to advertise their determination to uphold their
freedom. These tropes were, however, neither new nor did they originate
in the Low Countries. The Maiden in the Garden may have derived from
the medieval image of the Blessed Virgin in her hortus conclusus. Since
towns often put themselves under the patronage of the Virgin this might
have encouraged these to assume, by a process of transposition, the status
of virgins , until of course they were captured, i.e. violated by the enemy.
In the early modern period, towns like Ghent and Dordrecht as well as
provinces were symbolically represented by maidens. The Hat of Liberty
derived from the pileus or Phyrgian hat worn by Roman slaves at their
manumission and consequently it became a symbol of liberty; the medal
issued by Brutus to commemorate the overthrow of Julius Caesar therefore
bore an image of the pileus. In Andrea Alciati s emblem book, published in
the early sixteenth century, the hat stood for the Respublica liberata . When
Henri II allied with the German Protestants against Charles V in 1552, he
presented himself as the Restorer of German Liberty and accordingly had
a medal struck with the Hat of Liberty . It was, however, the rebels in
the Low Countries, who most strenuously and persistently exploited this
motif in order to advertise that they were engaged in a struggle against
tyranny .
