Empirical Verification of Erich
Fromm
s Conceptions
Summary
The work is an attempt at an empirical verification of Erich Fromm s conception concer¬
ning human nature and focusing on the to have and to be attitudes. Erich
Fromm
is often
quoted in psychological, sociological and philosophical literature as well as in fiction. Since
his thought constantly raises a lot of interest, it seems right to empirically study this great
thinker s conceptions.
To do this

subjects were studied with the use of questionnaires:

girls and
120
boys, all of them aged
18.
They were given questionnaires studying the to be and to have
attitudes, narcissism, symbiosis and necrophilia/biophilia, as well as a projection test- Family
Image, allowing narcissism, symbiosis and necrophilia to be studied on the subconscious level.
The projection test was used according to Fromm s suggestion that projection tests are the
most proper method of investigating the syndrome elements. The following research questions
(taken directly from Erich Fromm s works) were asked:

Are narcissism, symbiosis and necrophilia subject to convergence when they increase
and do they form the disintegration syndrome; if so, what is the range of this phenomenon?
The results of the study allowed giving an answer to this question. There were people
characterized by a high level of narcissism, symbiosis and necrophilia. They may be called
people with the disintegration syndrome. However, such results are not characteristic of all the
subjects. There were a lot of people whose scores were high only as concerns one of the
studied traits: symbiosis, narcissism or necrophilia. The results obtained from both kinds of
tests (questionnaires and projection tests) were harmonious; the subjects who were shown by
the questionnaires to be ones with the disintegration syndrome also in the Family Image Test
had more traits of narcissism, symbiosis and necrophilia.
The second research question was the following:

Are love of the neighbor of a foreign nature, freedom and biophilia subject to conver¬
gence when they increase, and do they form the disintegration syndrome; if so, what is the
range of this phenomenon?
The results of the study clearly showed that also in this case those subjects could be
pointed to who were characterized by a low intensity of narcissism, symbiosis and necrophilia.
Such people were included in the group of people with the growth syndrome. In the studied
sample they constituted a majority. The people who were included, on the basis of their ques¬
tionnaire scores, into the growth group, differed from the disintegration group also in the
projection test.
The next questions read:

Is there a relation between the „to be attitude on the one hand and a high intensity of
freedom, love of the neighbor and biophilia on the other?
4.
Is there a relation between the „to have attitude and a high intensity of narcissism,
necrophilia and symbiosis?
Both the research on the level of self-description and on the subconscious level showed that
people from the to be and to have groups were significantly different in all the components
of the growth syndrome and the disintegration syndrome.

Summary
Apart from the results directly concerning the subject of the work, also an additional study
was conducted of the relation between elements of the growth syndrome and the disiniegmtion
syndrome on the one hand, and the amount of time spent watching television and playing
aggressive computer games on the other, as well as between the to be and to have attitudes
on the one hand and the mass-media on the other.
Subjects from the to be and to have groups significantly differed in the amount of time
devoted to these kinds of entertainment. Subjects from the to have group devoted a lot more
time to both watching television and playing such games. It should be noted that girls from
the to be group did not play this type of games at all. Also differences were noted between
the subjects with the growth syndrome and ones with the disintegration syndrome; people
belonging to the former group devoted significantly more time to the mass-media.
On the basis of these results it may be concluded that the typology presented by Erich
Fromm
is reflected in empirical research. Presenting people as divided into those who love
living and are predisposed towards development, and those who prefer death and blocking the
dynamics of life, has been empirically confirmed. On the basis of the presented study results
planning further research works may be postulated; they should aim at verification of other
theses put forward by Erich
Fromm
that have not been empirically verified yet. On the basis
of observation it may be assumed that it would be very interesting to investigate the influence
people with the disintegration system exert on their surrounding. According to
Fromm
this
effect is very strong and destructive, especially on people who are close to such persons, and
who live together with them (Ortmeyer,
2002).
Persons who have necrophilic, narcissistic and
symbiotic tendencies have little chance to bring their children up to be creative, life-loving and
happy people (Brookfield,
2002).
According to
Fromm
this kind of attitude towards life is
contagious and is transferred from generation to generation. Also in the case of parallel rela¬
tions, like husband
-
wife, friends or colleagues, persons with the disintegration syndrome
affect their environment in a very destructive way. Investigating the strength and quality of
those influences would be very interesting from the research point of view and could give
important educational conclusions.
After an analysis of the above research results an important conclusion appears. The research
results show that intensity of the to have attitude is clearly connected with all the components
of the disintegration syndrome: narcissism, necrophilia and symbiosis. Hence promoting this
attitude and educating young people with this attitude in view is connected with very important
consequences in the sphere of personality and inter-human contacts.
In psycho-prophylactic actions it is not enough to restrict the undesired influences; the ones
should also be promoted that we consider to be positive. The to be attitude should be conside¬
red the most advantageous and it should be promoted, as it is connected with overcoming
narcissism, with the feeling of freedom in forming new relationships, and the love of life.
People formed in this way constitute much less threat to the society and have a much greater
chance to
forni
good relationships and establish a happy family and live their lives in a satis¬
factory way.
The distinguished groups are not clinical groups and that is why differences between them
are not so easily seen as it could happen in the case of groups that are selected to one purpo¬
se. Also the choice of methods, and especially of questionnaires, does not correspond comple¬
tely to Erich Fromm s theory; he suggested that projection methods would be best for investi¬
gating the growth and disintegration syndromes. However, even in the scope in which we were
able to conduct the study, its results confirm Fromm s theory, and at the same.time they reveal
new problems and ask further research problems.
