The present volume of the National Library
series Studies and Materials from the History of
Cartography is a follow-up publication to the two
previous titles published in
2004
to mark the
ŐO 1
anniversary of death of a renowned Polish geogra¬
pher and cartographer
Eugeniusz
Romer
(1871-
-1954).
Volume
XVIII
{Atlases, Maps and Globes
of
Eugeniusz
Romer.
A Catalogue) provided cata¬
logue descriptions of the cartographic work of this
outstanding scholar. In a way this book is an exten¬
sion of the
Romer
catalogue. Both volumes are lin¬
ked through the Lvov-based (and since
1946
the
Wroclaw-based)
Książnica-
Atlas publishing house,
and indirectly through the person of professor
Euge¬
niusz
Romer,
initiator, co-founder and chairman of
the Supervisory Board of this notable publishing firm
since its inception on January
1,1924
until the end
of his life on January
28, 1954.
Less than a year
after
E. Romer
s
death, on January
1,1955,
Książni-
ca-Atlas was dissolved and taken over by the state.
The publishing house was established as a result
of a merger of two joint stock companies:

ca Polska Towarzystwo Nauczycieli Szkół Średnich
i Wyższych (TNSW) (Książnica Polska
Society of
Teachers of Secondary and Higher Schools)

the
roots of the society dating back to
1885 -
and the
Atlas Cartographic and Publishing Joint Stock
Company that in fact emerged out of the TNSW at
the initiative of E.
Romer in 1921.
In both companies
E.
Romer was
the chairman of the Supervisory
Board, and the merger of the two companies took
place at his initiative.
Książnica-Atlas,
one of the largest publishing
houses in the interwar Poland, offering a compre¬
hensive range of educational books and popular
science publications, was called to life to first of all
free Polish schools
-
after years of oppression
-
from
foreign teaching aids, mostly German or translated
from German. With time the publishing house suc¬
ceeded in forcing the German competition out of the
Polish educational market, and was able to offer
Polish schools excellent publications that kept
up with, or often exceeded European standards.
The credit for this undoubtedly goes to
E. Romer.
The
publishing house thrived thanks to his versatile
knowledge, courage and determination, organiza¬
tional skills, and the ability to attract remarkable
authors and top-notch professionals. The latter in¬
cluded both the managerial, editorial and technical
staff of the
Książnica
itself, as well as the staff of the
E. Romer
Cartographic Institute founded in
1921
still within the structure of the Atlas Joint Stock
Company, providing the scientific and editorial
assistance to the
Książnica-Atlas
publishing house
until it ceased to exist.
Ample literature is available on the scientific and
publishing work of
E. Romer,
and also about the
origin and the stages in the history of the
Książni¬
ca-Atlas
and Cartographic Institute s activity. The
purpose of this publication is not to produce a yet
another analysis of this rich factographic material.
The Catalogue authors goal was to put together
the entire publishing work of
Książnica-Atlas
in the
area of cartographic publications
-
maps and atla¬
ses, excluding cartographic literature. A definite
majority of maps and atlases published by
Książni¬
ca-Atlas
are works authored or co-authored by
E. Romer
himself. The Institute created also maps
by other cooperating authors and
E. Romer
acted
only as a figure-head (e.g. most of the maps of the
Wall Atlas series).
Furthermore, the
Książnica-Atlas
publishing
house offered maps made by the
E. Romer
Carto¬
graphic Institute staff members
(Teofil Szumański
and
Józef Wąsowicz)
and historians cooperating
with the Institute
(Władysław Semkowicz,
Jan Na-
tanson-Leski,
Czesław
Nanke,
Ludwik Piotrowicz)
and geologists
(Konstanty Tołwiński, Stanisław
Krajewski,
Bronisław Fleszar,
Jan Nowak, Julian
Obtułowicz),
and also maps contracted by other
institutions. The latter group includes items edited at
the Institute, as well as those prepared for printing
or only printed in the Printing Department of
Książnica-Atlas.
The
Książnica-Atlas
company
would also sometimes offer the publications of other
publishing houses as a distributor.
Volume XX of the Studies and Materials from
the History of Cartography series is dedicated to
cartographic publications by
Książnica-Atlas
that
were not included in Volume
XVIII,
thus maps and
atlases that were neither authored nor figure-headed
by
E. Romer.
While choosing the items for the Catalogue,
a decision was made to include a possibly broad
range of publications where the degree of the
Książ¬
nica-Atlas
involvement varied. This opened up
a possibility to show the subject and methodological
variety of the
Książnica-Atlas
maps, also those
produced outside the
Romer
cartographic school. It
also provided an opportunity to recall and perhaps
revive the many forgotten, and sometimes very in¬
teresting maps and atlases.
The
Książnica-Atlas
Company was established
in
1924,
but the founding of the Atlas Company,
the scientific and technical editorial office of the
publishing house, thus also the Prof.
E. Romer
Car¬
tographic Institute (later the name was changed to:

E. Romer) dates
from
1921,
and this very date is
regarded in the catalogue as the founding date.
Nevertheless, it needs to be underlined that the newly
founded Cartographic Institute was based on the
structure of the Geographic Institute of the John
Casimir
University in Lvov, called to life at the in¬
itiative of
E. Romer
already in
1911.
It is also known
that the Administration of Publications of the
TNSW Society of Teachers of Secondary and Higher
Schools (since
1916
the
Książnica Polska TNSW)
was the publisher of the first maps by
E. Romer,
starting from the
1908
Geographical Atlas. Thus
admittedly the
1921
date is justified from the formal
point of view, as it is confirmed in the documents, but
it definitely contains an element of convention.
The basic information about the maps published
or printed by
Książnica-
Atlas was drawn from the
anniversary publication of the
E. Romer

where the attempt was made to compile the compa¬
ny s entire publishing output. The list of maps and
atlases contained therein, numbering ca.
100
items
was a starting point for the preparation of the pre¬
sent Catalogue. As a result of the searches in the
National Library collection, and the queries in other
Polish libraries, the list was extended to
270
items.
The review of the material found reveals a bro¬
ad subject and methodological variety of maps,
their different purposes, a changing standard in
terms of content, editing and graphic design. The
Catalogue thus contains descriptions of extremely
simple, routine maps, hastily published to satisfy the
then needs of the domestic publishing market, next
to descriptions of maps that are excellent in terms of
workmanship, precise in every detail, and represent
a truly amazing richness of content. The most nu¬
merous group are school atlases and historical maps
(16
and
70,
respectively), geological maps
(45),
city
plans
(27),
tourist

and political-administrative
(12),
but there are also topographic, air, car, econo¬
mic, hydrological, etnographic, population and
other kinds of maps. Among them there are both
self-standing publications, constituting one-off titles,
as well as maps taken from the atlases published by
Książnica
that underwent only few editorial chan¬
ges. The final group are maps appended to textual
publications: books, periodicals, articles or papers
(without intratextual maps). These were included in
the Catalogue, because many of them began to live
their own life and were added to library collections
as separate publications.
The selection of material for the present catalo¬
gue was based on the principle adopted in Volume
XVIII
of the series. First of all, the National Library
cartographic collections were considered, where

atlases and maps were found and described,
both from the list contained in

Years of PPWK...), and from outside this list.
The remaining cartographic items described in the
Catalogue come from the Polish Academy of Sciences
Central Library of Geography and Environment
Protection, the Warsaw University Library, the
Library of the Warsaw University s Department of
Geography and Regional Studies, the Library of the
Warsaw University s Historical Institute, the Jagiel-
lonian Library, the Library of the Polish Academy
of Skills in Cracow, the Library of the Wroclaw
University s Institute of Geography and Regional
Development, the Library of the
Ossoliński
Natio¬
nal Institute and the private collections. When below
the bibliographic description a call number of one
of the above libraries is entered, and not of the Na¬
tional Library s Cartographic Collections Division,
this means that the item is missing in the National
Library holdings and a copy from another collec¬
tion was used for the description purposes.
It was the authors intention to directly reach as
large a number of items from the created list as
possible to create a description based on the origi¬
nal item. However, this was not always possible. It
is worth noting that finding many maps of the inter-
war period today encounters serious difficulties or
may even turn out to be impossible. Considering the
Książnica-Atlas
production this is chiefly the case
with wall and reference historical maps of which few
have been preserved due to natural wear. Also quite
often, perhaps apart from the Jagiellonian Library
collections where a bunch of legal deposit copy
maps have been preserved, maps held by other libra¬
ries are in a bad condition and require very costly
conservation treatment. Many of them have been
irretrievably lost
,
like maps from the National Li¬
brary legal deposit collection dated
1928-1939.
If
below an abbreviated map or atlas description prin¬
ted in an unbolded font the call number is missing this
means that information about this specific item was
derived only from literature.
The Catalogue is divided into two basic parts:
atlases and maps, arranged in a chronological order.
Under each year at first the descriptions of cartogra¬
phic documents are grouped, possessing unequivo¬
cal dates of publication, followed by descriptions of
items where the date of publication is uncertain, pre¬
sumable or comes from a different source. For each
year the subject arrangement is used, e.g. geogra¬
phical maps (general, topographical), subject maps
(geological and mining, other natural resources
maps, population maps, political-administrative,
road, rail, air, other traffic, economic, tourist maps),
city plans, historical maps. The next arrangement

level is based on the general to detailed principle
depending on the range of the main map.
To ensure the consistency of volumes
XVIII
and XX in terms of form and content an identical
form of the catalogue description was used, made
according to the same principles. The elements of
the note are entered, as faithfully as possible, in the
order and according to the wording in which they
appear in the original document (title, author and/or
statement of responsibility, edition
,
scale, projection,
statement of publication, physical description,
series, remarks). All elements of the description
quoted from the item
,
using the then rules of spel¬
ling, were marked with a bolded font. The conformity
of the description with the original is not observed
only in the case of the method of map scale presen¬
tation: the punctuation marks from the denominator
were omitted. Should the date of publication not be
inferred from the item, but from a different source,
it is put in square brackets and the source is quoted
in the remarks area. The Catalogue, however, con¬
tains maps for which it is hard to determine an even
approximate date of publication. In such a case the
date may be approximated on the basis of the bor¬
der, shapes that merely suggest the time interval (for
instance: before
1939)
or information resulting from
the content presented on the map, e. g. The Condi¬
tion of the Precipitation and Water-Gauge Network
of
1928-1928
[not before
1929].
Sometimes the only
source of an approximate date of publication is the
accession record from the library holding the item.
Descriptions of maps in which the actual date of pu¬
blication (given in brackets) diverges from the one
given in the cartographic document are arranged in
a chronological order according to the date quoted
from the document (map). This enables easy identi¬
fication of the item and at the same time verification
of the year of its publication. The map dimensions
(respectively: height, width) are understood as the
content of the map itself plus the frame. If the map
is not framed, the sheet dimensions are given.
For the descriptions of atlases the rule was
adopted to enumerate the contents (plate titles and
scales of key maps) of the atlas first edition. For
subsequent versions only the differences versus the
previous edition are listed.
The catalogue provides us with indexes of
titles, names, geographical names included in the
entries, a bibliography, a list of illustrations, and a list
of abbreviations.The name index covers names listed
in the bibliographic description, cited literature and
remarks. The names used in the map titles are omitted,
e.g. Alexander the Great or
Casimir

institution index contains references to the current
names of enterprises or scientific establishments
