This book examines the interface between language and kinship in the
Australian Aboriginal language Kunjen which is spoken in the Cape York
region of northern Queensland. The author shows that kinship relations
play a major role in determining the kinds of linguistic interactions that
are appropriate for different groups of individuals. The social meaning
of utterances depends more than anything else on kinship and one s kin
relations with those one communicates with. The rules of interpretation used
by Kunjen speakers to mediate kinship and language are as complex and
as pervasive as the grammatical rules of the language itself, and help to
reveal aspects of linguistic structure that might not otherwise be obvious.
Conversely, kinship structures can be illuminated, if not revealed, by the
study of language use.
Bruce
A
Sommer
has spent more than forty years connected with research
in central Cape York Peninsula. Originally he intended to undertake a Bible
Translation there with his wife, Elaine, and basic literacy materials were
prepared for that eventuality, but the project was abandoned because
children were fast losing their languages. Instead, he attempted to preserve
the details of various dialects, and the rules for using language in kin-based
societies, such as the Kunjen (Oykangand) that is the centre of this study.
Unable to devote continuous effort to Peninsular research, Bruce elected
to move to the Northern Territory, and was involved for almost ten years in
its Bilingual Education program, providing linguistic advice to policy makers,
and directing field researchers. As this program was wound down, Bruce
moved back to north Queensland, and formed a private firm consulting in
Native Title matters. His linguistic perspective, augmented by anthropological
studies, provided important insights into traditional land connections by
claimants.
Bruce has retired to write up the results of Peninsular research completed
during the
1970s
and
1980s,
and now enjoys living within a stone s throw of
a quiet beach.
