Human history is at least
3
million years old. It developed in math¬
ematical progression during the Stone Age, but after the Bronze Age and
especially during the Iron Age there was already evidence geometrical
progression. There was rapid acceleration of this type of development
during XIX-XX centuries.
Since ancient Europe experienced the strong influence of Western
Asia, the first waves of Homo sapiens and bearers of productive economy
came through this area and the Balkans and reached Upper
Tisza
Re¬
gion at the end of IV
ВС.
This region is quite unique in the limits of
Carpathian-Danube
areal.
On one hand, it served as a kind of natural
fortress, encircled by the mountains and
Tisza
river network, On the
other hand, for

million years it used to be a home for Homo sapiens.
Later, in IV
ВС
and mainly in III
ВС,
it became one of the main areas
(Upper Tisza-Transylvanian) of European non-ferrous metallurgy.
The process of economic and social development of the tribes who
owned their own ore was much faster, than of those who bought the
products made of nonferrous metal. This appeared a prerequisite of tribal
world consolidation and formation of the specific nations, in particu¬
lar, the
Gava
culture.
Study of Upper
Tisza
Region monuments of the early Iron Age led
to the conclusion that the region was the northern outskirt of Thracian
massif of Carpathian Hollow. Ethnic and cultural influences, which as¬
sisted the formation (on the joint
Gava
basis) of two paternal cultural
groups: Kushtanovytsya and Sanislau-Nir (VI-IV
ВС),
which were differ¬
ent in terms of significance and influence. The first group, in the period
of its formation experienced strong influence from the north (from
Luzica culture); the other one was influenced from
Tisza
area. In the
process of their development, cultural influence of Thracian and Scythian
groups is evident. The activity of both groups in the different areas of
the region was unclear.
In general during VI-IV
ВС
Upper
Tisza
Region represented uni¬
fied cultural and economic territory, located in two ecological niches
(piedmont and valley), Differences in types of burial places regardless

of the unified way of burying are probably connected to tribal peculiari¬
ties.
In social respects the Upper
Tisza
society of the early Iron Age was
patrimonial, with a clan community as a basis of the economy. Agricul¬
ture and cattle-breeding were the main economic activities. Very likely,
cattle-breeding dominated in piedmont areas. Metallurgy remained at
the level of home production and could not stimulate local economies.
Arrival of the bearers of
Latten
civilization (Celts) at the end of IV-
III
ВС
destroyed the quite archaic way of living of the local population.
Metallurgy and metal working, pottery, introduction of commodity-
money relations, and correspondently, clearer social stratification be¬
came widely spread. Burial places and treasures prove these.
Changes of the ethnic and political situation on Carpathian-Dan¬
ube
areal
of I BC is connected to appearance of the Dacians (younger
branch of Get) on the political stage. In the
60s
ВС
in the area of Middle
Danube, Dacians disbanded the Boy and Tavrisk forces of king Kritasir.
Afterwards, Celts left the historical stage of Carpathian-Danube
areal;
Dacian-Get led by king Burebista started to dominate.
The population of Upper
Tişza
Region was influenced by this event.
Oppidum
Galish-Lovaczka declined and a system of fortified settlements
appeared. Zemplin and Mala Kopanya were the real political and eco¬
nomic centers of
Dacian
culture. Along with other fortified settlements
(Bila
Cerkva, Solotvyno, Oncheshty) these centres were included in a
unified economic structure of
Dacia.
The development of the
Dacian
state was interrupted in
101-106
AD during the period of
Dacia-Rome
wars.
Decebaľs
kingdom literally
vanished and huge numbers of people, mainly warriors, died. The last
Roman province with strong border fortifications was established on
this territory.
The Upper
Tisza
Region, which didn't include the area (about
40
km north) of Limes Porolissensis, did not have contact with the border
areas at the beginning. But, since II AD (according to import dynamics)
trade relations became permanent, especially after
Marcoman
wars
(180AD).
The culture of Carpathian Burial Mounts, which can be associated
with the tribes of Costobok, developed on the territory of the region
during II AD. Pavsaniy (II AD) and
Dio
Cassiy (about
160-235)
pointed
out the presence of Costoboks in upper
Tisza
area, demonstrating the
approaching of Vandal-Asting in northern
Dacia
border areas at the edge
Abstraction

of
170-171
AD.
Ancient authors mentioned that after the defeat of the
free
Dacian
tribe Costobok, Asting attacked the northern part of the
province.
Location of
Kostobok
tribes fits the frame of Carpathian Burial
Mounts culture: Upper
Tisza
on the western side of Carpathians and
Upper Prut and Dniester on the East. Any other synchronous archeo-
logical cultures with similar localization are unknown at the moment.
The culture of Carpathian Burial Mounts reached its peak in III-IV
AD. This was connected to the territorial nearness of Roman Empire,
the availability of raw materials, and the geographical location.
Economic and social improvements of the local northern Thracians
were followed by increased population (about
350
settlements) in the
later Roman period, creation of a pottery workshop network, and the
formation of the largest, in barbarian Europe, pottery area named
Mic.
It is possible to assume that the bearers of Pshevor culture (Van-
dal-Asting), who infiltrated the region from Northern Poland in II AD,
played a consolidating role. Organized around well-armed forces with a
clear social structure, they quickly occupied and dominated Upper
Tisza
Region.
The first groups of the bearers of Pshevor culture appeared in Up¬
per
Tisza
Region at the end of state B2. But, the influx of the larger
majority of them occurred at stage B2/C1, which corresponds to the
data of ancient authors. Astings experienced changes to their culture
and they quite quickly were assimilated, after getting used to the local
environment.
The lengthy history of northern Thracians in Upper
Tisza
Region
concluded at the end of IV AD. Few settlements of the Pshevor type
survived into
VAD.
The death of the culture of Carpathian Burial Mounts
is connected to the events of

AD, after the battle at
Adrianopol
and
the victory of
Gots
over the Roman Empire. The hordes of Hun occu¬
pied the Carpathian basin. Their move to the North can be traced by
dozens of treasures, discovered along both sides of
Tisza.
In its upper
regions the following treasures are known:
Brestov, Krivoshtyany
(with
the last emission of emperor
Valent
(368-378)),
and material remains
Ш
^Chronologically, depopulation of the settlements coincided with the
epoch of The Great Movement of Nations. More particular, there was a
concentrated in
the areas of rivers
Keres
and
Maros
.
presence in the region is proven by a number of ground bunal places.

We can only assume what happened to the local population dur¬
ing the turbulent period of the end of
W
-
beginning of V AD. It has not
been ruled that part of them were pushed out to the mountains, which
has not been studied in an archeological context. The other part of the
local population vanished; some tribes were conquered by the waves of
migrants. Presumably, these events are connected to the appearance (not
earlier than in second half of IV AD) of the group of representatives of
Carpathian Burial Mount culture in between the two rivers Ozana and
Rishka in Moldova.
In mid V AD there was an outflow of German tribes from Upper
Tisza
Region. This can be explained by the need to concentrate forces
before a decisive battle with Huns
(454).
After the victory Gepids be¬
came the leaders of the tribal union and dominated Carpathian
areal
till the invasion of Avars.
Population of devastated lands of Upper
Tisza
Region started from
early VI AD and was connected to the new nation of Slave represented
by the tribe of Dulibs from Volyn.
The next wave of Slavic tribes came to the region under the pres¬
sure of Avars, who created the Avar state in the middle region of the
Danube. Avars pushed out the
Langobards
to Northern Italy and con¬
trolled a huge territory in between the Black Sea and Alpine Mountains,
Elba River and the Adriatic Sea. The western and south-western areas of
the Upper
Tisza
Region became a part of Avar state at the end of
VII AD.
This is evident because of the ground burials (about
700)
on this terri¬
tory. The collapse of the Avar state
(791-796)
coincides with formation
of one of the first Slavic states
-
Great Moravia.
All these movements, first of all, of the Slaves, directly or indirectly,
influenced the ethnic and cultural situation in Upper
Tisza
Region of V-
IX AD. At the end of IX AD Hungarian tribes entered the region through
Carpathian Mountain passes. During the next century Hungarians set¬
tled in the region. The further history of this region is connected to
formation and development of an early feudal Hungarian state. |
