BALKANAS
(FILM) GENRE: image, text, nation deals with
the patterns of cinematic construction and representation of Bal¬
kan identity as well as simultaneously mapping out the changes
and emergence of different (Balkan) identity concepts. The premi¬
se of the multifaceted analysis is the existence of a Balkan iden¬
tity
-
that has been denied by many theoreticians
-
now termed
as Balkaness. The initial idea for the title, Balkan Genre, was re¬
jected in favor of the more precise Balkan as (Film) Genre with
the addition of the main analytical guidelines: image, text, nation.
The analysis of the representational images belongs to the domain
of comparative imagology. The text confirms textual analysis as
the main approach to the deconstruction, reading and interpreting
of the chosen films. The term nation points toward the strong and
decisive link of this study with the problematisation of nation and
nationalism in the former Yugoslavia and the ways they modeled
the national/Serbian or Balkan cinema in general. However, the
debate about the terms of nation, identity and above all national
identity in the Balkans is significantly reduced to essential theses
that serve to lay out firm theoretical and analytical premises. All
these analyses strive to achieve Willemen/Bakhtin dialogical rea¬
ding
-
creative and true understanding of the culture of the (Laca-
nian) Other. The book is dedicated primarily to the notion of the
Balkan (film) genre and the ways images and texts construct and
represent Balkan identity perhaps defined by its very elusiveness,
multiculturalism, multinational and interethnic nature. The book,
accordingly, tries to answer two questions

important one Whether the analysis of the body of films proves
and supports the existence of the Balkan genre and justifies the
link identity-genre-nation-region? , and second What is the na¬
ture of the Balkan identity we are looking for? The list of the
case studies includes Balkan films {Journey into Sun, Valkanisate-
ur, California Dreamin ) with the predominance of ex Yugoslav
production (Underground; Pretty Village, Pretty Flame; Remake;
Borderpos
t; Dust; South by South East..) but also a number of
films made around the world (Savior, Harrison s Flower, Behind
Enemy Lines...) allowing for an outline of the contrasting gaze of
insiders and outsiders as well as different perceptions and identity
representation.
The book relies upon and continues my previous research pr¬
ojects about Balkanism in cinema realized under the auspices of
the British Academy of Arts and Science
( 2001,2003-2006)
and
CAS in Bulgaria
(2002/03)
as well as the works and papers repr¬
esented and published in Serbia, former Yugoslavia, Europe and
USA. The research prehistory strongly argues the topic s dynamic
positioning within the system of theoretical frameworks ranging
from Film Studies, Balkan Cultural Studies,
Postcolonial
Stud¬
ies to the imagology, narratology, theories of nation or identity
representation. Its theoretical platform involves classical works
of E. Said, H. Bhabha, B. Anderson, G. Deleuze, J.
Lacan;
fou¬
nding works of Balkan (Cultural) Studies (of M. Todorova, D. Io-
rdanova, T. Stoianovich, V. Goldsworthy, D. Norris, O.
Savie, D.
Bjelic,
T. Longinovic
and many others), as well as film theories
of great academics like Dudley Andrew,
Ginette Vincendeau,
Ri¬
chard Dyer, Christine
Gledhill,
Denis Derman, John Hill, David
Martin-Jones who provided their valuable help as well as through
the participation in many debates and long talks.
The book is loosely divided in four parts with nine chapters.
An introductory part (ch.
1.
Balkan Themes; ch.
2.
Genre, Nation,
Identity, Representation) provides the operative definitions of
the basic terms such as nation, identity, national cinema and five
basic hypothesis /definitions of the Balkan genre from the filli-

and affliative perspective. The second part deals with the
film texts that offer a rethinking of the Balkan identity through
the tropes of journey and road shaped in the travelogue formula
(ch.3. Balkan Borders; ch.
4.
Remembrance of the Things Past).
The third part is dedicated to the neowar films of national but al¬
so international production (ch.
5.
War on No Man^s Land; ch.6.
Diagnosis: South); the view of Balkan identity sketched from the
North Atlantic cultural perspective (ch.
7.
Celluloid Balkan) and
analysis of the
cityscape
(ch.
8.
Balkan City). Finally the fourth
part (ch.
9.
The Borders of the Balkan, Genre and Identity) verifi¬
es or rejects the initial hypotheses and offers a possible definition
and description of the Balkan (film) genre. Balkan (film) genre is
claimed to be a creolized form in constant deleuzian de/reterritori-
alisation. It is made through the hybridization and cultural appro¬
priation of world formulas; it is par excellence a post (modern,
communist, Yugoslav), multicultural), trans(national) form that
parallels and is isomorphous with the changes of the Balkaness.
The structural analogies and isomorphisms are confirmed through
the mentioned genre and national de/reterritorialisan made visi¬
ble in narrative time restructuring. The (Balkan) narrative time
constantly vacillates between linear and non-linear/labyrinthine
/circular, real and mythical time confirming by its changes, the
metaphorical and transitional nature of the film formula and the
meanings of Balkaness.
Balkan as film genre defined by textual structure and nature;
image of the nation, and mode of representation; built through the
variations of the othering and recognition of the Other is the
free zone of creolised/creolising genres that shape and articulate
cultural specificity in unique ways. It is the territory of the cre¬
ation of language, of cultural narratives, identity images and nat¬
ions through metaphors and their various meanings. The atlas of
the cinematic-discursive-textual (imagined and represented) Bal¬
kans involves the maps of (the territories of) genres, Balkaness,
chronotopes, landscapes and
cityscapes.
It charts the theorization
of the cultural specificity and eventually the writing of the history
of the Balkan genre.
