The period between 1920 and 1945 in the history of Hungarian Jewry was character!-

zed by growing antisemitism, anti-Jewish legislation, severe persecution, and genocide.
When Germany occupied its Hungarian ally in March 1944. the Hast chapter of the
Holocaust was systematically arid rapidly staged. During a period of two months, the
German and Hungarian authorities deported more than half of the country’s 800,000
jews to Auschwirz-Birkenau. However, a majority of the jews living in Budapest survi-
ved, due to the fact that the deportations were halted before they reached the capital

Cross rule, which lasted until the end of the war in February 1945.
After the war, survivors recounted their experiences in interviews, reports, and me-
moins. They spoke not only about the terror and the persecution they faced during
1944-1945» but also about their evervdav lives during the 1920s and 1930s. In this

studv, 173 testimonies are investigated in order to ascertain how lews experienced di-

scrimination and the Holocaust in Hungary on a micro level Multiple factors such as
gender, age, social class, and geographical place, are examined and emphasized. How
did Jewish women and men of various ages, iront various soda! classes and regions ex-
perience these times of upheaval? How did the survivors perceive these events, and how
did they respond to them? These questions, among others, are addressed in this disser-
tation. in order to shed light on human behaviour and common experiences during a
time of disorder and state-authorized mass violence.
